Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1125 is designed for 2006-10 Jeep Commander. However, you must confirm the weight of your specific vehicle before towing. The baseplate is rated for Class III, 5,000 lbs. Some Commander models, depending on options, may exceed this rating. If your vehicle weighs over 5,000 lbs, you must use either the Aventa II or Alexus tow bar instead of tow bar adapters. Contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 or www.blueox.com to verify your vehicle's weight and towing compatibility.
No. Tow bar adapters are not to be used with vehicles weighing over 5,000 lbs. If your 2006-10 Jeep Commander exceeds the 5,000 lb Class III rating, you must use either the Aventa II tow bar (rated 10,000 lbs) or the Alexus tow bar instead. Confirm your vehicle's weight before purchasing or installing the baseplate.
The BX1125 kit includes: one baseplate weldment (61-6199), eight 3/8-16 nut plates with 14" wire (61-5208), two backing plates (102-5461), eight 3/8-16 x 1½" hex bolts Grade 5 (201-0440), eight 3/8" lock washers (203-0010), two #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws (201-0979), two #10-32 x ½" round head screws (201-0192), two #10-32 lock washers (203-0054), two #10-32 hex nuts (202-0047), two 4-way connector adapters (101-5822), two attachment assemblies (62-3468), two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (226-0046), four 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359), six plastic rivets (229-0536), and two black cap plugs (290-0437). The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is recommended separately.
Required tools are: 10MM socket, 15MM socket, 9/16" socket, 13/32" drill bit, vise grip, diagonal cutter, Loctite RED, and plastic rivet gun. A power drill is needed for drilling the frame rail holes. When using a power drill, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length.
Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge to do fit work. While the baseplate was designed for relatively straightforward installation, dimensional variations between vehicles can be considerable, and minor adjustments such as filing holes, bending electrical rods or bending end plates may be necessary. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by calling (402) 385-3051.
No. The tow hooks will be removed during installation and will NOT be reinstalled. Make sure the removed tow hooks are returned to the customer.
Yes. Drilling is required. Using a 13/32" drill bit, you must drill two holes into the frame rail on each side of the vehicle, between the radiator and the metal bumper. When using a power drill, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. The baseplate is aligned with the two existing holes where the tow hooks were connected, then clamped in place before drilling the additional holes.
The grille, front fascia, tow hooks, and frame rail cups must be removed for baseplate installation. Specifically: remove six pushpins from the top of the fascia, pull up the black plastic on top of the fascia to release the grille, remove four more pushpins from the front fascia, remove three rivets from inside the wheel well just forward of the front tire, remove two metric bolts from the bottom of the fascia, release three clips from inside the wheel well on the fender guard, disconnect fog lights if applicable, remove three metric nuts securing the tow hooks, and remove metric nuts securing the frame rail cups. All removed parts except the tow hooks are reinstalled after baseplate installation.
The manual provides a general torque chart for Grade 5 and Grade 8 bolts but does not state the specific torque value for 3/8-16 bolts in the installation instructions. The instructions direct you to the torque chart on the front page of the installation instructions or page 3 of the Baseplate Towing General Instructions. According to the torque chart provided, a 3/8" Grade 5 bolt requires 33 foot-pounds and a 3/8" Grade 8 bolt requires 47 foot-pounds. The BX1125 uses Grade 5 bolts (3/8-16 x 1½"), so 33 foot-pounds applies. Always use Loctite RED on all bolts before tightening.
The sequence is: (1) Align the baseplate with the two existing holes where tow hooks were connected and clamp in place with vise grips. (2) Insert 3/8-16 x 1½" hex bolts with 3/8" lock washers into the existing holes on both sides. (3) Install backing plates onto the hex bolts. (4) Insert 3/8-16 nut plates through the frame cup opening and align with the bolts. (5) Using the baseplate as a template, drill two holes into the frame rail on each side with a 13/32" drill bit. (6) Install 3/8-16 x 1½" hex bolts with 3/8" lock washers into the drilled holes. (7) Insert 3/8-16 nut plates into the frame rail opening and align with the bolts. (8) Apply Loctite RED to all bolts before tightening to specification.
Yes. You must use Loctite RED on all bolts before tightening. This is required for both the initial installation and any future maintenance. The manual emphasizes this requirement twice in the installation steps.
No. The manual specifies that you must use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit. Do not assume existing bolts are adequate for baseplate mounting. The kit includes new 3/8-16 x 1½" hex bolts Grade 5 with lock washers. The factory tow hook bolts are removed and not reused.
Remove the three rivets from inside the wheel well just forward of the front tire using diagonal cutters and discard them. New rivets are provided in the kit (six plastic rivets, part 229-0536) for reinstallation of the fascia after baseplate installation.
The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is recommended for the 2006-10 Jeep Commander with the BX1125 baseplate. The kit is not included but is sold separately. All electrical connections must be plugged in properly and functioning before installing the fascia. Ensure the customer receives instruction sheets for all products.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX1125 kit includes two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (part 226-0046) and four 3/8" quicklinks (part 229-0359). The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. They are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications using Loctite Red. Verify that all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. Check that the tow bar and safety cables are installed correctly per their instructions. Ensure the attachment tabs are installed if in use.
Yes. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use if applicable. The baseplate can be installed with or without removable tabs.
The attachment tab height is 17¾" and the attachment tab width is 24".
Yes. It is crucial to register your product online at www.blueox.com so that you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
If the Jeep Commander is equipped with fog lights, disconnect them before pulling the fascia forward during installation. Reconnect them after the fascia is reinstalled.
Yes, but you must confirm your vehicle's weight first. The baseplate is rated for Class III, 5,000 lbs. If your Commander exceeds 5,000 lbs, you must use the Aventa II or Alexus tow bar instead. Call Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 to verify.
Yes. You must drill two holes on each side of the frame rail using a 13/32" drill bit. The grille, fascia, tow hooks and frame rail cups must also be removed.
10MM socket, 15MM socket, 9/16" socket, 13/32" drill bit, vise grip, diagonal cutter, Loctite RED, and plastic rivet gun. A power drill is required for drilling frame rail holes.
The 3/8-16 Grade 5 bolts require 33 foot-pounds. Always apply Loctite RED before tightening. Refer to the torque chart in the General Instructions for other bolt sizes.
No. The tow hooks are removed and will not be reinstalled. Return them to the customer.
The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is recommended and sold separately. All electrical connections must be plugged in and functioning before reinstalling the fascia.
Yes. Two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables and four 3/8" quicklinks are included. They are strongly recommended and must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. Do not mount them against wires, hoses or brake lines.
