Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX1143 is designed specifically for 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokee with ACC & Technology Package and 2-Speed Transfer Case. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding with installation.
The BX1143 attachment tab height is 20 inches and the attachment tab width is 37.25 inches.
Required tools include: flat screwdriver, plastic rivet gun, torque wrench, 1/4" drill bit, 8MM socket, 10MM socket, 15MM socket, 16MM socket, 30MM socket, 3/4" socket, 3/4" wrench, and T27 Torx. You will also need Loctite Red for all bolt threads.
Yes. The fascia cover and fascia must be removed and reinstalled for baseplate installation. The fascia cover is held by 13 push pins (6 on each side and 1 in the center), and the fascia itself is secured with bolts and rivets that must be removed before installation.
Yes. The factory tow hooks are removed during installation and will not be reinstalled. They are secured with two 16MM bolts and one 30MM nut on each side, which must be removed and the hooks set aside.
Yes. The frame extensions are removed during installation and will not be reinstalled. Each side is secured with three 15MM bolts and one 10MM nut (or clip on some models) that must be removed.
Yes, some drilling is required. You must drill out one 1/8" rivet from the underside corner of the fascia on each side. Additionally, you must drill two 1/4" holes in the bumper to mount the electrical/breakaway bracket.
When installing the baseplate, tighten the bumper bolt first, then tighten the remaining three bolts. This applies to both sides of the vehicle. All bolts must be tightened with Loctite Red to the appropriate torque specifications.
10MM Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 31 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite Red applied to the threads before tightening.
1/2" Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 78 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite Red applied to the threads before tightening.
1/4" Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 10 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite Red applied to the threads before tightening.
The electrical/breakaway bracket is attached using two 1/4" bolts with 1/4"-20 hex nylon nuts and 1/4" lock washers. The bracket is positioned by marking two holes in the bumper with a 1/4" drill bit before installation.
Each attachment tab assembly (two total) is installed using one 1/2" x 5" hex head bolt, Grade 5, with a 1/2" lock washer and a 1/4" thick washer plate with 1/2" hole. These are installed from the backside of the baseplate.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Yes. The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
The permanent baseplate safety cables are attached to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
After baseplate installation, reinstall the fascia and fascia cover and reconnect all electrical connections. Install new plastic rivets into the underside of the fascia where the factory rivets were removed. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before completing the fascia reinstallation.
The BX8848 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle, but the manual does not explicitly state whether it is required. Contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 to confirm if it is necessary for your specific installation.
If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding with installation. This ensures your vehicle is compatible with the BX1143 baseplate.
Yes. You must use a sufficient amount of Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening. Tighten all bolts according to the torque chart provided unless otherwise specified in the instructions.
No. You must use only genuine factory replacement parts on the baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (usually Grade 5). Failing to use genuine parts will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten them to the recommended torque specifications.
Yes. You should register your product online at www.blueox.com. Registration is crucial so you can be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
Yes. The attachment tabs can be removed when not in use.

Tighten all loose bolts to the appropriate torque specifications using the torque chart provided in the manual. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening. Loose bolts can result in baseplate failure during towing.
Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts. If the baseplate has cracked welds, it must be replaced. Inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds before each towing trip.
Reposition the safety cables so they do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. The cables must be routed to avoid contact with oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires, and brake lines. Improper routing can cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts after installation.
