Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes. The fascia must be removed and reinstalled for the baseplate installation. The removal process varies slightly by vehicle model and involves removing push pins and screws from the top cover, top edge, lower fascia, and wheel well areas, then unhooking electrical connections.
Yes. Drilling is required. You must drill out the back hole through the frame using a 17/32" drill bit and the baseplate as a guide on both sides of the vehicle. Additionally, for Cadillac Escalade models, you must drill out the license plate bracket rivets with a 3/16" drill bit.
Yes. Trimming is required. You must trim the fascia with a utility knife to provide clearance for the baseplate. Some models may also require additional trimming of the upper tow hook pocket to allow for baseplate clearance.
Possibly. If the attachment tab hits the frame and will not lock, you must use a hammer to bend the frame up until the tab clears the frame. This is a conditional modification required only if interference occurs.
For Grade 5 bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 154 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 257 ft-lbs. For Grade 8 bolts: 1/4" = 14 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 29 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 47 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 78 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 119 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 230 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 380 ft-lbs.
For Grade 8.8 metric bolts: 6MM = 6 ft-lbs, 8MM = 16 ft-lbs, 10MM = 31 ft-lbs, 12MM = 54 ft-lbs, 14MM = 89 ft-lbs, 16MM = 161 ft-lbs, 18MM = 222 ft-lbs. For Grade 10.9 metric bolts: 6MM = 8 ft-lbs, 8MM = 22 ft-lbs, 10MM = 40 ft-lbs, 12MM = 70 ft-lbs, 14MM = 117 ft-lbs, 16MM = 230 ft-lbs, 18MM = 318 ft-lbs.
The kit includes: two BX1676 baseplates, two 12" convenience links (PS and DS), four 1/2"-13 x 5" Grade 5 hex head bolts, four 1/2" lock washers, four 1/2"-13 hex nylon lock nuts, one 90-degree electrical bracket, six 1/4"-20 x 3/4" Grade 5 hex head bolts, four 1/4" lock washers, four 1/4" flat washers, four 1/4"-20 hex flange whiz lock nuts, two #10-32 1/2" round slotted head screws, two #10 lock washers, two #10-32 hex nuts, two 4-way connector adapters, two attachment tab assemblies with holes, one BX1676 breakaway bracket, two 1/4"-20 hex nylon nuts, eight 1/2" flat washers, two class IV safety cables, two 1/2" quicklinks, two black cap plug receivers, and four 6.3MM plastic rivets.
The factory tow hooks are removed and not reinstalled. Using an 18MM socket, you remove the two bolts from the tow hooks on each side of the vehicle, and these bolts and hooks will not be reinstalled.
The factory bumper bolts are reinstalled with additional washers to provide clearance for the baseplate. Using an 18MM or 21MM socket (depending on the vehicle), you remove the bolt from the top of the bumper and reinstall it with three or four washers as shown in the instructions. This is done on both sides of the vehicle.
The convenience links are attached to the front bolt of the baseplate. After snugging the front 1/2"-13 x 5" bolt to keep the baseplate from moving, you remove the nut from the front bolt and attach the convenience link (12" PS on the passenger side and 12" DS on the driver side). You then reinstall the front nut with a 1/2" lock washer.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The BX1676 kit includes two class IV safety cables and two 1/2" quicklinks for this purpose. The cables must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Paint cut edges of frame to prevent rusting. Permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle.

The warranty does not cover incorrect or improper installation, improper use, modification, neglect, failure to maintain, misuse, accident, normal wear and tear, paint, or rust.

Exceeding your vehicle's GVWR will void the manufacturer's warranty. The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR, so you must reference your vehicle owner's manual for towing specifications.
The baseplate must be replaced and cannot be reused. Do not use a damaged baseplate or one involved in an accident, as unseen damage could cause serious injury.
