Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, drilling is required. You must drill out the existing hole in the bottom of the frame on both sides using a 17/32" drill bit. You must also drill a new hole through the frame 1-7/16" back from the existing hole and 1-3/16" up from the bottom of the frame on the outside DS frame and the inner PS frame, also using a 17/32" drill bit.
Yes, trimming is required. The fascia must be trimmed around the attachment tab tubes on both sides. For Escalade models only, the inner layer of plastic from the inside of the fascia must be trimmed prior to marking the attachment tab tube area. Optionally, a 2-1/2" hole saw can be used to drill through the fascia instead of manual trimming.
A 17/32" drill bit is required. This size is used to drill out the existing hole in the bottom of the frame and to drill the new hole 1-7/16" back from the existing hole and 1-3/16" up from the bottom of the frame on both sides.
For 1/2"-13 bolts, the torque specification depends on the bolt grade. Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 78 foot-pounds, and Grade 8 bolts should be torqued to 119 foot-pounds. The BX1716 hardware kit includes Grade 5 bolts. Always use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.
For 1/4"-20 bolts, the torque specification depends on the bolt grade. Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 10 foot-pounds, and Grade 8 bolts should be torqued to 14 foot-pounds. The BX1716 hardware kit includes Grade 5 bolts. Always use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.

On GMC Yukon and Yukon XL models, six (6) push pins must be removed from the fascia cover and the front edge must be unsnapped.
On Cadillac Escalade models, fourteen (14) push pins must be removed from the fascia cover and set aside. There are seven (7) on each side.
On Chevy Suburban and Tahoe models, six (6) screws must be removed from the top edge of the fascia using a 10MM socket. There are three (3) on each side. On the passenger side, the wiring harness (gray) must be disconnected.
On GMC Yukon and Yukon XL models, six (6) screws must be removed from the top edge of the fascia using a 10MM socket. There are three (3) on each side. On the passenger side, the wiring harness (gray) must be disconnected.
On Cadillac Escalade models, eight (8) screws must be removed from the top edge of the fascia using a 10MM socket. There are four (4) on each side. On the passenger side only, the plug (black) must be disconnected and the two (2) clips holding the wiring loom (gray) must be removed.
On Cadillac Escalade models, after removing the push pins and screws, use a small flat screwdriver to release the two (2) tabs down behind the grille prior to removing the fascia. Then gently pry the clips at the corners of the fascia loose from the fender, pop loose the two (2) clips behind the grille towards the base, and remove the fascia from the vehicle.
On Cadillac Escalade models, eight (8) screws must be removed from the underside of the fascia using a 10MM socket. There are three (3) on each side and two (2) in the middle. Additionally, two (2) push pins located in front of the tires (gray) must be removed.
Slide the baseplate into the frame pocket and install 1/2"-13 × 1-1/4" bolts with 1/2" lock washers into the outside frame holes and the bottom hole. On the bottom hole, use a 1/2" whiz nut on the inside of the frame, using the factory hole for access. Fully tighten all fasteners until the frame squeezes against the baseplate on both sides of the vehicle. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.
Install the convenience link to the frame with 1/2"-13 × 1-3/4" bolts with 1/2" lock washers on both sides of the vehicle. Tighten down until the frame squeezes against the baseplate. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables should be secured to the frame of the vehicle. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle. The permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. Their function is to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame of the towed vehicle and the baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame.
No. Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. If the baseplate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after the actual baseplate installation.
Be sure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Paint cut frame edges to prevent rusting.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions. Many Blue Ox baseplates are designed to use existing holes and hardware to mount the baseplate to the towed vehicle, but even though bolts are there, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts.
If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, for your safety and the preservation of your baseplate, be sure to use a replacement bolt of the same grade. In most cases it will be Grade 5. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to follow and/or altering these installation instructions in either installation or required equipment will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Ensure that your product is registered online at www.blueox.com. It is crucial to register your product so that you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls. Coverage under the warranty will be valid only if the customer warranty card is returned by the original purchaser within 30 days of purchase.

Grade 5 bolts (used in the BX1716 kit) should be torqued to 78 foot-pounds. Always apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
Safety cables are strongly recommended. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the baseplate connection fails. Cables must be attached to the frame and must not contact wires, hoses or brake lines.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight voids the warranty. Check your vehicle owner's manual for towing specifications.
The baseplate must be replaced and cannot be reused. Accident damage can be unseen and reusing it could cause more damage or serious injury.
Verify that all electrical connections are plugged in before reinstalling the fascia. Check that the wiring harness (gray) on the passenger side is properly connected. For Cadillac Escalade models, ensure the plug (black) and wiring loom clips are properly reconnected.
The dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. While the baseplate was designed for easy installation, it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances. Contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051 for assistance.
Always use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening. Tighten all bolts according to the torque chart provided. Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for loose bolts and retighten to the recommended specifications.
Reposition the safety cables so they do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. If the baseplate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after the actual baseplate installation. Ensure cables are secured to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Information sheet.
