Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BlueOx Tow Bar Base Plate, Front Mount, RV Flat Towing for Select, CHEVY TRAVERSE LTZ (Part #FDRWBX1706) fits 2013-2017 Chevrolet Traverse models. The 2017 model year is the last year covered by this part number. For newer models, check for an updated version.
The BlueOx Tow Bar Base Plate, Front Mount, RV Flat Towing for Select, CHEVY TRAVERSE LTZ (Part #FDRWBX1706) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, the BX1706 baseplate is designed for 2013-2017 Chevy Traverse vehicles. However, dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and the baseplate may need to be tailored slightly to compensate for manufacturer tolerances. The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR; exceeding this weight will void the warranty.
The attachment tab height is 18 inches and the attachment tab width is 24 inches.
Required tools include: large vise grip, flat screwdriver, utility knife, reciprocating saw, torque wrench, drill, tape measure, 13/32" drill bit, 1/2" drill bit, 7MM socket, 10MM socket, 9/16" socket, 9/16" wrench, and T20 Torx. You will also need Loctite Red for all bolt threads.
Yes. The fascia, fascia shroud, and windshield washer fluid reservoir must be removed before baseplate installation and reinstalled afterward. The temperature sensor must also be temporarily moved. All removed items should be placed on a flat, sturdy surface and will be reinstalled unless otherwise noted.
Yes. Drilling is required. You will drill holes with a 13/32" drill bit in the frame to mount the baseplate, and a 1/2" drill bit to relocate the temperature sensor. Trimming of the frame with a reciprocating saw is also required on both sides of the vehicle.
Using a reciprocating saw, trim an area on the frame on both sides of the vehicle. Cut the bottom flush with the bottom rail and vertically just inside the rib (approximately 1-5/8"), then 2-1/2" back at the top. After cutting, use good quality paint to spray cut edges to prevent rusting.
Measure down 2-13/16" from the top of the frame to the top of the baseplate. Measure 6-1/4" from the front of the frame to the back of the baseplate. Level the baseplate and clamp into position before drilling and fastening.
The manual provides general torque charts for Grade 5 and Grade 8 inch bolts, and Grade 8.8 and Grade 10.9 metric bolts. For example, 3/8" Grade 5 bolts torque to 33 foot-pounds, and 3/8" Grade 8 bolts torque to 47 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite Red applied to threads before tightening. Refer to the torque chart on page 1 for the specific bolt size and grade used in your installation.
The kit includes: 4 nut plates with 14" wire (3/8"-16), 1 baseplate, 2 attachment tab assemblies, 1 breakaway bracket, 1 1/4"-20 x 3/4" hex head bolt, 2 #10-32 1/2" round slotted head screws, 4 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" hex head bolts, 4 3/8"-16 x 1" hex head bolts, 1 #10-16 x 1" self drilling screw, 2 #12-14 x 1" self drilling screws, 4 3/8"-16 hex nuts, 2 #10-32 hex nuts, 1 1/4"-20 hex flange Whiz Lock nut, 18 1/4" flat washers, 8 3/8" lock washers, 2 #10 lock washers, 1 4-way bracket, 2 class IV safety cables, 2 1/2" quicklinks, and 2 black cap plug receivers.
Place six (6) 1/4" flat washers onto each of the washer reservoir studs, then reinstall the reservoir using the original 10MM nuts. This spacing prevents the reservoir from contacting the frame.
First, remove the push pin from the temperature sensor and temporarily move it above the bumper. After the baseplate is installed, drill a 1/2" hole into the plastic shrouding on the driver's side at the original location or a new location, then snap the temperature control into the hole.
2013 models: Remove three (3) screws from the outer edge of the wheel well on both sides using a T20 Torx. 2014 models: Remove two (2) lower screws using a T20 Torx and one (1) upper screw using a 7MM socket on both sides of the vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. The cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed.
The BX8848 4-Diode Light Wiring Kit is recommended for the 2013-2017 Chevy Traverse. The manual does not specify whether it is required or optional, only that it is recommended.
Attach the breakaway bracket to the metal bumper with the #10-16 x 1" self drilling screw at the desired location. Then attach the breakaway to the bracket using the 1/4" hardware provided.
Yes. Hold the fascia as close to its original position as possible, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs, then reinstall the fascia and fascia shroud.
Be sure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. This includes verifying that all wiring is properly connected and that any electrical components removed during installation are working correctly.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use if applicable.
