The Blue Ox BX1681 Tow Bar Bracket is a superior automotive part designed to meet your towing needs. Crafted from high-quality steel and furnished with a black powder coat finish, this robust and durable bracket ensures maximum resilience against wear and tear. The custom design of the Blue Ox base plates allows a perfect fit for your specific towed vehicle. Coming with all necessary hardware and easy-to-understand instructions, it offers a hassle-free, do-it-yourself installation experience.

Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1681 is designed for 2008-10 GMC Yukon 2500. Confirm your vehicle is within this model year range. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051.
Tow bar adapters are NOT to be used with vehicles weighing over 5,000 lbs. The weight of these vehicles is near the Class III 5,000 lbs rating limitation, and some models depending on options may well exceed this rating. Be sure to confirm the weight of your individual vehicle before towing. If your vehicle exceeds 5,000 lbs, you must use either the Aventa II (rated 10,000 lbs) or Aventa LX tow bar instead of an adapter.
The kit includes: two baseplate weldments (driver side 61-6525 and passenger side 61-6526); eight 1/2-13 X 1 1/4" Grade 5 hex bolts with lock washers; four 1/4-20 X 3/4" Grade 5 hex bolts with lock washers and flat washers; one 90-degree electrical bracket; two 4-way connector adapters; two removable attachment tab assemblies; two permanent baseplate safety cables (36" Class IV); two 1/2" quicklinks; and two receiver cap plugs. The BX8869 Bulb & Socket Wiring Kit is recommended but sold separately.
Required tools are: 18MM socket, 3/4" socket, 18MM wrench, 1/4" wrench, 11/16" wrench, flat screwdriver, and utility knife. You will also need Loctite RED threadlocker for all bolts. A torque wrench is required to tighten bolts to specification.
Blue Ox towing products and accessories are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051. The manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and minor adjustments may be necessary to compensate for manufacturer tolerances.
Yes. Using an 18MM socket, remove the bottom two metric bolts from the tow hook on both sides of the vehicle. Pull the tow hook forward and set aside. The tow hooks will not be reinstalled.
Yes, trimming of the fascia is required. For crew cabs, use a utility knife to cut out around the tow hook opening to the lip on the inside to make the opening larger, and round the corners to prevent cracking. Do this on both sides. For 2008 GMC Yukon XL 2500, push down on the plastic as necessary when sliding the baseplate into the frame end.
Slide the baseplate into the frame end to align with the existing tow hook holes on the frame rail. Push down on the plastic if necessary. Do this on both sides. Start all four bolts and remount any hole if necessary, as every vehicle is different.
The manual states to tighten all bolts according to the torque chart on the front page or page 3 of the Baseplate Towing General Instructions. For Grade 5 bolts (which are used in this kit), the torque specification for 1/2" bolts is 78 foot-pounds. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts before tightening.
For Grade 5 bolts (which are used in this kit), the torque specification for 1/4" bolts is 10 foot-pounds. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts before tightening.
Yes, Loctite RED is required on all bolts before tightening. The manual emphasizes: "BE SURE TO USE LOCTITE® RED ON ALL BOLTS BEFORE TIGHTENING." This is critical for safety and proper fastener retention.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The manual recommends securing the cables to the frame of the vehicle. If additional options interfere with the suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle.
The kit includes one 90-degree electrical bracket (part 101-6135) and two 4-way connector adapters (part 101-5822). The BX8869 Bulb & Socket Wiring Kit is recommended but sold separately. The electrical connector is installed using 1/4 x 3/4" hex bolts with 1/4" lock washers and whiz nuts.
Yes. Be sure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning BEFORE installing the fascia.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. Their principle function is to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame and baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. DO NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
The attachment tab height is 16" and the attachment tab width is 32".
Yes. The BX1681 includes two removable attachment tab assemblies (part 62-3468). Remove the attachment tabs when not in use.
