Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Loctite Red is also required for all bolt threads.
The following components must be removed and reinstalled after baseplate installation: front fascia, headlight assemblies (both sides), windshield washer fluid reservoir, and the metal bumper (which is not reinstalled). The radiator cross member will drop slightly when the bumper is removed and must be repositioned during baseplate installation.
Yes. Drilling is required. You must drill two 1 1/4" holes into the frame on each side using a 1 1/4" hole saw to allow access for tightening bolts. The manual warns to be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length when using power drills.
Yes. Cutting and trimming are required. You must use a reciprocating saw to cut straight down on dashed lines on the front of the frame on both sides and bend the frame across the bottom (Step 8). Some models may require trimming of plastic areas below the tube (Step 9). The back side of the front fascia requires trimming with a reciprocating saw (Step 18), and the grille area in front of the attachment tabs must be trimmed with a utility knife to create an opening for the tabs (Step 19). The manual recommends using good quality paint to spray cut frame edges to prevent rusting.
Yes. A floor jack is required to hold the radiator cross member up in place during baseplate installation. When the metal bumper is removed in Step 7, the radiator cross member will drop slightly and must be supported with a floor jack while the baseplate is being installed.
The manual provides general torque specifications for Grade 5 and Grade 8 bolts in inch sizes, and Grade 8.8 and Grade 10.9 bolts in metric sizes. For example, 3/8" Grade 5 bolts torque to 33 ft-lbs, and 3/8" Grade 8 bolts torque to 47 ft-lbs. Metric 10MM Grade 8.8 bolts torque to 31 ft-lbs. All bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart provided unless otherwise specified. Loctite Red must be used on all bolt threads before tightening.
Existing bolts are reused at specific points: four M10 x 1.5 x 35 hex flange screws and four M8 x 1.25 x 35 hex flange screws from the vehicle are reused to mount the baseplate. Additionally, the two 13MM bolts and two 10MM bolts removed from the bumper in Step 7 are reinstalled in Step 14 to hold the radiator support back in place. All other fasteners are supplied in the hardware kit.
1. Insert one existing 13MM bolt removed in Step 7 to temporarily hold the baseplate in place on each side (Step 11). 2. Drill two 1 1/4" holes into the frame on each side (Step 12). 3. Install 3/8"-16x1" hex bolts with Loctite, 3/8" lock washers and 3/8" flat washers into the two outside holes, tightened with 3/8"-16 hex flange whiz lock nuts (Step 13). 4. Install a 1/2"-13x1" hex bolt with Loctite, 1/2" lock washer and 1/2" flat washer into the inside hole, tightened to a 1/2" wire nut inserted into the frame (Step 13). 5. Reinstall the two 13MM bolts and two 10MM bolts removed in Step 7 to hold the radiator support back in place (Step 14).
After cutting the frame in Step 8, you must hit the top of the frame a couple of times with a hammer to get it level. Use a straight edge as a guide to ensure the frame is properly leveled on both sides of the vehicle. This preparation is necessary before placing the baseplate on the frame.
The BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. The baseplate includes a 6-pin connector and 4-pin connector for electrical connections, and a breakaway switch bracket is included.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications and ensure you do not exceed the GVWR.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX2628 includes two Class IV 36" safety cables and quicklinks. These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. The cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The recommended installation is to secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame of the vehicle. The manual shows two options for cable routing. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle. If additional options interfere with the suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables.
Be sure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. This includes the headlight assemblies and windshield washer fluid reservoir electrical connections.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on the baseplate. Do NOT substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to follow these requirements will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Blue Ox offers a three-year limited warranty to the original retail purchaser. The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. The warranty is valid only if the customer warranty card is returned within 30 days of purchase and a copy of the original invoice accompanies any warranty claim. The warranty is non-transferable and does not cover incorrect or improper installation, improper use, modification, neglect, failure to maintain, misuse, accident, normal wear and tear, paint, or rust. The warranty does not cover loss of use, loss of time, inconvenience, mileage, transportation expense, return shipping, mechanic travel time, road service, towing, rental during repairs, travel, lodging, or loss of personal property.

This is normal. When the metal bumper is removed in Step 7, the radiator cross member will fall down slightly. Use a floor jack to hold the radiator cross member up in place during baseplate installation (Step 11). After the baseplate bolts are installed in Step 13, reinstall the two 13MM bolts and two 10MM bolts removed in Step 7 to hold the radiator support back in place (Step 14).
The dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. While the baseplate was designed for easy installation, it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances. Some models may need to have the plastic area below the tube trimmed. Set the baseplate on top of the frame and clamp into place with vise grips. Take a marker and draw a line on the plastic piece below the tube, then remove the baseplate and trim away the plastic area outlined using a reciprocating saw. Do this on both sides of the vehicle.
After cutting the frame in Step 8, you must hit the top of the frame a couple of times with a hammer to get it level. Use a straight edge as a guide to ensure proper alignment. Do this on both sides of the vehicle before proceeding with baseplate installation.
