Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Required tools include: reciprocating saw, 1 1/4" hole saw, utility knife, hammer, Phillips screwdriver, flat screwdriver, and sockets in the following sizes: 3/4", 9/16", 8MM, 13MM, 10MM, and 5.5MM. Loctite RED is also required for all bolt threads.

The fascia, headlights, and windshield washer fluid reservoir must be removed during installation and reinstalled afterward. The metal bumper is also removed and not reinstalled. Some drilling and trimming of plastic components is required. All removed components should be placed on a flat, sturdy surface during installation.
1. Remove two plastic Phillips push pins and one 10MM bolt from the flat plastic piece on top (both sides). 2. Remove three 5.5MM bolts forward of the front tire on the wheel well (both sides). 3. Remove two 5.5MM bolts underneath (both sides). 4. Remove three push pins across the middle and pull fascia up and out. 5. Remove four 10MM bolts from headlight assembly, pull forward, and disconnect electrical connections (both sides). 6. On passenger side, remove one 8MM bolt from top of washer reservoir and two 10MM bolts from sides; disconnect electrical and hose connections; cap fluid openings. 7. Remove two 13MM bolts from top of metal bumper and one from bottom, plus one 10MM bolt from top and one from bottom (both sides); metal bumper is not reinstalled.
Yes. Using a 1 1/4" hole saw, you must drill two 1 1/4" holes into the frame on each side to allow space for an extension to tighten bolts. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length.
A reciprocating saw is used to: (1) cut straight down on dashed lines on the front of the frame and bend across the bottom (both sides); (2) trim away plastic area below the baseplate tube after marking with a marker (both sides, being careful on passenger side not to damage area behind); and (3) trim away plastic areas on the back side of the fascia in four locations (both sides of fascia). After cutting frame edges, use good quality paint to spray cut edges to prevent rusting.
Yes. The frame must be cut straight down on dashed lines and bent across the bottom on both sides. After cutting, frame edges must be painted to prevent rusting. These are permanent modifications to the vehicle structure.
No. The metal bumper is removed in Step 7 and is not reinstalled. Only the bolts that held it are set aside.
Place the baseplate on top of the frame and line up the holes in the baseplate with the existing holes on top of the frame. Insert one existing 13MM bolt removed in Step 7 to hold the baseplate into place on both sides. Use a floor jack to hold the radiator up in place during this process.
For inch bolts: 1/4" Grade 5 = 10 ft-lbs, Grade 8 = 14 ft-lbs; 5/16" Grade 5 = 19 ft-lbs, Grade 8 = 29 ft-lbs; 3/8" Grade 5 = 33 ft-lbs, Grade 8 = 47 ft-lbs; 1/2" Grade 5 = 78 ft-lbs, Grade 8 = 119 ft-lbs. For metric bolts: 8MM Grade 8.8 = 16 ft-lbs, Grade 10.9 = 22 ft-lbs; 10MM Grade 8.8 = 31 ft-lbs, Grade 10.9 = 40 ft-lbs; 12MM Grade 8.8 = 54 ft-lbs, Grade 10.9 = 70 ft-lbs.
On each side, use two 3/8-16x1" hex bolts (Grade 5) with 3/8" lock washers and 3/8" flat washers, tightened with 3/8-16 hex flange whiz lock nuts (outside holes). On the inside hole, use one 1/2-13x1" hex bolt (Grade 5) with 1/2" lock washer and 1/2" flat washer, tightened to a 1/2" wire nut inserted into the frame. All bolts must be installed with Loctite RED on the threads before tightening.
Yes. Loctite RED must be used on all bolt threads before tightening. The manual states: 'Be sure to use a sufficient amount of Loctite® Red on all bolt threads before tightening. Tighten all bolts according to the torque chart provided.'
After the baseplate bolts in Step 13 are installed, reinstall the top two 13MM bolts removed in Step 7 and the two 10MM bolts removed in Step 7 to hold the radiator support back in place. Do this on both sides of the vehicle.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The recommended installation secures the cables to the frame of the vehicle. If additional options interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Install on both sides of the vehicle.
1. Reinstall the washer reservoir on the passenger side and reconnect electrical connections and hoses. 2. Reinstall the headlight assemblies and reconnect all electrical connections. 3. Reinstall the fascia. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury.
Yes. Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended and must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. They are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. The cables must have adequate weight rating and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
Ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Failing to follow these instructions or altering the installation instructions will void the manufacturer's warranty. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor.
Blue Ox provides a three-year limited warranty from the date of delivery to the original retail purchaser. The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. Warranty coverage requires the customer warranty card to be returned within 30 days of purchase and a copy of the original invoice. The warranty does not cover incorrect or improper installation, improper use, modification, neglect, failure to maintain, misuse, accident, normal wear and tear, paint, or rust. The warranty is non-transferable and does not cover loss of use, inconvenience, or consequential damages.
Yes. Towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will void the warranty.
