Vehicle-specific custom design | Includes hardware and installation guide |

Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The kit includes 26 items: nut plate weldments, the baseplate, attachment tab assemblies, electrical bracket, convenience links, spacer tubes, hex head bolts in multiple sizes, screws, nuts, washers, lock washers, safety cables, quicklinks, and receiver cap plugs. See the parts list on page 3 for complete details and part numbers.
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. It is located on the driver's side tail light assembly. Consult with your installer or Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 to confirm whether it is required for your specific application.
Yes. Some drilling and trimming is required. Specifically, you will drill two holes into the side of the frame rail using a 13/32" drill bit, using the upper holes on the baseplate as a template. The frame extension cross member end portion must also be removed with a reciprocating saw to be flush with the tab.
Using a reciprocating saw, remove the end portion of the frame extension cross member so it is flush with the tab. After cutting, paint the edges with high-quality paint to prevent rusting. On 2011-2012 models only, locate the frame extension, remove the bolt using a 12MM socket, and slide the outer tube out; the outer tubes will not be reinstalled.
Yes. The fascia is removed and reinstalled as part of the baseplate installation. You will remove two push pins from the bottom edge of the front fascia and use a rubber mallet to bend the tabs upward where the push pins were located to prepare the opening for baseplate installation.
1/2"-13 Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 78 foot-pounds. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
12MM Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 31 foot-pounds. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
The installation sequence is: (1) remove belly pan bolts; (2) on 2011-2012 models, remove frame extension bolt and slide outer tube out; (3) trim frame extension cross member flush with reciprocating saw and paint edges; (4) remove fascia push pins and bend tabs upward; (5) insert spacer tube into side opening; (6) tilt baseplate back, slide cross tube, align forward hole, insert attachment tabs, clamp with vise grips, hand tighten; (7) drill two frame rail holes using 13/32" bit; (8) insert 3/8"-16 x 2" bolts from outside; (9) install nut plates inside frame and tighten; (10) install electrical bracket; (11) attach convenience links; (12) attach safety cables; (13) reinstall fascia and belly pan.
Insert the 7/8" O.D. spacer tube (item #8) into the opening in the side of the lower extension below the frame end so it is flush. This is done before tilting the baseplate back and sliding the cross tube.
Remove existing tie-down brackets prior to installing the convenience links that have been supplied with your baseplate.
Insert the removable attachment tabs into the baseplate, align tabs level with the vehicle, and clamp end plates to frame with vise grips. Tighten 1/2" hex nuts on both sides. Note: Items #7 and #8 need to be rotated 180° for 2011-2012 models so the holes face inward.
Attach the appropriate convenience link (driver side or passenger side) to the bottom of each side of the frame using two 12MM bolts with 12MM lock washers and 1/2" nut plates. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads and tighten according to the torque chart.
Align the electrical bracket with the center of the baseplate cross tube and install the self-tapping screws into the bottom of the cross tube using a 5/16" nut driver and drill.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables should be secured to a solid piece of the frame. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Install on both sides of the vehicle. Refer to the permanent baseplate safety cable installation instructions for recommended cable routing options.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. Do not store luggage, equipment, or other items on the towed vehicle, as this may cause you to exceed the towing capacity of the tow bar, baseplate, and its accessories. Reference your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. Permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. If the baseplate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation.
Watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. Improper installation against a wire or hose could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after the actual baseplate installation. Handle cosmetic parts carefully and use protective covers, rags, and specialty tools as needed to prevent damage. Be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length when using power drills.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use. No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to use genuine parts will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will void the warranty.
