Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1014 is designed specifically for 2004-06 Acura TL vehicles. The attachment tabs are 13.5" high and 27" wide. However, dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, so minor adjustments such as filing holes, bending electrical rods, or bending end plates may be necessary to compensate for manufacturer tolerances.
No. Due to the design of the removable tabs on the BX1014, the RangeFinder II and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used with this baseplate.
Most adapters cannot be used with the BX1014 baseplate. Only the BX8833 and BX88151 adapters are compatible. All other adapters are not supported.
Required tools include: 10MM socket, 12MM socket, 9/16" socket, 3/4" socket, 13/32" drill bit, 17/32" drill bit, Phillips screwdriver, flat screwdriver, side cutter, vise grips, and LOCTITE Red. A drill and appropriate power tools are needed to use the drill bits.
The kit includes: one baseplate weldment (61-6051), driver's and passenger's side 1/2" nut plates, four 1/2-13 x 1.5" Grade 5 bolts with lock washers, four 3/8-16 x 1" Grade 5 bolts with lock washers and hex nuts, one 25-degree electrical bracket, two 1/4-20 x 3/4" bolts with lock washers and lock nuts, two #10-32 x 1/2" slot round head screws with lock washers and hex nuts, two 4-way connector adapters, two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables, two 3/8" quicklinks, two black cap plugs, and two #10-16 x 1" self-drilling screws. All fasteners are zinc-plated.
Yes. The front fascia and metal bumper must be removed and reinstalled as part of the baseplate installation process. This is required to access the frame rails and mounting points.
Yes. Drilling is required. You will drill four holes in the frame rails: two upper holes using a 17/32" drill bit and two lower holes using a 13/32" drill bit on each side of the vehicle. The baseplate is used as a template to mark the hole locations.
Yes. Trimming of the fascia is required. In step 10, it may be necessary to trim off the front edge of the reservoir with side cutters to open area for the baseplate. In step 15, the lower grille must be trimmed to allow the attachment receivers to come through.
1. Remove pushpins and fasteners from the front fascia (steps 1-9). 2. Remove the metal bumper (step 11). 3. Position the baseplate on the frame rails and clamp with vise grips (step 10). 4. Drill the four mounting holes using the baseplate as a template (step 10). 5. Install the lower 3/8" bolts and tighten with LOCTITE Red (step 10). 6. Install the 1/2" nut plates and upper bolts with LOCTITE Red (step 12). 7. Reinstall the metal bumper (step 13). 8. Install the electrical bracket (step 14). 9. Reinstall the fascia and trim the lower grille (step 15). 10. Install the tow bar and safety cables according to their instructions.
Slide the baseplate end onto the frame as far forward as possible and position it 1/4" below the webbing on the top edge of the frame rail. Clamp vise grips to the lower webbing on both sides of the vehicle to hold it in position while drilling.
For Grade 5 bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 154 ft-lbs. The BX1014 uses 1/2-13 bolts (torque to 78 ft-lbs) and 3/8-16 bolts (torque to 33 ft-lbs). LOCTITE Red must be applied to all bolts before tightening.
Torque 1/2-13 Grade 5 bolts to 78 foot-pounds. These are the upper mounting bolts that secure the baseplate to the nut plates on the frame rails. Apply LOCTITE Red to all bolts before tightening.
Torque 3/8-16 Grade 5 bolts to 33 foot-pounds. These are the lower mounting bolts that secure the baseplate to the frame rails. Apply LOCTITE Red to all bolts before tightening.
The kit includes one 25-degree electrical bracket (part 101-6692), two 4-way connector adapters (part 101-5822), and two #10-32 x 1/2" slot round head screws with lock washers and hex nuts for mounting the bracket. The electrical bracket is installed just below the fascia on the radiator cross member using the two self-tapping screws. The manual recommends the BX8848 4 Diode Wiring Kit for this vehicle, though specific wiring instructions are not provided in this document.
Failure to read and follow the installation instructions could result in separation of the towed vehicle from the tow bar, causing property damage, loss of towed vehicle, personal injury or death. This is why professional installation by a Blue Ox Dealer is recommended, and why all bolts must be torqued correctly with LOCTITE Red applied.
No. Even though bolts may already exist on your vehicle, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and the hardware specified in the baseplate installation instructions. Using incorrect or inadequate fasteners could result in baseplate failure and separation of the towed vehicle.
Yes. LOCTITE Red must be applied to all bolts before tightening. This is stated multiple times in the installation instructions and is critical for preventing bolt loosening and baseplate failure.
Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do fit work. While the manual provides detailed instructions, professional installation is recommended due to the complexity of the work, which includes fascia removal, drilling, trimming, and precise torque specifications. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.us or by calling (402) 385-3051 or toll-free (888) 425-5382.
Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. For your safety and preservation of the baseplate, use a replacement bolt of the same grade as the original. Most bolts on the BX1014 are Grade 5. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor, or by calling the 24/7 Customer Care Team at (402) 385-3051.
The attachment tab height is 13.5" and the attachment tab width is 27".
In step 10, remove the outside lower metric bolt from the metal bumper on the passenger's side using a 12MM socket. In step 11, remove two metric bolts from the top side and one from the lower side of the metal bumper just below the headlight assembly on both sides of the vehicle. Note that the outside metric bolt on the passenger's side will not be reused when the bumper is reinstalled.
Using the two self-tapping screws (part 201-0654, #10-16 x 1"), install the electrical bracket (part 101-6692, 25-degree) just below the fascia on the radiator cross member. The bracket is mounted after the baseplate is secured and before the fascia is reinstalled.
Set the pushpins and bolts aside as you remove them, as they must be reinstalled later when the fascia is put back on the vehicle. Keep them organized so you can reinstall them in their original locations.
Hold the fascia as close to its original position as possible. Trim the lower grille to allow the attachment receivers to come through the lower grille opening. Then reinstall the fascia and all the pushpins and fasteners you removed in steps 1-9.
