Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

No. The BX1684 is designed for 2005-2010 Chevy Cobalt with no turbo only. Do not use on turbocharged models.
Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended. The Acclaim tow bar may be used but will not fold and store on the front of the vehicle. The RangeFinderII, Adventurer, and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used due to the design of the removable tabs. Adapters cannot be used except the BX8833 and BX88151.
Most adapters cannot be used with the BX1684. Only the BX8833 and BX88151 adapters are compatible. All other adapters are incompatible with this baseplate.
The front fascia and metal bumper must be removed. On the passenger's side, the horn bracket and air ram intake are also removed. The fascia is reinstalled after baseplate installation with modifications to allow the attachment tabs to pass through.
Yes. Drilling is required. Using a 13/32" drill bit, you must drill four holes on the driver's side and four holes on the passenger's side to mount the baseplate to the frame rails (step 12).
Yes. Trimming of the front fascia is required. The air dam must be trimmed on both sides. Additionally, the bottom edge of the tab connecting to the intake tube front bolt location and the air dam just below the metal bumper must be cut and removed with a utility knife (step 15). The top style of the lower grill opening must be cut on both sides to allow the attachment tabs to pass through (step 16).
Yes. A reciprocating saw is required to remove sections of the metal bumper. You must mark and remove areas from the inner and outer edges of the bumper brace along the bottom edge of the metal bumper, flush with the inside and outside edges of the frame rails on both sides (steps 8-9).
Required tools are: 7MM socket, 10MM socket, 9/16" socket, 13/32" drill bit, utility knife, large vise grip, reciprocating saw, and Loctite RED. A power drill is needed for drilling the frame holes. Protective covers and rags may be needed to prevent damage to cosmetic parts.

No. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, you must order a replacement bolt of the same grade through your nearest Blue Ox dealer or distributor. Most bolts in this kit are Grade 5. Using the correct grade is essential for safety and baseplate preservation.

The manual references a torque chart on the front page and page 3 of the Baseplate General Towing Instructions, but those pages are not included in this document. The manual states: 'TIGHTEN ALL BOLTS ACCORDING TO THE TORQUE CHART ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS OR ON PAGE 3 OF THE BASEPLATE GENERAL TOWING INSTRUCTIONS.' You must consult the general towing instructions or contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 for the specific torque values for each bolt size and grade used on this baseplate.
The attachment tab height is 14.25" and the attachment tab width is 20".
The baseplate should measure approximately 7/8" from the bottom side of frame ribbing down to the top edge of the baseplate. The baseplate should be positioned as far forward as possible on both sides (step 11).
The baseplate includes a 6-way round electrical connector. The manual notes that a BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is available as an optional accessory for this vehicle. The electrical connector location is on the fascia's lower air dam just below the license plate (step 17). Yes. Two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables are included with the BX1684 kit. Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. The permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for: cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications using Loctite Red. Check that all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. Verify that the attachment tabs are properly installed and secure.
After installation, verify: (1) all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning before reinstalling the fascia (step 16); (2) the horn bracket is properly reinstalled on the driver's side with all electrical connections plugged in (step 13); (3) the air intake tube is reinstalled to its original position (step 14); (4) the fascia is reinstalled with proper cuts to allow the attachment tabs to pass through (step 16); (5) all bolts are tightened to the correct torque specifications using Loctite Red; (6) the baseplate measures approximately 7/8" from the bottom of frame ribbing to the top edge of the baseplate; (7) safety cables are properly connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member.

If the fascia does not fit properly after cutting the attachment tab openings: (1) Verify that the cuts made in step 15 (bottom edge of the tab and air dam) are correct; (2) Verify that the cuts made in step 16 (top style of the lower grill opening) are correct and allow the tabs to pass through; (3) Minor adjustments may include filing holes slightly or bending end plates (step 18).
