Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

No. The BX2408 is designed for 2012-2020 Dodge Journey models without GT or ES trim. If your vehicle has GT or ES trim, this baseplate is not compatible.
The attachment tab height is 14 inches and the width is 22 inches.
Required tools include: large vise grip, flat screwdriver, utility knife, pliers, torque wrench, drill, reciprocating saw, tape measure, 1-1/4" holesaw, 13/32" drill bit, 7MM socket and wrench, 10MM socket and wrench, 13MM socket and wrench, 9/16" socket and wrench, and 11/16" socket. You will also need Loctite Red.
The manual does not explicitly state whether the battery must be disconnected before beginning installation. However, the battery is removed during the installation process (step 8). Contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051 for clarification on whether disconnection is required before starting.
Blue Ox recommends that baseplates be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting (402) 385-3051. However, the manual does not state that professional installation is mandatory.
Yes. Drilling and trimming are required. You will drill two 1-1/4" holes on each side of the frame (step 11), three 1-1/4" holes on the top of the bumper (step 13), and three 13/32" holes through the bumper (step 17). You will also use a reciprocating saw to connect holes and trim bumper flanges.
The outer flanges of the bumper are trimmed flush with the sides using a reciprocating saw on both sides. Three 1-1/4" holes are drilled on the top side of the bumper, positioned 3" from the back and centered across, on both sides. The lower grille may also require trimming for baseplate clearance during fascia reinstallation.
A notch is cut into the plastic deflectors on both sides of the vehicle. The notch extends down 2-1/2" from the top and is 3" high from front to back, to provide baseplate clearance.
Yes. The drilling and trimming of the bumper, frame, and plastic deflectors are permanent modifications. The manual does not provide instructions for reversing these modifications.
The torque specification for 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts is 33 foot-pounds. The manual specifies that Loctite Red must be used on all bolt threads before tightening.
The torque specification for 8MM Grade 8.8 bolts is 16 foot-pounds. These bolts are used on the driver side of the baseplate (step 15) and for battery tray reinstallation (step 19). Loctite Red must be used on all bolt threads before tightening.
The BX8848 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. However, the manual does not state whether it is required or optional.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for your specific GVWR.
Yes. Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended and are included with the BX2408 (part numbers 226-0049 and 229-0512). The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. They must not rub against hoses or moving parts. The cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
If the baseplate is involved in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. The fascia should be held as close to its original position as possible, and the lower grille should be marked and trimmed as needed for baseplate clearance.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use. Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
The hardware kit includes: 6 nut plates with 14" wire (3/8"-16), 2 attachment tab assemblies, 1 breakaway bracket, 1 electrical bracket, 9 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" bolts, 4 8MM-1.25 x 35MM bolts, 1 1/4"-20 x 3/4" bolt, 2 #10-32 1/2" screws, 1 #10-16 x 1" self-drilling screw, 2 #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws, 2 #10-32 nuts, 3 3/8"-16 lock nuts, 1 1/4"-20 nut, 3 3/8" flat washers, 9 3/8" lock washers, 2 #10 lock washers, 4 8MM lock washers, 2 Class IV safety cables, and 2 1/2" quicklinks.
No. The four factory bolts from the battery tray are removed in step 9 and will not be reused. When reinstalling the battery tray in step 19, use the 8MM bolts and 8MM lock washers provided in the hardware kit with Loctite Red.
On the driver side: (1) Install four 8MM-1.25 x 35MM bolts into existing holes and tighten without Loctite (step 15). (2) Remove these four bolts and reinstall the battery tray with the same 8MM bolts and lock washers using Loctite (step 19). (3) Reinstall the battery and terminal connections (step 19).
On the passenger side: (1) Level up the baseplate and clamp to the frame (step 16). (2) Using a 13/32" drill bit, drill the upper left hole through the frame (step 16). (3) Install a 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" bolt with lock washer into the hole, then install a 3/8" flat washer and 3/8"-16 lock nut from inside the frame (step 16). (4) Drill the remaining two holes and install the 3/8" fasteners (step 16).
Loctite Red should not be applied to the 8MM bolts on the driver side during initial installation (step 15). However, Loctite Red must be used on all bolt threads before final tightening, including when reinstalling the battery tray with 8MM bolts (step 19) and when installing all other fasteners. The manual emphasizes using a sufficient amount of Loctite Red on all bolt threads.
The permanent baseplate safety cables are attached to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables must then be secured to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The cables must not rub against any hoses or moving parts. If additional options interfere with the suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables.
The bumper is reinstalled using the existing fasteners (step 17). Three 13/32" holes are then drilled through the bumper. A 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" bolt, 3/8" lock washer, and 3/8"-16 nut plate are installed into each of the three holes using the 1-1/4" hole in the top of the bumper for access. This is done on both sides of the vehicle.
If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding with installation.
