Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX2167 is designed for 2003-07 Ford Expedition and 2003-06 Lincoln Navigator models. Verify your vehicle year and model against these ranges before purchasing. If your vehicle is outside these years, the BX2167 will not fit.
No. The BX2167 installation requires removal of factory tow hooks, which will not be reinstalled. The baseplate uses the existing tow hook mounting holes or wire nuts inserted into the frame opening.
The BX8869 is available as an accessory for the BX2167 on 2003-07 Ford Expedition and 2003-06 Lincoln Navigator. The manual indicates two mounting locations on the driver's side tail light assembly but does not specify whether it is included or sold separately. Contact your Blue Ox dealer for availability and pricing.
You will need a 15MM socket, 9/16" socket, 17/32" drill bit, and Loctite. The 15MM socket is used to remove factory tow hooks. The 17/32" drill bit is used to drill additional mounting holes. Loctite must be applied to all bolts before tightening.
Yes. Step 1 of the installation requires removing both factory tow hooks using a 15MM socket. The two metric bolts are located on the bottom side of each tow hook. Factory tow hooks will not be reinstalled after removal.
Yes, drilling is required. Using the baseplate as a template, you must drill additional holes with a 17/32" drill bit. No trimming is required. The drilling is permanent and cannot be reversed.
1. Remove the two metric bolts from the bottom of both factory tow hooks using a 15MM socket. 2. Align the baseplate (items 1 and 2) with the tow hook holes and tighten using existing bolts and nut plate. If your vehicle did not have factory tow hooks, insert wire nuts (item 3) into the frame opening and tighten 1/2" bolts and lock washers. 3. Using the baseplate as a template, drill remaining holes with a 17/32" drill bit. Insert wire nuts into the frame opening to align with drilled holes and tighten 1/2-13 x 1 3/4" bolts and lock washers. Apply Loctite to all bolts before tightening and torque according to the General Instruction Sheet torque chart.
The BX2167 includes: 8 wire nut plates (1/2"), 8 bolts (1/2-13 x 1 3/4", Grade 5), 8 lock washers (1/2"), 4 hex bolts (1/4-20 x 3/4"), 4 lock washers (1/4"), 2 flat washers (1/4"), 4 hex nuts (1/4-20), 2 slot round head screws (#10-32 x 1/2"), 2 lock washers (#10), 2 hex nuts (#10-32), 2 four-way connector adapters, 2 baseplate safety cables (36" Class IV), and 4 quicklinks (1/2").
Yes. Loctite must be applied to all bolts before tightening. This is required in both Step 2 and Step 3 of the installation. Loctite Red is recommended for all bolts according to the general information section.
The attachment tabs are 29 1/2 inches center to center with a height of 15 inches.
Use a 17/32" drill bit to drill the remaining holes after aligning the baseplate as a template.
Use only Grade 5 replacement bolts of the same size as the original. The main mounting bolts are 1/2-13 x 1 3/4". If a bolt is lost or damaged, contact your nearest Blue Ox dealer or distributor for genuine replacement parts. Do not use homemade or nontypical parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX2167 includes two 36" Class IV safety cables and four 1/2" quicklinks. These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. However, permanent baseplate safety cables are not a replacement for legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Mount the permanent baseplate safety cables from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines, as improper installation could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts. The manual shows recommended arrangements in illustrations on page 3. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications using Loctite Red. This is the owner's responsibility and is critical for safe towing.
Yes. It is crucial to register your BX2167 online at www.blueox.com so that you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
Yes. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use, if applicable.
Before installation, watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. If the baseplate is improperly installed against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation. It is your responsibility as the installer to ensure proper clearance and routing.
The BX2167 fits 2003-07 Ford Expedition and 2003-06 Lincoln Navigator only. Verify your vehicle year and model before purchasing.
