Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.

Yes. The front fascia must be removed for baseplate installation. The removal process involves removing six phillips head push pins from the top of the grill, two push pins from the underside of the fascia and belly pan, one phillips head screw from the front of each wheel well, and two 10 mm nuts from inside each fender. After installation, the fascia is trimmed where needed and reinstalled.
Yes. Holes must be drilled in the drive side frame and underside of the metal bumper. The manual specifies that a 17/32" drill bit and 13/32" drill bit are required tools. Exact hole locations are referenced to a drawing on page 2 of the manual. Some trimming is also needed on the back of the fascia.
Required tools are: 10 mm wrench, 17/32" drill bit, 13/32" drill bit, 3/4" socket, 9/16" socket, phillips screwdriver, vise grips, and Loctite Red. The vise grips are used to clamp the base plate to the bumper during drilling.

1. Remove six phillips head push pins from the top of the grill. 2. Remove two push pins from the underside of the fascia and belly pan. 3. Remove one phillips head screw from the front of each wheel well. 4. Pull the front wheel well away from the fascia and remove two 10 mm nuts from inside each fender; remove and set aside the fascia. 5. On the passenger side, insert items 2 and 3 (bolts and nut plates) into existing holes on the underside of the frame; snug items 5, 6, 7, and 8 (lock washers, hex nuts, hex bolts, and lock washers) into place but do not tighten yet; use Loctite on all bolts. 6. Clamp the base plate to the bumper with vise grips; drill holes in the drive side frame and underside of the metal bumper; tighten all fasteners and use Loctite on all fasteners. 7. Hold the fascia into place, trim where needed, and reinstall; reconnect all electrical devices. 8. Install the tow bar and safety cables per their respective instructions.
Yes. On the passenger side, there are existing holes on the underside of the frame that align with the baseplate. Items 2 and 3 (1/2-13 x 2 bolts with wire and 3/8-16 nut plates with wire) are inserted into these holes. The drive side requires drilling.

Yes. The kit includes two 4-way connectors (part 101-5822). After installation, all electrical devices must be reconnected to the fascia.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The kit includes two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (226-0046) and four 3/8 quicklinks (229-0359). The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications and use Loctite Red on all bolts.
Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. The installer must watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. If the baseplate is improperly installed against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation.
Yes. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use.
If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (usually Grade 5). Do not substitute homemade or nontypical parts. Repair parts may be ordered through your nearest Automatic Blue Ox dealer or distributor. Refer to the parts list for the correct part number and specifications.
