Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

The BX1719 is designed for 2003-2016 Chevy Express 1500/2500/3500 and GMC Savanna 1500/2500/3500 cargo and passenger vans. However, dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and the baseplate may need slight tailoring to compensate for manufacturer tolerances. Required tools are: large vise grip, flat screwdriver, torque wrench, drill, tape measure, 17/32" drill bit, 10MM socket, 15MM socket, 21MM socket, and 3/4" socket. You will also need Loctite Red for all bolt threads.
The kit includes: 12 × 1/2"-13 Whiz Nuts with 10" wire, 1 × BX1719 baseplate, 12 × 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" hex head bolts (Grade 5, zinc plated), 2 × #10-32 1/2" round slotted head screws, 1 × #10-16 x 1" self-drilling screw, 2 × #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws, 2 × #10-32 hex nuts, 12 × 1/2" lock washers, 2 × #10 lock washers, 1 × 4-way bracket, 2 × Class IV safety cables, 2 × 1/2" quicklinks, and 2 × black cap plug receivers.
Headlights must be removed on most vehicles. Use a 10MM socket to remove the two screws from each headlight, disconnect all electrical connections, and set aside. However, the headlights do not need to be removed on vehicles equipped with sealed halogen lights. All removed components will be reinstalled after baseplate installation.
You must remove the grille, park lights, and bumper. The grille is held by four screws (two on each side, removed with a 10MM socket) and clips at the bottom. Park lights are released by prying behind the grille with a flat screwdriver. The bumper is removed to access the lower valance. All items except the lower valance will be reinstalled after baseplate installation.
No. The lower valance is not reinstalled after baseplate installation. Five push pins must be removed from the lower valance on the bumper, and the valance will not be reinstalled for baseplate clearance.
Yes. Some drilling and trimming is required. You will use a 17/32" drill bit to ream out the bottom back hole on both sides of the vehicle, and continue drilling the remaining holes in the baseplate through the frame. The frame hole may need to be slightly reamed to allow whiz nut access. You should also drill a hole according to the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit instructions (recommended for this vehicle).
A 17/32" drill bit is used to ream out the bottom back hole and continue drilling the remaining holes in the baseplate through the frame.
The 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" bolts are Grade 5 and should be torqued to 78 foot-pounds. All bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart provided in the manual. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.
Position the baseplate onto the frame, lining up the front hole on the underside of the frame with the back hole of the baseplate. Square and clamp the baseplate securely to the frame before drilling. Then ream out the bottom back hole with a 17/32" drill bit and install a 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" bolt with lock washer into the hole and a 1/2" whiz nut on the inside of the frame. Repeat on both sides of the vehicle and fully tighten all hardware.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables should be secured to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Do this on both sides of the vehicle. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Be sure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia (bumper, grille, park lights, and headlights).
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use.

The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. You will need to drill a hole according to the tail light wiring kit instructions as part of the baseplate installation.
No. The manual states that many Blue Ox baseplates are designed to use existing holes, but you must not assume existing bolts are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (typically Grade 5).
No. The permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame.
Handling of some cosmetic parts when installing this product may require the use of protective covers, rags, specialty tools, etc. to prevent damage. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface.
Place all components that are removed on a flat, sturdy surface. All items will be reinstalled unless otherwise noted after the baseplate is installed. The only exception is the lower valance, which will not be reinstalled for baseplate clearance.
