Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Yes, the front fascia must be removed. Remove the Phillips screw with rubber bumper on both sides, three Phillips push pins and two push pins from the upper fascia opening, two metric bolts (10MM) on the lower corners, one metric bolt (10MM) inside each wheel on the upper corner, one push pin from the fascia tab on the bottom of the metal bumper (both sides), then disconnect tubing, plugs and electrical couplers before pulling the fascia forward.
Yes, the windshield washer reservoir must be removed during installation. Remove the three metric bolts (10MM socket) securing it and set it aside. It is reinstalled after the baseplate is in place and the fascia is trimmed.
You must drill two 1¼" holes (one per side) in the frame using a 1¼" drill bit or hole saw to gain access to the inside of the frame. You must also drill four 13/32" holes per side (eight total) using a 13/32" drill bit where the baseplate attaches. All drilling is permanent.
Yes, the lower grille will need to be trimmed or removed. The grille inserts near the fog lights must be trimmed to accommodate the baseplate. Optionally, you may remove clips from the lower grille openings on the back side of the fascia and remove the lower grille entirely. The fascia must also be trimmed as needed to allow openings for receiver tubes, convenience links, and electrical rods.
A 3/4" space must be maintained between the bottom of the metal bumper and the cross tube while the baseplate is temporarily clamped in place during installation.
Insert the nut plate (item 2) into the 1¼" hole to align with the drilled 13/32" holes on the inside of the frame. Tighten the 3/8-16 × 1¼" bolts (item 3) and lock washers (item 4) into the nut plates on all four 13/32" drilled holes on both sides. Apply Loctite Blue to all bolts before tightening.
Dimensional variations between vehicles can be considerable. If a bolt does not clear, it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow the bolt to pass through. Use care to avoid enlarging the hole excessively.
Yes, the tow bar and safety cables must be installed according to the instructions included in their packages. Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended. These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member and must not be mounted against wires, hoses or brake lines.
All bolts require Loctite Blue before tightening. The manual specifically states to use Loctite on all bolts before tightening the 3/8-16 × 1¼" bolts in step 9. The general information section also recommends using Loctite Red on all bolts and tightening to recommended specifications before each towing trip.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. However, they are not a replacement for legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. The cables must have adequate weight rating and must not be mounted against wires, hoses or brake lines.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to recommended specifications using Loctite Red. Hook up all towing equipment per manufacturer's instructions and recommendations.
Remove the attachment tabs when not in use.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Obtain replacement parts from your Blue Ox dealer or distributor.

No. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use only a replacement bolt of the same grade, which is usually Grade 5. Using a different grade could compromise the safety and integrity of the baseplate. Order replacement parts through your nearest Blue Ox dealer or distributor.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on the baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or nontypical parts. Doing so could compromise safety and the preservation of the baseplate.
The baseplate installer must watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses. Do not mount permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. If the baseplate is improperly installed against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation. Verify that all attaching points on the frame are present and intact before installation.
