Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. Yes, drilling is required. You will drill holes into the frame rail and the bottom of the metal bumper using a 13/32" drill bit. The baseplate is used as a template to mark the drilling locations. An opening must also be cut into the lower belly pan to gain access to the bottom of the frame rail for nut plate insertion.
Trimming of the air dam and fascia is required. Specifically: mark and cut plastic 1/2" back from the front edge of the air dam on both sides; cut and remove small tabs of the air dam using a utility knife to open the area below the metal bumper; cut 1/2" from the outer edge of the fascia opening on both sides; and cut a horizontal rib in the fascia to allow receivers to come through. These modifications are permanent.
Yes. The inside portion of the frame end plate must be tapped and bent toward the radiator 1/4" on both sides using a hammer. Additionally, due to dimensional variations between vehicles, minor adjustments may be necessary, which may include filing a hole slightly, bending electrical rods, adding shims, and/or bending endplates.
For 3/8" Grade 5 bolts, the torque specification is 33 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite RED applied before tightening.
For 6MM Grade 8.8 bolts, the torque specification is 16 foot-pounds. The 6MM-1 x 30MM hex bolt (part 201-0655) used to reinstall the horn bracket must have Loctite RED applied before tightening.

The fascia removal sequence is: (1) Remove six push pins from the top edge of fascia between headlight assemblies; (2) Remove two push pins and one metric bolt from the edge of the wheel well forward of the front tire on both sides; (3) Using a 10MM socket, remove the back metric bolt from the corner of fascia above the front tire and loosen the front metric bolt on the inside of the wheel well on both sides; (4) Remove two push pins on the lower edge of fascia forward of the front tire on both sides; (5) Remove five metric bolts from the lower edge of fascia, pull corners of fascia to the side, pull fascia forward and set aside.
Slide the baseplate onto the frame rail up to the bottom of the metal bumper and clamp it with a vise grip on both sides. Align the baseplate to the existing bolt location for the horn bracket on the driver's side and replace and tighten the existing metric bolt to hold the baseplate in place. Align the lower holes of the baseplate to the center of the lower frame webbing before drilling. Align the passenger's side to the frame at the same location as the driver's side and clamp to the bottom edge of the metal bumper. Using the baseplate as a template, drill the two lower holes and the top front hole with a 13/32" drill bit.
Insert 3/8-16 x 1" hex bolts into the two lower drilled holes of the baseplate and tighten the 3/8-16 hex nut and lock washer with a 9/16" socket. Insert the nut plate into the opening in the bottom of the frame to align with the upper front drilled hole, then tighten the 3/8-16 x 1.5" hex bolt and lock washer into the upper front drilled hole. Apply Loctite RED on all bolts before tightening and tighten according to the torque chart (33 foot-pounds for 3/8" Grade 5 bolts).
Using the baseplate as a template, drill a hole into the bottom of the metal bumper with a 13/32" drill bit on both sides. Insert the 3/8" nut plate with the 12" wire into the open end of the metal bumper to align with the drilled hole. Tighten the 3/8-16 x 1.5" hex bolt and lock washer with a 9/16" socket on both sides. Apply Loctite RED on all bolts before tightening and tighten according to the torque chart (33 foot-pounds for 3/8" Grade 5 bolts).
Remove the rubber grommet from the front bolt location on the air baffle. Reinstall the air baffle on the passenger's side to its original position using the existing metric bolt and lower push pin. Slide the front bolt location over the top of the front bolt of the baseplate. Using a 5/16" nut driver and drill, install the #10 x 1" self-drilling screw through the air baffle webbing and into the frame to help stabilize the air baffle. Do not drill into the baseplate.
Remove the existing metric bolt from the horn bracket on the driver's side that was installed in step 15. Reinstall the horn bracket using the 6MM-1 x 30MM hex bolt, 6MM lock washer, and 1/4" flat washer. Apply Loctite RED before tightening and tighten to 16 foot-pounds (6MM Grade 8.8 torque specification).
Hold the fascia as close to its original position as possible on the vehicle and mark the horizontal rib that needs to be cut to allow the receivers to come through the fascia. Cut this rib using a utility knife. Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The two included 36" Class III safety cables (part 226-0046) and four quicklinks (part 229-0359) can be used for this purpose. The cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. If the baseplate is improperly installed against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation. Do not mount permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Obtain replacement pins and clips from the tow bar manufacturer or your Blue Ox Dealer.
Before towing, ensure all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. Inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts.
