Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

The BX2236 is designed for 2003-05 Honda Civic Hybrid models with a manual transmission (not CVT). If your vehicle has a continuously variable transmission (CVT), this baseplate is not compatible. Confirm your transmission type before purchasing.
The BX8869 is the recommended tow bar accessory for 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid models, while the BX8847 is for 2005 models. These are optional accessories and are installed on the taillight assembly. The manual provides installation guidance for the BX8869 on 2004 models only.
Required tools are: 8MM socket, 10MM socket, 12MM socket, 9/16" socket, 13/32" drill bit, Phillips screwdriver, flat chisel, vise grips, utility knife, and Loctite. A hack saw or reciprocating saw is needed to cut forward webbing on the lower frame.
You must remove: the front fascia (including eight push pins from the plastic cover and eight push pins plus two Phillips screws from the lower back edge), both headlight assemblies, the windshield washer reservoir, and the metal bumper. The horn bracket must be relocated. These removals are necessary to access the frame for baseplate installation.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill four holes on the passenger's side and three holes on the driver's side using a 13/32" drill bit. The baseplate is used as a template to mark hole locations. Do not drill the existing hole for the washer reservoir on the driver's side.
Two modifications are required: (1) Cut and remove forward webbing on the lower frame on both sides using a hack saw or reciprocating saw. (2) Trim the horizontal rib on the fascia to allow attachment receivers to come through, or optionally remove the lower black plastic from the back side of the fascia opening.
Align the front edge of the baseplate with the end of the frame (marked by a black arrow in the manual). On the driver's side, align the baseplate to the existing hole for the front washer reservoir bolt. On the passenger's side, maintain the same distance from the top of the frame to the top of the baseplate. Clamp the baseplate in place with vise grips on both sides before drilling.
The baseplate uses 3/8-16 x 1 1/2" hex bolts with lock washers in the top and back drilled holes, and 3/8-16 x 1" hex bolts with lock washers in the lower drilled holes on the back side of the webbing. All bolts must be tightened into nut plates or with hex nuts. Loctite must be applied to all bolts before tightening.
Remove the original horn bracket bolt using a 12MM socket. Relocate the bracket to the existing hole just below the original location using a 5/16-18 x 3/4" hex bolt, lock washer, and whiz nut. Tighten according to the torque chart in the General Instruction sheet.
Reinstall the washer reservoir on the driver's side using the existing back bolts. Replace the existing front bolt with a 6MM-1 x 45MM hex bolt, 1/4" flat washer and lock washer (2003-04 models). For 2005 models, use a 6MM-1 x 30MM hex bolt instead. Do not over-tighten the front bolt.
The manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. If a bolt cannot clear, it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow proper alignment. This is a normal part of the installation process.
The attachment tabs are 20 inches center to center and have a height of 12 inches.
A 13/32" drill bit is required to drill the mounting holes in the frame.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with the BX2236 tow bar. These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member and must not be mounted against wires, hoses or brake lines. The cables must remain installed as long as the baseplate is on the vehicle. They are required in addition to, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Replacement parts must be obtained from Blue Ox to ensure safe operation.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications using Loctite Red.
