Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX2216 is designed specifically for 1995-97 Honda Accord V6 models. The baseplate mounts to the front underside of the car using ten bolts—five on each side. Compatibility with other model years or engine sizes is not supported by this manual.
No. The manual states: 'Utilization of Blue Ox baseplates with any tow bar not approved by Automatic Equipment Mfg. Company invalidates the limited warranty.' You must use only a tow bar approved by Automatic Equipment Mfg. Company.
The plastic belly pan (held by seven 10mm bolts) and both tie-down brackets (each with three 14mm bolts) must be removed. The belly pan bolts should be saved for later reinstallation. The tie-down brackets and their bolts will not be reused. The two engine cross beam bolts removed from one side (17mm socket) should be inspected and saved for reuse with Loctite applied.
Yes. A jack is required to support the left-to-right horizontal engine mount cross beam near the center while you remove and reinstall the cross beam bolts. The jack must be removed after the cross beam bolts are fully tightened.
Required tools are: 10mm socket, 14mm socket, 17mm socket, 3/4" socket, 3/4" wrench, Loctite Blue, jack, and utility knife. The utility knife is used to notch the belly pan during reinstallation.
The kit includes: one baseplate weldment (61-4663), two mounts—driver side (61-4664) and passenger side (61-4665)—four 1/2-13 x 1 1/2 Grade 5 hex bolts, six 10mm-1.25 x 35mm Grade 8.8 hex bolts, four 1/2 lock washers, four 1/2-13 hex nuts, six 10mm lock washers, six 10mm flat washers, and one transmission setup decal (292-2127). Four existing bolts from the engine cross beam are reused.
Drilling may be necessary. The manual states: 'The dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable. While the location and size of the holes in the baseplate were designed to facilitate easy installation, it may be necessary to file or drill a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear.' This is a case-by-case requirement depending on your specific vehicle.
A small amount of trimming on the air dam may be necessary. The manual states: 'A very small amount of trimming may be necessary on the air dam that runs along the bottom of the bumper.' This is not always required; it depends on your specific vehicle's fit.
After the baseplate is installed, the belly pan must be notched to fit around the new components. Use a utility knife to cut the notches. The exact notching pattern will depend on your specific vehicle's layout. Reinstall the belly pan using the original seven bolts (10mm socket) that were removed in step 3.
Tighten in this order: (1) First, tighten the four engine cross beam bolts (two per side, 17mm socket) completely. (2) Then tighten the six 10mm bolts (three per side, using a 17mm socket). (3) Finally, use a 3/4" wrench and socket to tighten the four 1/2-13 bolts connecting the baseplate to the mounts. Do not fully tighten any bolts until instructed in the sequence.
Yes. Apply Loctite Blue to the two engine cross beam bolts before reinstalling them (step 6) and to three of the 10mm x 35mm bolts before starting them through the mount (step 6). Loctite is listed as a required tool.
Yes. When installing the three 10mm x 35mm bolts through each mount, include a 10mm lock washer and a 10mm flat washer with each bolt. The kit includes six of each washer type (one set per bolt).
To avoid transmission damage, shift the transmission from Drive to Neutral (not from Reverse to Neutral) before turning off the engine and towing on all four wheels. Honda automatic transmissions modified in 1989 and later cannot be shifted rapidly from reverse to drive. If shifted from reverse to neutral only, the transmission remains partially in reverse—a condition that cannot be detected by revving the engine. Towing in this false-neutral condition will damage the transmission. Always shift through Drive before shifting to Neutral.
Yes. All Honda and Acura automatic transmission vehicles, any model and year, can be towed on all four wheels without special pumps or drive shaft disconnects. However, you must follow the correct transmission shifting procedure: shift from Drive to Neutral before turning off the engine. Failure to do so will damage the transmission.
Do not substitute other devices if the pin and clip are lost. Obtain replacement pin and clip from the tow bar manufacturer or Automatic Equipment Mfg. Company.
After installation, verify that: (1) all four engine cross beam bolts are fully tightened, (2) all six 10mm bolts are fully tightened, (3) all four 1/2-13 bolts connecting the baseplate to the mounts are fully tightened, (4) the belly pan is properly notched and reinstalled with all seven original bolts, (5) the air dam has been trimmed if necessary, (6) the transmission setup decal is installed on the dash or tow bar as a reminder to shift correctly before towing, and (7) the tow bar and safety cables are installed according to their instructions.
Yes, the BX2216 is designed specifically for 1995-97 Honda Accord V6 models. It must be used only with a tow bar approved by Automatic Equipment Mfg. Company.
You need: 10mm, 14mm, 17mm, and 3/4" sockets; 3/4" wrench; Loctite Blue; a jack; and a utility knife. All hardware is included.
Possibly. Drilling or filing a hole may be necessary depending on dimensional variations in your car. A small amount of air dam trimming may also be needed. The belly pan must be notched using a utility knife.
Tighten in this order: (1) four engine cross beam bolts completely, (2) six 10mm bolts, (3) four 1/2-13 bolts. Do not fully tighten any bolts until instructed in the sequence.
Shift from Drive to Neutral (not Reverse to Neutral) before turning off the engine. Shifting from Reverse to Neutral only leaves the transmission partially in reverse, which will cause damage when towing on all four wheels.
No special pumps or drive shaft disconnects are needed. However, you must follow the correct transmission shifting procedure (Drive to Neutral) before towing, or transmission damage will occur.
