Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1659 baseplate is designed for 2004–2009 Cadillac SRX models. The attachment tabs are 18 inches center to center with a height of 17 inches. Installation requires removal of the front fascia, horn bracket, metal bumper, air filter housing assembly and windshield washer reservoir.
Yes, the BX8848 is available for the 2004–2009 Cadillac SRX and is compatible with the BX1659 baseplate installation.
The following components must be removed: front fascia, horn bracket, metal bumper, air filter housing assembly, and windshield washer reservoir. These are removed in a specific sequence detailed in steps 1–16 of the installation instructions, beginning with push pins from the fascia and ending with the metal bumper.
Required tools are: 10MM socket, 13MM deep well socket, 9/16" socket, 3/4" socket, Phillips screwdriver, flat screwdriver, utility knife, reciprocating saw, 13/32" drill bit, and Loctite Red.
Yes, drilling is required. Using a 13/32" drill bit, you must drill two front holes on both sides of the baseplate after aligning the slotted hole and back hole with existing mounting points. The baseplate must be level with the vehicle when drilling.
Two modifications are required: (1) trimming of the air dam, and (2) cutting of the bracket on the washer reservoir. Specifically, on the passenger's side, measure 1/2" from the front washer reservoir bracket edge up to the bumper bracket and remove this portion of the bracket using a reciprocating saw to prepare the area for baseplate installation.
Remove the four push pins from the top edge of the fascia on both sides (step 1), then remove three push pins from the edge of the wheel well just forward of the front tire on both sides (step 2). Pull the wheel well back, remove one metric bolt and loosen a metric hex nut from the inside corner of the fascia on both sides using a 10MM socket (step 3). Finally, remove 12 push pins from the lower edge of the fascia, pull the fascia forward, disconnect the electrical plug from the light assembly and set it aside (step 4).
Loosen the two hose clamps from the engine air intake and filter assembly, slide the hose ends off, and disconnect the small tube from the lower side of the intake end (step 5). Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two Phillips screws from the filter assembly, disconnect the electrical plug and set the cover aside (step 6). Using a 10MM socket, remove two metric bolts from the filter assembly, lift the assembly tube end out of the fender and engine compartment, and set it aside (step 7).
Remove the metric bolt from the horn bracket on the driver's side using a 10MM socket, unplug the electrical connection and set it aside (step 8). Remove two metric bolts just above the washer reservoir on the driver's side with a 10MM socket (step 9), and remove the metric bolt from the lower washer reservoir and front bracket with a 10MM socket (step 10). While holding the reservoir, remove the metric bolt between the wheel well and reservoir with a 10MM socket, unplug electrical lines, disconnect and plug fluid lines, and set the reservoir aside (step 11).
Remove the metric bolt from the small radiator on the top side of the metal bumper using a 10MM socket (step 12). Remove the metric bolt from the lower bracket of the small radiator from the back side of the metal bumper and tie it up out of the way (step 13). Remove four push pins from the air dams on the metal bumper (step 14). Using a 10MM deep well socket, remove the four metric bolts from the back side of the bumper bracket on both sides and pull the metal bumper forward (step 15).
Align the slotted hole of the baseplate with the horn mount stud and the back hole of the baseplate to align with the existing hole on the driver's side. Slide the passenger's side of the baseplate up to align with the existing hole in the frame. While maintaining a level position with the baseplate to the vehicle, insert a 1/2" bolt plate into the end of the frame rail and into the back existing hole and baseplate. Tighten the 1/2" hex nut and lock washer on both sides. Using the baseplate as a template, drill the two front holes with a 13/32" drill bit on both sides, ensuring the baseplate is level with the vehicle. Insert 3/8" nut plates into the end of the frame rail to align with the drilled holes and tighten 3/8" hex bolts and lock washers according to the drawing on the last page. Use Loctite on all bolts before tightening and tighten all bolts according to the Torque Chart in the General Instruction Sheet.
The dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable. While the location and size of the holes in the baseplate were designed to allow for easy installation, it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear.
Reinstall the horn bracket, air filter assembly and hose, metal bumper, air dams and washer reservoir. Ensure all electrical components and hoses are plugged in properly. Reinstall the fascia and plug in electrical connections on all light assemblies. Then install the tow bar and safety cables according to the instructions included in their packages.
The BX1659 includes: two 1/2-13 x 1 1/4" bolt plates with 10" wire (part 61-4593), four 3/8" nut plates with 14" wire (part 61-5208), two 1/2" lock washers zinc plated (part 203-0012), two 1/2-13 hex nuts zinc plated (part 202-0005), four 3/8-16 x 1 1/4" Grade 5 zinc plated bolts (part 201-0368), four 3/8" lock washers zinc plated (part 203-0010), two #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws zinc plated (part 201-0979), two #10-32 x 1/2" slot round head screws zinc plated (part 201-0192), two #10 lock washers (part 203-0054), two #10-32 hex nuts (part 202-0047), two 4-way connectors (part 101-5822), two attachment assemblies (part 62-3469), two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (part 226-0046), two 3/8" zinc plated quicklinks (part 229-0359), and two receiver cap plugs black (part 290-0437).
Two 4-way round electrical connectors (part 101-5822) and two 6-way round electrical connectors are included with the BX1659 baseplate, as shown in the diagram on page 5.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Replacement pins and clips should be obtained from Blue Ox or an authorized dealer.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The BX1659 includes two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (part 226-0046). Each cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system; the weight rating of the two cables together will not qualify. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines.
Watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. If the baseplate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after the actual baseplate installation. Be aware of clearance between the coolant line and the gusset on the baseplate on the driver's side.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use (if applicable).
Yes, it is crucial to register your BX1659 baseplate online at www.blueox.com. Registration ensures you will be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (usually Grade 5). Use only genuine factory replacement parts on the baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or nontypical parts. Repair parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox dealer or distributor.
