Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

No. Due to the design of the removable tabs on the BX2229, the RangeFinder II tow bar cannot be used with this baseplate.

The front fascia, metal bumper, and headlight assemblies must be removed during installation and reinstalled afterward. Additionally, the front washer reservoir bolt plastic will need to be trimmed on 2003-04 models before installation.
Yes, drilling is required. The baseplate must be drilled into the frame using a 13/32" drill bit. For 2003-05 models, upper holes are also drilled using a 17/32" drill bit. The installation instructions note that minor adjustments may include filing holes slightly, bending electrical rods, or bending end plates to compensate for manufacturer tolerances.
Torque specifications for inch bolts are: 1/4" Grade 5 = 10 ft-lbs, Grade 8 = 14 ft-lbs; 5/16" Grade 5 = 19 ft-lbs, Grade 8 = 29 ft-lbs; 3/8" Grade 5 = 33 ft-lbs, Grade 8 = 47 ft-lbs; 1/2" Grade 5 = 78 ft-lbs, Grade 8 = 119 ft-lbs. For metric bolts: 6MM Grade 8.8 = 6 ft-lbs, Grade 10.9 = 8 ft-lbs; 8MM Grade 8.8 = 16 ft-lbs, Grade 10.9 = 22 ft-lbs; 10MM Grade 8.8 = 31 ft-lbs, Grade 10.9 = 40 ft-lbs; 12MM Grade 8.8 = 54 ft-lbs, Grade 10.9 = 70 ft-lbs.
1. Remove two pushpins from the top of the grille. 2. Remove one metric bolt from behind the fascia's upper corner on both sides using an 8MM socket. 3. Remove the metric bolt from the bottom of the fascia corner on both sides using a 10MM socket. 4. Remove six pushpins from the bottom of the fascia. 5. Remove five bolts under and one on the outside of the headlight assemblies on both sides using a 10MM socket; unplug and set aside. 6. For 2002 models, hold the baseplate in place, clamp with vise grips, and center to the bottom of the metal bumper. For 2003-05 models, align the baseplate sides with the front edge of the frame end, mark, and drill all holes using the 13/32" and 17/32" drill bits on both sides. 7. Remove metric bolts from the top and bottom of the metal bumper using a 12MM socket. Set the baseplate in place with drilled holes, insert 3/8-16 nutplates into the frame end, and start the 3/8-16 x 1 1/2" hex bolts and 3/8" lock washers without tightening. Slide the metal bumper between baseplate and frame, use 3/8" flat washers to level as needed, then tighten the 8MM-1.25 x 30MM hex bolts, 8MM lock washers, and 3/8" flat washers on the top side and existing bolts on the bottom side. Use LOCTITE Red on all bolts. 8. Reinstall the metal bumper and tighten the 1/2" lock washer and 3/8" lock washer for upper supports. 9. Reinstall the fascia and headlight assemblies; some trimming may be required. Install the washer reservoir on 2003-04 models after trimming the plastic bolt. 10. Install the tow bar and safety cables according to their instructions.

The manual states that many Blue Ox baseplates are designed to use existing holes and hardware, but you must not assume factory bolts are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware specified in the installation instructions. The manual specifies which factory bolts to reuse: the metric bolts removed from the fascia corners and headlight assemblies are reinstalled, and the existing bolts on the bottom side of the metal bumper are tightened as part of the final assembly.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX2229 kit includes 2 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (part 226-0046) and 2 3/8" quicklinks (part 229-0359). These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. The permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use LOCTITE Red on all bolts and tighten them to the recommended specifications. Additionally, ensure that the permanent baseplate safety cables are properly connected and not mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
