Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1995 baseplate is designed specifically for the 2011-2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the installation instructions, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding.
No. Due to the design of the removable tabs on the BX1995 baseplate, the RangeFinderII, Acclaim, and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used with this baseplate. Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended instead.
Most tow bar adapters cannot be used with the BX1995 baseplate. Only the BX8833, BX88262, and BX88151 adapters are compatible. Additionally, tow bar adapters are not to be used with vehicles weighing over 5,000 lbs.
Required tools include: 8MM, 10MM, and 12MM sockets; 9/16" socket; drill with 1/4" and 13/32" drill bits; torque wrench; tape measure; flat screwdriver; utility knife; large vise grips; reciprocating saw; and Loctite RED. A power drill is needed for drilling holes.
The kit includes: 11 nut plates (3/8"-16 with 14" wire), 2 attachment tab assemblies, 1 breakaway bracket, 2 hex head bolts (1/4"-20 x 3/4"), 2 round slotted head screws (#10-32 1/2"), 11 hex head bolts (3/8"-16 x 1-1/4"), 1 hex head bolt (8MM-1.25 x 35MM), 2 self-drilling screws (#12-14 x 1"), 2 hex nuts (#10-32), 1 hex flange whiz lock nut (1/4"-20), 1 hex nylon nut (1/4"-20), 11 lock washers (3/8"), 2 lock washers (#10), 1 lock washer (8MM), 1 electrical bracket, 2 safety cables, 2 quicklinks (3/8"), and 2 black cap plug receivers.
Yes. The plastic radiator cover, fascia, and washer reservoir must be removed during installation and then reinstalled after the baseplate is mounted. The radiator cover is removed by taking out six push pins. The fascia is removed after taking out multiple push pins and bolts. The washer reservoir on the passenger side is removed after disconnecting electrical and fluid lines and removing three bolts.
Yes. Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do "fit work". Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting the Customer Care Department at (402) 385-3051.
Yes. Drilling is required. You must drill five holes on each side of the vehicle using a 13/32" drill bit to mount the baseplate to the frame rails. Additionally, a 1/4" hole must be drilled through the front bumper if installing the optional breakaway bracket.
Yes. Trimming is required in two areas. First, the bumper horns must be trimmed 5" up from the bottom using a reciprocating saw. Second, two horizontal cuts (1" to 1-1/2" long) must be made on the side of each frame rail on existing holes to create openings for inserting nut plates. Finally, the fascia must be trimmed with a utility knife to allow the baseplate attachment tabs, convenience links, and breakaway (if applicable) to come through.
The drilling of five holes on each side of the frame rail (using 13/32" drill bit) and the trimming of the bumper horns and frame rail openings are permanent modifications. The fascia trimming is also permanent. These modifications cannot be reversed without welding or replacing parts.
For 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts, torque to 33 foot-pounds. For 3/8"-16 Grade 8 bolts, torque to 47 foot-pounds. All bolts must be tightened with Loctite RED before torquing according to the torque chart on the front page of the installation instructions.
For 1/4"-20 Grade 5 bolts, torque to 10 foot-pounds. For 1/4"-20 Grade 8 bolts, torque to 14 foot-pounds. These bolts are used for the optional breakaway bracket installation.
For 8MM Grade 8.8 bolts, torque to 16 foot-pounds. For 8MM Grade 10.9 bolts, torque to 22 foot-pounds. However, the 8MM-1.25 x 35MM bolt inserted into the existing hole on the passenger side (step 11B) should not be tightened with Loctite Red, as it will be removed and reused when reinstalling the washer reservoir.
The attachment tab height is 19" and the attachment tab width is 22".
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
No. Do not use the towed vehicle for storing luggage, equipment, etc. This may cause you to exceed the towing capacity of the tow bar, baseplate, and its accessories.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. Secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame of the vehicle. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle and are to be used in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables.
The permanent baseplate safety cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame of the towed vehicle and the baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. They are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar and must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system. The weight rating of the two cables together will not qualify—each cable must individually have adequate rating.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. It is the owner's responsibility to perform these inspections.
The BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle.
Yes. It is crucial to register your product online at www.blueox.com so that you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
Yes. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use, if applicable.
If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade. In most cases it will be Grade 5. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. Failing to use the correct replacement bolt will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Blue Ox Customer Care Department can be reached at (402) 385-3051. You can also visit www.blueox.com for the latest installation instructions, to find Blue Ox Dealers, and to register your product. Yes, the BX1995 is designed for 2011-2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. If your vehicle's front looks different than shown in the instructions, call (402) 385-3051.
Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended. RangeFinderII, Acclaim, and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used. Most adapters are incompatible; only BX8833, BX88262, and BX88151 adapters are compatible.
You need: 8MM, 10MM, 12MM, and 9/16" sockets; drill with 1/4" and 13/32" bits; torque wrench; tape measure; flat screwdriver; utility knife; large vise grips; reciprocating saw; and Loctite RED.
Torque 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts to 33 foot-pounds or Grade 8 bolts to 47 foot-pounds. Apply Loctite RED before tightening.
The baseplate must be replaced. Do not reuse it, as accidents can cause unseen damage that could result in more damage or serious injury.
Attach cables to the convenience link on the baseplate and secure to a solid piece of the vehicle's frame. Ensure cables do not rub against hoses or moving parts. Keep them installed as long as the baseplate is on the vehicle.
Inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Tighten all bolts to recommended specifications using Loctite RED.
The dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. Minor adjustments may be necessary to compensate for auto manufacturer's tolerances. These adjustments may include filing a hole slightly, bending electrical rods, or bending end plates to achieve proper alignment and level.
If additional mounting options interfere with the suggested cable mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts.
