Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Yes, the BX1844 baseplate is designed for 2009-2014 Nissan Cube vehicles. The manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, so the baseplate may need slight tailoring to compensate for manufacturer tolerances.
The attachment tab height is 15 inches and the attachment tab width is 22 inches.
Required tools include: large vise grip, flat screwdriver, utility knife, torque wrench, drill, reciprocating saw, 13/32" drill bit, 10MM socket, 12MM socket, 14MM socket, 9/16" socket, and 9/16" wrench. Loctite Red is also required for all bolts.

The fascia, bumper, frame extensions, and windshield washer fluid reservoir must be removed during installation. All items are reinstalled after the baseplate is installed, except the bumper reinforcement bracket on the driver side, which is not reinstalled.
Yes, drilling is required. A 13/32" drill bit is used to drill the top front hole through the frame on both sides of the vehicle. Additional baseplate holes are then drilled through the frame. The manual notes that some drilling and trimming is required as part of the installation process.
Trimming includes: plastic shrouding just below the bumper back to the seam on both sides; the upper portion of the frame face on the passenger side with two slits cut back to the frame side, then bent flush; the driver side similar to passenger side with the lower portion containing the factory nut removed; backsides of frame cuts marked and trimmed with a reciprocating saw; and the attachment plate from the driver side of the bumper.
Torque specifications for Grade 5 bolts are: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 154 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 257 ft-lbs. All bolts must be tightened with Loctite Red applied before tightening.
For Grade 8.8 metric bolts: 6MM = 6 ft-lbs, 8MM = 16 ft-lbs, 10MM = 31 ft-lbs, 12MM = 54 ft-lbs, 14MM = 89 ft-lbs, 16MM = 161 ft-lbs, 18MM = 222 ft-lbs. For Grade 10.9 metric bolts: 6MM = 8 ft-lbs, 8MM = 22 ft-lbs, 10MM = 40 ft-lbs, 12MM = 70 ft-lbs, 14MM = 117 ft-lbs, 16MM = 230 ft-lbs, 18MM = 318 ft-lbs.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. They are to be used in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure Loctite Red is applied to all bolts and tighten them to the recommended torque specifications. Hook up all towing equipment per manufacturer's instructions and recommendations.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again, as an accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.

The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. A hole must be drilled according to the tail light wiring kit instructions.
On the driver side, remove the screw from the electrical bracket using a 10MM socket, slide the bracket up the frame, and reinstall it in a higher position.
Position the baseplate onto the vehicle, aligning the top front edge of the baseplate with the frame rail while pulling the baseplate as forward as possible. Level and securely clamp the baseplate to the frame before drilling. Drill the top front hole through the frame using a 13/32" drill bit on both sides, then install 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" bolts with lock washers and lock nuts on the inside of the frame. Fully tighten all hardware.
For the bottom back hole, install a 3/8"-16 x 2" bolt with lock washer and lock nut plate on the inside of the frame, using the provided spacer between the frame and baseplate. This applies to the driver side; the passenger side uses the bottom middle hole instead.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The photo in the manual shows the recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle. If additional options interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle.
Yes, the breakaway switch is optional. If installing, fasten the bracket to the underside of the bumper with a #10 screw at the desired location, then install the breakaway to the bracket with the supplied 1/4" bolt and lock nut.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to follow these requirements will void the manufacturer's warranty.
