Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Yes. The fascia and bumper must be removed during installation and then reinstalled after the baseplate is mounted. The manual notes that the fascia and bumper are removed and reinstalled for baseplate installation.
Yes. Drilling is required. You will drill two holes into the side of the frame using a 13/32" drill bit on each side, one hole on the bottom of the plate using a 13/32" drill bit on each side, and one hole on the back side using a 1-1/4" hole saw on each side to insert the nut plates.
Yes. On the passenger side, you will use a utility knife to cut across the top of the plastic cover and remove it. You will also trim off a plastic tab on the passenger side using a utility knife.

For 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts, the torque specification is 33 foot-pounds. For Grade 8, it is 47 foot-pounds. The manual specifies that 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2" hex head bolts, Grade 5, zinc-plated are supplied. Always use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.
For 1/4"-20 Grade 5 bolts, the torque specification is 10 foot-pounds. For Grade 8, it is 14 foot-pounds. The manual includes a 1/4"-20 x 3/4" hex head bolt, Grade 5, zinc-plated in the hardware kit. Always apply Loctite Red before tightening.

No. The manual states: "Even though bolts are there, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions." You must use the supplied hardware kit bolts.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications and your vehicle's GVWR.
The BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle.
Raise the baseplate as high as possible until it hits the bottom of the bracket and as far back as it will go. Be sure it is level and clamp it in place on both sides before drilling.
Use a 13/32" drill bit to drill two holes into the side of the frame on each side, and one hole on the bottom of the plate on each side.
Use a 1-1/4" hole saw to drill the hole on the back side to insert the 61-5208 nut plates. Do this on both sides.
The 61-5208 nut plates are inserted into the frame end. You drill a 1-1/4" hole on the back side to access the frame, then insert the nut plates into the frame. The 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2" hex bolts and lock washers are installed through the baseplate into these nut plates.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. The BX1842 kit includes 2 class III safety cables (226-0046) and 2 quicklinks (229-0359) for this purpose.
The permanent baseplate safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The manual shows recommended arrangements. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts.
Be sure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications.

Place all components that are removed on a flat, sturdy surface. All items will be reinstalled unless otherwise noted after the baseplate is installed.
The dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. While the baseplate was designed for easy installation, it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances.
1. Remove seven push pins from the flat plastic piece on top of fascia using a flat screwdriver. 2. Pull back cover on top above the front tire and remove the bolt using a 10MM socket on both sides. 3. Remove ten bolts across the bottom of the fascia using a 10MM socket. 4. Remove three more bolts underneath the fascia in front of the tire using a 10MM socket on both sides. 5. In the wheel well just forward of the front tire, remove one push pin on both sides. 6. Pry out the wheel well cover and remove the bolt forward of the front tire using a 10MM socket on both sides. Pull the fascia corners out to the side and pull fascia forward.
Remove four bolts using a 12MM socket: two on the top and two on the bottom on each side. Unfasten all clips. Pull the bumper forward and set aside for later reinstallation.
On the driver's side, unsnap the plastic cover. On the passenger side, use a utility knife to cut across the top and remove the plastic cover. On the passenger side, trim off the plastic tab using a utility knife.
Yes. On the passenger side, remove the two bolts on the bottom of the radiator using a 10MM socket in order to swing it down and get it out of the way. After baseplate installation, reattach the radiator.
Yes. On the passenger side, remove the center bolt holding the washer reservoir using a 10MM socket.
On convertible models, the dampener on the passenger side will need to be removed and not reinstalled for baseplate installation.

The baseplate must be replaced immediately. Do not reuse a damaged baseplate or one involved in an accident. Unseen damage from an accident can cause failure during towing, resulting in separation of the towed vehicle and potential serious injury or death.

Reposition the cables immediately. The cables must not rub against any hoses or moving parts. If they cannot be routed safely to the frame rail or cross member as shown in the manual, secure them to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables.
