Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.

Blue Ox towing products and accessories are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do "fit work". The installation involves removal and reinstallation of the fascia, windshield washer fluid reservoir, and front grill, as well as drilling and trimming.
The following components must be removed and reinstalled: front fascia, front grill, windshield washer fluid reservoir top tube, and black bumper foam (which will not be reinstalled). The running lights must be unplugged. Bottom sensors must be unplugged and marked for proper reconnection. All removed items should be placed on a flat, sturdy surface.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill two 1-1/4" holes (one on each side of the vehicle) and multiple 13/32" holes to mount the baseplate to the frame. The manual states that some drilling and trimming is required as part of the installation process.
You must notch the plastic tabs on the windshield washer fluid reservoir using a utility knife, removing enough material to remove the bottom portion. The black bumper foam is removed by pulling it forward and will not be reinstalled. These are the only trimming operations specified in the manual.
The baseplate uses 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts, which should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds according to the bolt torque specifications table. The 6MM-1.0 Grade 8.8 bolt should be torqued to 31 foot-pounds. All bolts must be treated with Loctite Red before tightening and tightened according to the torque chart provided. Always use a torque wrench.
1. Drill the 1-1/4" holes on both sides and the 13/32" holes. 2. Insert the 3/8"-16 × 1-1/4" hex head bolts with 3/8" lock washers into the top two holes on each side and secure with 3/8"-16 nut plate weldments. 3. In the bottom rearward hole on each side, insert one 3/8"-16 × 1" hex head bolt with 3/8" lock washer and fasten with a 3/8"-16 whiz nut weldment. 4. Verify the baseplate is level before final tightening. 5. Apply Loctite Red to all bolts and tighten to 33 foot-pounds.
After drilling the holes and before final tightening, verify that the baseplate is level. The manual specifies this check in Step 14. Use a level tool to ensure the baseplate sits evenly on the vehicle frame before applying final torque to all bolts.
Remove the top large tube from the windshield washer fluid reservoir and notch the plastic tabs using a utility knife to remove the bottom portion. After the baseplate is installed and the holes are drilled, reinstall the windshield washer fluid reservoir using the 6MM hex head bolts supplied in the kit and reconnect the lines.
Use a flat screwdriver to remove the push pins. For the wheel well push pins (Step 4), rotate them clockwise until the slot is in the horizontal position, then lift out. For other push pins, simply pry them out with the flat screwdriver. There are 11 push pins on the top of the fascia (5 per side, 1 center), 6 on the fascia brackets, 3 on the front rim, and 2 in the wheel wells.
Remove the eight screws located on the underside of the vehicle using a Phillips screwdriver and unplug the running lights. After the baseplate is installed and the fascia is reinstalled, ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before fully reinstalling the fascia.
It is recommended to mark the sensor lines before unplugging them to ensure they are reconnected properly. After the baseplate installation is complete, reconnect the sensors to their original locations using the marks you made. Verify all electrical connections are plugged in and functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.

Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The principle function is to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame and baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. If additional options interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle.
Watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. If the baseplate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after the actual baseplate installation. Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. Verify the baseplate is level. Check that all bolts are tightened to the correct torque specifications using Loctite Red. Ensure the permanent baseplate safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting.
