Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. Required tools are: 9/16" wrench, 10MM wrench, utility knife, hack saw, 13/32" drill bit, drill, two C-clamps, and Loctite. You will also need a helper to hold the outside brace during installation.
The kit includes: one baseplate (61-5157), eight 3/8 x 1 1/4" Grade 5 hex bolts (201-0368), eight 3/8" lock washers (203-0010), four 3/8" hex nuts (202-0003), and four 3/8" nuts with wire (61-5217).
You must remove the bumper molding, turn signal assemblies, and the center plastic grille with the Toyota symbol. The turn signals are held by screws at the top. The center grille is held by four push pins on top and four molded snaps on the bottom. The bumper molding is held by multiple push pins and two 10MM bolts (one on each side) that attach to the quarter panels.
Remove each screw from the top of the turn signal assemblies. Once the screws are out, the turn signals can be pulled out from the vehicle.
Use a narrow screwdriver to push in the center of the four molded snaps on the bottom of the grille. There are also four push pins on the top. Once the snaps are released, pull out the grille.
Remove the three push pins from the top of the molding, the two push pins in the opening, and the remaining push pins from the bottom. Loosen the front of the fender well plastic. Reach in and remove the 10MM bolt that holds each quarter panel and the molding. The molding can then be removed.
You need to drill eight 13/32" holes to mount the baseplate to the bottom of the metal bumper, the front edges of the tie-down brackets, and the cross frame. You will also drill additional 3/8" holes for the upper braces to the cross frame. The exact number of 3/8" holes depends on the brace configuration.

1. Clamp the baseplate to the frame. 2. Drill the eight 13/32" holes using the baseplate as a template. 3. Insert a bolt, washer, and nut in each hole immediately after drilling. 4. Drill the 3/8" holes for the upper braces. 5. Install 3/8" bolts and washers in the upper braces. 6. Drill the 3/8" holes in the cross frame using the braces as templates. 7. Install 3/8" hardware to bolt the braces to the cross frame. 8. Tighten all bolts completely.
Yes. The installer must watch for electrical wires and hoses during installation. Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. If the baseplate is improperly installed against a wire or hose, it could cause electrical shorts or fluid leaks some time after installation.
Torque specifications are provided in the separate General Instruction Sheet that accompanies this manual. Consult that document for the correct torque values. Use Loctite Blue on all bolts to ensure they do not loosen during towing.
Yes. Use Loctite Blue on each bolt to ensure they do not loosen while the vehicle is being towed. Be sure to read the instructions on the Loctite bottle before applying.
Trim the lower grille opening on the outside lower edges where the attachment tabs protrude out. Remove the outside vertical plastic pieces completely. Notch the very bottom of the molding where the braces extend back to the cross frame. Hold the molding up to its original position and mark where it needs to be trimmed before cutting.
Dimensional variations between otherwise identical Siennas can be considerable. While the baseplate holes were designed to allow for easy installation, it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to achieve proper alignment.
Install the tow bar and safety cables according to the instructions included in their packages. Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating; the combined rating of two cables is what matters, not the individual ratings.
No. Permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables that attach the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. Both types of cables are necessary.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications.
The installation instructions specify using Loctite Blue during installation. However, the General Information section states to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to recommended specifications. Consult the separate General Instruction Sheet for complete torque and Loctite specifications for maintenance and retightening.
