The CURT universal tow bar offers a convenient way to bring an extra vehicle along on your RV getaways. The universal tow bar latches onto your vehicle's bumper or frame using a pair of bumper brackets and then couples to a ball mount on your RV trailer hitch. The vehicle can then be towed behind your RV, allowing you more freedom and mobility once you reach your destination. When towing a vehicle behind your RV, it is essential to have working towing lights just like if you were towing a trailer. CURT magnetic towing lights easily stick to your vehicle and connect to your RV to provide that added measure of safety. There is nothing like camping in an RV. The home-away-from-home comfort, mixed with the freedom to explore the outdoors, makes it an experience unlike any other. The maximum gross weight is 5,000 lbs. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower. Always consult your vehicle owner's manual for towing limits and ensure your towing vehicle is of adequate size to properly control the towed vehicle.
The tow bar is designed for light- and medium-duty towing of four-wheeled motor vehicles and connects to a 2" ball on the towing vehicle. The manual does not specify vehicle-specific compatibility. You must locate rigid mounting points on the towed vehicle's frame to attach the clevis mounts. A structure may need to be fabricated to allow the tow bar to be attached to the frame of the towed vehicle. Contact Curt Manufacturing or consult a fitment database for your specific vehicle.
The recommended clevis mount spacing is 26" to 41" between centers, with 33" preferred. The clevis mounts should be spaced equally from the centerline of the vehicle and secured to a flat, nearly vertical area of the bumper.
The kit includes: 2 safety pins (1/2"), 2 hex head cap screws (1/2" - 13 x 3 1/2", grade 5), 4 hex head cap screws (1/2" - 13 x 1 3/4", grade 5), 4 hex nuts (3/8" - 16, center lock, grade 5), 2 hex nuts (1/2" - 13, top lock flange, grade 5), 4 hex nuts (1/2" - 13, center lock, grade 5), 4 flat washers (1/2"), and 4 conical washers (3/8").
The manual specifies that you will need a drill to create 1/2" holes in the attachment surface. A torque wrench is required to properly tighten fasteners to specification (75 ft-lbs for 1/2" fasteners and 31 ft-lbs for 3/8" fasteners). The manual does not list other specific tools required.
No. Safety chains and wiring for stop, turn, tail and marker lights are sold separately. Individual safety chains must have a break strength equal to or exceeding the gross weight of the towed vehicle.
No. The coupler latch must be secured with either a clip or a coupler lock, which are sold separately.
You must locate rigid mounting points on the towed vehicle's frame to attach the clevis mounts. The clevis mounts should be secured to a flat, nearly vertical area of the bumper. A structure may need to be fabricated to allow the tow bar to be attached to the frame of the towed vehicle. The installer or owner is responsible for identifying these mounting points.
1. Mark both centers of the clevis mounts on the attachment surface at the desired width (recommended spacing 26" to 41", with 33" preferred). 2. Using the clevis mount as a template, drill two 1/2" holes into the attachment surface on both sides. 3. Secure the clevis mount to the attachment surface with 1/2" - 13 x 1 3/4" hex head cap screws, 1/2" flat washers, and 1/2" - 13 center lock hex nuts. Torque all 1/2" fasteners to 75 ft-lbs.
Attach the tow bar assemblies to the previously installed clevis mounts using 1/2" safety pins. The tow bar arms are held in place by these pins and can swing freely.
1. Loosely secure the coupler assembly to the tow bar arms using the bolt plate weldments, 3/8" conical washers, and 3/8" - 16 center lock hex nuts. 2. Center the coupler assembly with the towed vehicle. 3. Torque the 3/8" fasteners to 31 ft-lbs. 4. Attach the tow bar coupler to the 2" ball of the towing vehicle, ensuring the coupler is straight and the height difference between the ball and the clevis mount does not exceed 6".
Secure connector weldments to tow bar arms with 1/2" - 13 x 3 1/2" hex head cap screws and 1/2" - 13 top lock flange hex nuts. Tighten the 1/2" hardware until contact is made with both sides of the tow bar arms. The tow bar arms must swing freely; back off hardware slightly if necessary to ensure free movement.
Yes. You must drill two 1/2" holes into the attachment surface of the towed vehicle for each clevis mount. The clevis mount is used as a template to mark and drill these holes.
All 1/2" fasteners (the hex head cap screws and center lock hex nuts securing the clevis mounts) must be torqued to 75 ft-lbs.
The 3/8" fasteners (conical washers and center lock hex nuts securing the coupler assembly to the tow bar arms) must be torqued to 31 ft-lbs.
The height difference between the ball and the clevis mount must not exceed 6". If the height difference is greater than 6", adjust the ball height to make the tow bar level.
Before every towing use, you must: 1. Adjust the coupler to fit the trailer ball by turning the nut under the coupler. The coupler latch must engage the coupler and the coupler must not be loose on the ball. 2. Secure the coupler latch with either a clip or a coupler lock. 3. Attach two safety chains between the vehicles (individual safety chains must have a break strength equal to or exceeding the gross weight of the towed vehicle). 4. Connect the appropriate wiring for stop, turn, tail and marker lights. 5. Ensure all towing accessories and attachment points are secure and in proper working order.
Follow these precautions: 1. Only tow a vehicle and tow with a vehicle in good condition. 2. Check for proper clearance between vehicles in a turning situation. 3. Unlock the steering wheel on the towed vehicle to allow the front wheels to track. 4. Set the transmission for towing according to the towed vehicle's owner's manual. 5. Avoid sharp turns and rough terrain. 6. Check all attachments after each use and periodically on a long trip. 7. Do not back up while the vehicle is attached; damage to both vehicles and the towing system may occur. 8. Ensure your towing vehicle is of adequate size to properly control the towed vehicle. Stopping distances will increase; adjust your driving accordingly. 9. Never exceed the lowest rating of any part of the towing system.
After installation, periodically check that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. Prior to towing, verify that all towing accessories and attachment points are secure and in proper working order.

The tow bar is designed for four-wheeled motor vehicles with a 2" ball coupler and rigid frame mounting points. Vehicle-specific compatibility is not listed in the manual. Contact Curt Manufacturing or consult a fitment database for your vehicle.
Safety chains, wiring for lights, and a coupler lock or clip are sold separately and required for operation.
Yes. You must drill two 1/2" holes into the towed vehicle's attachment surface for each clevis mount.
1/2" fasteners: 75 ft-lbs. 3/8" fasteners: 31 ft-lbs.
Maximum gross weight is 5,000 lbs, but you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
Secure the coupler with a lock or clip, attach safety chains, connect wiring, verify all attachments are secure, and ensure the height difference between the ball and clevis mount does not exceed 6".
Back off the 1/2" - 13 x 3 1/2" hex head cap screws and top lock flange hex nuts securing the connector weldments to the tow bar arms slightly. The hardware should be tightened only until contact is made with both sides of the tow bar arms, but not so tight that it prevents free movement.
Adjust the coupler to fit the trailer ball by turning the nut under the coupler. The coupler latch must engage the coupler and the coupler must not be loose on the ball. Refer to Figure 4 in the manual for the coupler adjustment nut location.
Adjust the ball height on the towing vehicle to make the tow bar level. The height difference between the ball and the clevis mount must not exceed 6". If your towing vehicle's ball height cannot be adjusted sufficiently, you may need a different hitch setup.
