The Curt Helux Pin Box is a replacement pin box assembly for 5th wheel trailers. It replaces the existing pin box on your trailer and connects the kingpin to your tow vehicle's 5th wheel hitch. The pin box is available in seven different weight ratings to match your specific trailer's pin weight, ranging from 1880 lb to 6000 lb loaded capacity.
You must determine your trailer's pin weight before purchasing. The best method is to take your fully loaded 5th wheel (including all cargo, ATVs, motorcycles, etc.) to a certified scale such as a CAT Scale. Follow the weighing procedure: connect the trailer to the tow vehicle and weigh all three axle groups, then weigh just the tow vehicle alone, and subtract the tow vehicle weight from the combined weight. Alternatively, multiply your 5th wheel's GVWR by 22% (0.22) for an approximate pin weight. Match your pin weight to the chart: 1880–2377 lb uses part 2024044568; 2378–2722 lb uses 2024044567; 2723–3165 lb uses 2024044569; 3166–3712 lb uses 2024122233; 3713–4332 lb uses 2024044570; 4333–4900 lb uses 2024044571; 4901–6000 lb uses 2024044572.
You can approximate pin weight by multiplying your 5th wheel's GVWR by 22% (0.22), but the manual states that depending on actual trailer weight and load distribution, the approximate weight could vary from actual weight. For best results, getting the actual weight at a certified scale is preferred. This is important because choosing the wrong pin box rating could affect safety and hitch performance.
The kit includes one pin box assembly, ten hex bolts (5/8"-11 x 1 3/4", grade 5), and ten serrated-flange nuts (5/8"-11, grade 5). The manual specifies that you must use this new hardware and not reuse the mounting hardware from the previous pin box.
Required tools are: SAE socket set, SAE wrenches, tape measure, box-end wrench set, safety glasses, air compressor, and level. The manual notes that proper tools will improve the quality of installation and reduce the time required.
A minimum of two people are required to help support the weight of the pin box as it is being lifted. The pin box assembly weighs several hundred pounds. A forklift may be used to lift the pin box into position as an alternative.
The pin box must be installed at a specific height to ensure proper kingpin engagement. First, level the trailer front-to-back and measure from the ground to the bottom of the kingpin plate on the current pin box (record as dimension A). Then, position the new pin box so that the distance from the ground to the flat plate of the upper jaw equals dimension A plus 9½ inches. This ensures the kingpin will properly engage within the hitch jaw.
No. The manual explicitly states that you must not reuse the mounting hardware from the previous pin box. You must use the new hardware included in the kit: ten hex bolts (5/8"-11 x 1 3/4", grade 5) and ten serrated-flange nuts (5/8"-11, grade 5).
Torque the 5/8" bolts to 120 ft-lb ± 5 lb. This torque specification must be followed to ensure the pin box is properly secured and to prevent damage to the product or vehicle.
Use an equal number of fasteners as were previously used to secure the old pin box. The kit includes ten hex bolts and ten serrated-flange nuts, but you should match the number of mounting points on your specific trailer.
Before hitching, adjust the trailer height using the landing gear so that the bottom of the trailer's pin box is 1/2" to 1" below the hitch skid plate. This ensures the kingpin will properly slide into the receiver and rest completely inside the jaw. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the kingpin being too high and coming to rest on top of closed jaws or not completely inside the jaw, which could cause the trailer to separate from the hitch.
No. Do not attempt to hitch the trailer by using trailer jacks to lower the trailer and kingpin. This could result in the kingpin coming to rest on top of the skid plate instead of within the hitch opening, which may result in death or serious injury. Always use the trailer landing gear per the manufacturer's recommendation.
The pull test verifies that the trailer is properly hitched before traveling. After hitching, secure the trailer with wheel chocks, apply the trailer brakes, and slowly pull the trailer forward with the tow vehicle. If properly hitched, the wheel blocks and trailer brakes should keep the truck from moving forward. If the trailer separates from the hitch, the truck will move forward while the trailer remains behind. The manual states that failure to perform a pull test may result in severe property damage, serious personal injury, or death.
Securely chock the trailer tires by placing chocks firmly against the front and rear of each trailer tire to prevent movement either forward or backward. The trailer landing gear should be firmly on the ground to support the trailer. The tow vehicle must be in park with the emergency brake engaged. The manual warns that failure to secure the tow vehicle and trailer from movement during the procedure could result in severe property damage, serious personal injury, or death.
After successfully performing the pull test, fully raise the landing gear per the manufacturer's recommendations. Then check and inspect all electrical circuits for proper operation, including clearance lights, turn signals, and stop lights. Finally, remove and store all trailer wheel blocks.
If necessary, lower the tow vehicle's tailgate to allow the pin box to clear during the hitching maneuver. However, the clearance of the lowered tailgate to the trailer needs to be monitored during hookups, since some combinations of truck and trailer have little or no clearance. This prevents damage to both the tailgate and trailer during the hitching process.
The 5th wheel should always be towed while level. Adjustment of the pin box mounting height, the tow vehicle height, or suspension may be necessary to accomplish a level towing condition. Before traveling, be sure the trailer pulls in a level condition.
Always check the pin box and its components for damage or any loose nuts and bolts. Be sure the trailer pulls in a level condition before traveling. For additional service information, replaceable parts, and troubleshooting, scan the QR code provided in the manual.
If the trailer is not level, adjust the pin box or hitch accordingly. The 5th wheel should always be towed while level, and adjustment of the pin box mounting height, the tow vehicle height, or suspension may be necessary to accomplish a level towing condition.
Excessive chucking in the tow vehicle may be caused by a damaged coil spring in the pin box or unbalanced cargo. Inspect the pin box coil spring for condition and any possible damage. Be sure cargo is balanced from side to side and front to back.
Excessive noise from the pin box area can have several causes. First, verify that the pin box is securely attached to the 5th wheel. If the kingpin is excessively worn, the jaw plate will need to be replaced. Check the condition of the coil spring and replace if damaged or broken. Look for damage on the shock or a disconnected shock, and reconnect or replace if needed. Hitch mechanisms can also cause noise, so verify that unwanted noise is not coming from the hitch itself. The hitch manufacturer can provide guidelines for this check.
If the pin box appears too far open (hitch plate tilted toward the cab of the truck) when the trailer is unloaded, this is normal. Observe the pin box and hitch plate once the trailer is loaded. The pin box will close down as the unit is loaded to the proper pin weight.
The installation difficulty level is rated as Moderate. Installation difficulty levels are based on time and effort involved and may vary depending on the installer's level of expertise, condition of the vehicle, and proper tools and equipment.

No. Returns will not be accepted once the product has been installed. This is why purchase verification and confirming the correct part number for your trailer's pin weight is critical before ordering.
Safety glasses should be worn at all times while installing this product. Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. An unsupported pin box during product removal can result in death, serious personal injury, severe product and/or property damage, so properly support the pin box throughout installation. The pin box assembly weighs several hundred pounds and requires a minimum of two people to support it during lifting.
The Helux Pin Box fits any 5th wheel trailer, but you must choose the correct part number based on your trailer's pin weight. Weigh your fully loaded trailer at a certified scale or multiply your GVWR by 22% to find your pin weight, then match it to the seven available ratings (1880–6000 lb loaded).
The kit includes ten hex bolts (5/8"-11 x 1 3/4") and ten serrated-flange nuts (5/8"-11). You do not reuse old hardware. You will need standard SAE tools (sockets, wrenches, box-end wrench set), a tape measure, level, safety glasses, and an air compressor.
