The Curt Helux Pin Box is a replacement pin box assembly for 5th wheel trailers. It connects the trailer's kingpin to the tow vehicle's 5th wheel hitch receiver. The pin box contains a spring mechanism that supports the weight of the trailer and allows for articulation during towing. Curt offers seven different models (part numbers 2024044568 through 2024044572) rated for pin weights ranging from 1880 lb to 6000 lb (loaded).
You must determine your trailer's actual pin weight before purchasing. The best method is to take your fully loaded 5th wheel (including all cargo, ATVs, motorcycles, etc.) to a certified scale such as CAT Scale. Follow the weighing procedure: connect the 5th wheel to the tow vehicle and weigh the front and rear axles of the truck (scales 1 and 2) and trailer axles (scale 3). Subtract the tow vehicle weight from the combined weight to find pin weight. Alternatively, multiply your trailer's GVWR by 22% (0.22) for an approximate pin weight. Match your pin weight to the chart: part 2024044568 (1880–2377 lb), 2024044567 (2378–2722 lb), 2024044569 (2723–3165 lb), 2024122233 (3166–3712 lb), 2024044570 (3713–4332 lb), 2024044571 (4333–4900 lb), or 2024044572 (4901–6000 lb).
No. Each Curt Helux Pin Box model is designed for a specific pin weight range. The model you choose must match your calculated or measured pin weight. Using an undersized model risks inadequate support; using an oversized model may result in improper hitch geometry. Always select the model whose pin weight range includes your actual pin weight.
The minimum pin weight is the unloaded weight (no cargo and empty fresh, black, and gray water tanks). The maximum pin weight is the loaded weight (cargo loaded including toy hauler area and tanks travel-ready). The optimal pin weight value range shown in the middle column is the target range when choosing your Curt Helux Pin Box model. Your actual loaded pin weight should fall within this range for proper performance.
You will need: SAE socket set, SAE wrenches, tape measure, box-end wrench set, safety glasses, air compressor, and level. Proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
The kit includes 10 hex bolts (5/8"-11 x 1 3/4", grade 5) and 10 serrated-flange nuts (5/8"-11, grade 5). These are new mounting fasteners and must be used instead of the old hardware from the previous pin box.
A minimum of two people are required to help support the weight of the pin box as it is being lifted and positioned. The pin box assembly weighs several hundred pounds. A forklift may be used to lift the pin box into position as an alternative.
The manual does not mention disconnecting the battery. This is a mechanical installation with no electrical work required.
Level the trailer front-to-back and measure from the ground to the bottom of the kingpin plate on the current pin box. Record this measurement as dimension A. This dimension will be used to install the new pin box at the proper height.
Properly support the pin box before removing mounting bolts. An unsupported pin box during removal can result in death, serious personal injury, or severe product and property damage. Once the pin box is properly supported, remove the fasteners securing it and carefully lower it to the ground.

After the pin box is secured with the supplied hardware and bolts are torqued to 120 ft-lb±5 lb, proceed to the hitching and pull test procedure. First, adjust the trailer height using the landing gear so the bottom of the trailer's pin box is 1/2" to 1" below the hitch skid plate. Then perform the hitching procedure and pull test to verify proper installation.
Using the trailer landing gear, adjust the trailer height per the manufacturer's recommendation so the bottom of the trailer's pin box is 1/2" to 1" below the hitch skid plate. This ensures the kingpin will be properly positioned inside the hitch jaw and not rest on top of the closed jaws or skid plate.
If the kingpin is too high, it may come to rest on top of the closed jaws or not completely inside the jaw. This could result in the trailer separating from the hitch, which may result in death or serious injury. Proper height adjustment ensures the kingpin seats correctly inside the hitch receiver.
No. Do not attempt to hitch the trailer by using trailer jacks to lower the trailer and kingpin. This could result in the kingpin coming to rest on top of the skid plate instead of within the hitch opening, which may result in death or serious injury. Always use the landing gear per the manufacturer's recommendation.
Place chocks firmly against the front and rear of each trailer tire to prevent movement, either forward or backward. If necessary, lower the tow vehicle's tailgate to allow the pin box to clear. Monitor the clearance of the lowered tailgate to the trailer during hookups, as some combinations of truck and trailer have little or no clearance.
Back the truck slowly toward the trailer until the truck's hitch contacts the bottom of the pin box and the kingpin slides into the receiver. During the hitching maneuver, the bottom of the trailer's pin box should come into contact with the hitch skid plate ramp. Then latch the 5th wheel hitch in closed position per the instructions of the 5th wheel hitch manufacturer. Consult your hitch manufacturer's owner's manual for proper hitching procedure.
The pull test verifies that the trailer is properly hitched before traveling. Securely chock the trailer tires and ensure the landing gear is firmly on the ground. From the tow vehicle cab, release the emergency brake and apply the trailer brakes. Slowly pull the trailer forward. If properly hitched, the wheel blocks and trailer brakes should keep the truck from moving forward. If the trailer is not properly hitched, it will separate from the hitch and the truck will move forward while leaving the trailer behind. Failure to perform a pull test may result in severe property damage, serious personal injury, or death.
If the trailer separates from the tow vehicle during the pull test, the trailer is not properly hitched. Repeat the hitching procedure from the beginning, ensuring the pin box height is correct and the kingpin is fully seated in the hitch receiver.
After successfully performing the pull test, fully raise the landing gear per the manufacturer's recommendations. Then check and inspect all electrical circuits for proper operation, including clearance lights, turn signals, and stop lights. Finally, remove and store all trailer wheel blocks.
