The Curt Helux Pin Box is a replacement pin box assembly for 5th wheel trailers. It connects the trailer's kingpin to the tow vehicle's 5th wheel hitch receiver. The pin box contains a spring-loaded jaw mechanism that securely holds the kingpin during towing. Different models are available to match your trailer's pin weight, which is the downward force the trailer exerts on the hitch.
You must determine your trailer's pin weight before purchasing. The best method is to take your fully loaded 5th wheel (including all cargo, ATVs, motorcycles, etc.) to a certified scale like CAT Scale. Follow the weighing procedure: connect the trailer to the tow vehicle and weigh all three axle groups, then weigh just the tow vehicle alone, and subtract the tow vehicle weight from the combined weight. Alternatively, multiply your 5th wheel's GVWR by 22% (0.22) for an approximate pin weight. Match your pin weight to the capacity chart: part 2024044568 (1880–2377 lb), 2024044567 (2378–2722 lb), 2024044569 (2723–3165 lb), 2024122233 (3166–3712 lb), 2024044570 (3713–4332 lb), 2024044571 (4333–4900 lb), or 2024044572 (4901–6000 lb).
The minimum pin weight is the unloaded weight with no cargo and empty fresh, black, and gray water tanks. The maximum pin weight is the loaded weight with cargo loaded including the toy hauler area and tanks filled for travel. You should select a pin box model where your actual loaded pin weight falls within the optimal range shown in the capacity chart. For example, part 2024122233 is optimal for 3166–3712 lb loaded pin weight, with a minimum rating of 2120 lb and maximum of 4000 lb.
You will need: SAE socket set, SAE wrenches, tape measure, box-end wrench set, safety glasses, air compressor, and level. Proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
The kit includes 10 hex bolts (5/8"-11 x 1 3/4", grade 5) and 10 serrated-flange nuts (5/8"-11, grade 5). These are new fasteners and must be used for installation; do not reuse the mounting hardware from the previous pin box.
A minimum of two people are required to help support the weight of the pin box as it is being lifted and positioned. The pin box assembly weighs several hundred pounds. A forklift may be used to lift the pin box into position as an alternative.
The installation difficulty is rated as Moderate. The difficulty level is based on time and effort involved and may vary depending on the installer's level of expertise, the condition of the vehicle, and availability of proper tools and equipment.
Level the trailer front-to-back and measure from the ground to the bottom of the kingpin plate on the current pin box. Record this measurement as dimension A. This dimension will be used to install the new pin box at the proper height.
Properly support the pin box before removing mounting bolts. An unsupported pin box during removal can result in death, serious personal injury, or severe product and property damage. Once the pin box is properly supported, remove the fasteners securing the old pin box and carefully lower it to the ground.
Lift the new pin box and support it while positioning it at the appropriate height. Measure from the ground up to the flat plate of the upper jaw on the Helux pin box. Adjust the pin box height until it equals dimension A (recorded in step 1) plus 9-1/2 inches. Once positioned correctly, secure it with the supplied hardware kit using an equal number of fasteners as were previously used.
Torque 5/8" bolts to 120 ft-lb±5 lb. This torque specification must be followed to ensure proper fastener security and prevent damage to the product or vehicle.
The Helux pin box kit includes new mounting hardware. Do not reuse the mounting hardware from the previous pin box. Using new hardware ensures proper fastener integrity and secure attachment of the pin box to the trailer.
Place chocks firmly against the front and rear of each trailer tire to prevent movement forward or backward. If necessary, lower the tow vehicle's tailgate to allow the pin box to clear. Note that the clearance between the lowered tailgate and the trailer needs to be monitored during hookups, as some truck and trailer combinations have little or no clearance.
Using the trailer landing gear, adjust trailer height per the manufacturer's recommendation so the bottom of the trailer's pin box is 1/2" to 1" below the hitch skid plate. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the kingpin being too high and coming to rest on top of closed jaws or not completely inside the jaw, which could result in trailer separation and serious injury or death.
Back the truck slowly toward the trailer until the truck's hitch contacts the bottom of the pin box and the kingpin slides into the receiver. During the hitching maneuver, the bottom of the trailer's pin box should come into contact with the hitch skid plate ramp. After the kingpin is seated, latch the 5th wheel hitch in closed position per the instructions of the 5th wheel hitch manufacturer.
The pull test verifies that the trailer is properly hitched before traveling. Secure the tow vehicle and trailer against movement: chock the trailer tires, ensure the landing gear is firmly on the ground, and place the tow vehicle in park with the emergency brake engaged. Release the emergency brake, apply the trailer brakes, and slowly pull the trailer forward. If properly hitched, the wheel blocks and trailer brakes should keep the truck from moving forward. If the trailer separates from the hitch, the truck will move forward while leaving the trailer behind. Failure to perform a pull test may result in severe property damage, serious personal injury, or death.
After successfully performing the pull test, fully raise the landing gear per manufacturer's recommendations. Check and inspect all electrical circuits for proper operation, including clearance lights, turn signals, and stop lights. Remove and store all trailer wheel blocks. Before traveling, ensure the trailer pulls in a level condition.
Always check the pin box and its components for damage or any loose nuts and bolts. Be sure the trailer pulls in a level condition before traveling. Refer to the Service Manual for replaceable parts and additional troubleshooting information (accessible via QR code on page 5).
If the trailer is not level, adjust the pin box or hitch accordingly. The 5th wheel should always be towed while level. Adjustment of the pin box mounting height, the tow vehicle height, or suspension may be necessary to accomplish a level towing condition.
Excessive chucking in the tow vehicle may be caused by a damaged coil spring in the pin box or unbalanced cargo. Inspect the pin box coil spring for condition and any possible damage. Be sure cargo is balanced from side to side and front to back.
Excessive noise from the pin box area may have several causes. First, verify that the pin box is securely attached to the 5th wheel. If the kingpin is excessively worn, the jaw plate will need to be replaced. Check the condition of the coil spring and replace if damaged or broken. Look for damage on the shock or a disconnected shock; reconnect or replace if needed. Hitch mechanisms can also cause noise, so verify that unwanted noise is not coming from the hitch itself. The hitch manufacturer can provide guidelines for this check.
If the hitch plate is tilted toward the cab of the truck when the trailer is unloaded, this is normal. Observe the pin box and hitch plate once the trailer is loaded. The pin box will close down as the unit is loaded to the proper pin weight.
Do not attempt to hitch the trailer by using trailer jacks to lower the trailer and kingpin. This could result in the kingpin coming to rest on top of the skid plate instead of within the hitch opening, which may result in death or serious injury. Always use the trailer landing gear per the manufacturer's recommendation to adjust trailer height.
Safety glasses should be worn at all times while installing this product. Additionally, never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. An unsupported pin box during product removal can result in death, serious personal injury, or severe product and property damage. Properly support the pin box throughout the entire installation process.
