The Curt Helux Pin Box is a replacement pin box assembly for 5th wheel trailers. It connects the trailer's kingpin to the tow vehicle's 5th wheel hitch receiver. The pin box contains a spring mechanism that supports the trailer's weight and allows for articulation during towing. Different models are rated for different pin weights, ranging from 1880 lb to 6000 lb when fully loaded.
You must determine your 5th wheel's actual pin weight before purchasing. The best method is to take your fully loaded 5th wheel (including all cargo, ATVs, motorcycles, etc.) to a certified scale such as CAT Scale. Weigh the tow vehicle and trailer together, then weigh the tow vehicle alone, and subtract to find the pin weight. Alternatively, multiply your 5th wheel's GVWR by 22% (0.22) for an approximate pin weight. Match your pin weight to the chart on page 1: part numbers range from 2024044568 (1880–2377 lb) to 2024044572 (4901–6000 lb). The manual notes that actual weight may vary from the approximation, so actual weighing is preferred.
Part number 2024044571 is rated for a pin weight of 4333–4900 lb when loaded. The minimum pin weight (unloaded, with empty tanks) is 2860 lb, and the maximum pin weight (fully loaded) is 5400 lb.
You will need: SAE socket set, SAE wrenches, tape measure, box-end wrench set, safety glasses, air compressor, and level. The manual notes that proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce time required.

If properly hitched, the wheel blocks and trailer brakes should keep the truck from moving forward. If the trailer is not properly hitched, it will separate from the hitch. The manual warns that failure to perform a pull test may result in severe property damage, serious personal injury, or death.
Before the pull test, securely chock the trailer tires (place chocks firmly against the front and rear of each trailer tire to prevent forward or backward movement). The trailer landing gear should be firmly on the ground to support the trailer. The tow vehicle must be in park with the emergency brake engaged. First, verify that the pin box is securely attached to the 5th wheel by checking all nuts and bolts. If the kingpin is excessively worn, the jaw plate will need to be replaced. Check the condition of the coil spring and replace if damaged or broken. Look for damage to the shock absorber or a disconnected shock, and reconnect or replace if needed. Also verify that the noise is not coming from the hitch itself by consulting the hitch manufacturer's guidelines.
This is normal behavior. Observe the pin box and hitch plate once the trailer is loaded. The pin box will close down as the unit is loaded to the proper pin weight. This is the spring mechanism functioning as designed.
If the trailer separates from the tow vehicle during the pull test, the trailer is not properly hitched. Repeat the hitching procedure from the beginning. Ensure that the pin box height is correct (bottom of pin box 1/2" to 1" below the hitch skid plate), that the kingpin slides fully into the receiver, and that the 5th wheel hitch is latched in the closed position per the hitch manufacturer's instructions.
