The Curt Helux Pin Box is a replacement pin box assembly for 5th wheel trailers. It connects the trailer's kingpin to the tow vehicle's 5th wheel hitch receiver. The product is available in seven different models (part numbers 2024044568 through 2024044572), each rated for different pin weight capacities ranging from 1880 lb to 6000 lb loaded.
You must determine your 5th wheel's pin weight before purchasing. The best method is to take your fully loaded 5th wheel (including all cargo, toys, and water tanks) to a certified scale such as a CAT Scale. Weigh the tow vehicle and trailer together, then weigh the tow vehicle alone, and subtract to find the pin weight. Match this weight to the appropriate model: 2024044568 (1880–2377 lb), 2024044567 (2378–2722 lb), 2024044569 (2723–3165 lb), 2024122233 (3166–3712 lb), 2024044570 (3713–4332 lb), 2024044571 (4333–4900 lb), or 2024044572 (4901–6000 lb). Alternatively, multiply your 5th wheel's GVWR by 22% (0.22) for an approximate pin weight, though actual weighing is preferred.

You will need: SAE socket set, SAE wrenches, tape measure, box-end wrench set, safety glasses, air compressor, and level. Proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
The kit includes: one pin box assembly, ten hex bolts (5/8"-11 x 1 3/4", grade 5), and ten serrated-flange nuts (5/8"-11, grade 5). Do not reuse the mounting hardware from the previous pin box; use only the new hardware supplied in the kit.
A minimum of two people are required to help support the weight of the pin box as it is being lifted and positioned. The pin box assembly weighs several hundred pounds. A forklift may be used to lift the pin box into position as an alternative.
The installation difficulty is rated as Moderate. The difficulty level is based on time and effort involved and may vary depending on the installer's level of expertise, the condition of the vehicle, and availability of proper tools and equipment.
Level the trailer front-to-back and measure from the ground to the bottom of the kingpin plate on the current pin box. Record this measurement as dimension A. This dimension will be used to install the new pin box at the proper height.
Properly support the pin box before removing mounting bolts. An unsupported pin box during removal can result in death, serious personal injury, or severe product and property damage. Once the pin box is properly supported, remove the fasteners securing the old pin box and carefully lower it to the ground.
Lift the new pin box and support it while positioning it at the appropriate height. Measure from the ground up to the flat plate of the upper jaw on the Helux pin box. Adjust the pin box height until it equals dimension A (recorded in Step 1) plus 9-1/2". Once positioned correctly, secure it with the supplied hardware kit using an equal number of fasteners as were previously used.
Torque the 5/8" bolts to 120 ft-lb±5 lb. This torque specification must be followed to ensure proper fastening and prevent damage to the product or vehicle.
Using the trailer landing gear, adjust the trailer height per the manufacturer's recommendation so the bottom of the trailer's pin box is 1/2" to 1" below the hitch skid plate. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the kingpin being too high and coming to rest on top of closed jaws or not completely inside the jaw, which could result in trailer separation and serious injury or death.
Place chocks firmly against the front and rear of each trailer tire to prevent movement forward or backward. If necessary, lower the tow vehicle's tailgate to allow the pin box to clear. Monitor the clearance of the lowered tailgate to the trailer during hookups, as some truck and trailer combinations have little or no clearance.
Back the truck slowly toward the trailer until the truck's hitch contacts the bottom of the pin box and the kingpin slides into the receiver. During the hitching maneuver, the bottom of the trailer's pin box should come into contact with the hitch skid plate ramp. Once the kingpin is seated, latch the 5th wheel hitch in closed position per the instructions of the 5th wheel hitch manufacturer. Consult your hitch manufacturer's owner's manual for proper hitching procedure.
A pull test verifies that the trailer is properly hitched before traveling. After hitching, securely chock the trailer tires and ensure the landing gear is firmly on the ground and the tow vehicle is in park with the emergency brake engaged. Release the emergency brake, apply the trailer brakes, and slowly pull the trailer forward. If properly hitched, the wheel blocks and trailer brakes should keep the truck from moving forward. If the trailer separates from the hitch, the truck will move forward while leaving the trailer behind. Failure to perform a pull test may result in severe property damage, serious personal injury, or death.
After successfully performing the pull test, fully raise the landing gear per the manufacturer's recommendations. Check and inspect all electrical circuits for proper operation, including clearance lights, turn signals, and stop lights. Remove and store all trailer wheel blocks.
Always check the pin box and its components for damage or any loose nuts and bolts. Be sure the trailer pulls in a level condition before traveling. Periodically inspect the pin box coil spring for condition and any possible damage. If the kingpin is excessively worn, the jaw plate will need to be replaced. Check the condition of the shock absorber and replace if damaged or broken.
Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Additionally, an unsupported pin box during product removal can result in death, serious personal injury, or severe product and property damage. Properly support the pin box throughout the entire installation process.

Do not attempt to hitch the trailer by using trailer jacks to lower the trailer and kingpin. This could result in the kingpin coming to rest on top of the skid plate instead of within the hitch opening, which may result in death or serious injury. Always use the trailer landing gear per the manufacturer's recommendation to adjust trailer height.

Check the condition of the coil spring and replace if damaged or broken. Look for damage on the shock absorber or a disconnected shock; reconnect or replace if needed. Also verify that unwanted noise is not coming from the hitch itself; the hitch manufacturer can provide guidelines for this check.
This is normal behavior. Observe the pin box and hitch plate once the trailer is loaded. The pin box will close down as the unit is loaded to the proper pin weight.
