The CURT Helux Gooseneck Pin Box is a coupling device that connects a 5th wheel trailer to a tow vehicle via a 2 5/16" hitch ball. It features an upper jaw that latches onto the ball and a lower jaw that mounts to the 5th wheel's upper deck. The product is available in six different pin weight ratings to match the weight of your specific 5th wheel trailer.
You must determine your 5th wheel's pin weight before purchasing. The best method is to weigh your fully loaded 5th wheel (including all cargo, ATVs, and water tanks) at a certified scale such as CAT Scale. Subtract the tow vehicle's weight from the combined weight to find the pin weight. Alternatively, multiply your 5th wheel's GVWR by 22% (0.22) for an approximate pin weight. Match your pin weight to the correct model: 2024044575 (1650–2144 lb), 2024044574 (2145–2484 lb), 2024044576 (2485–2984 lb), 2024044577 (2985–3469 lb), 2024044578 (3470–3964 lb), or 2024044579 (3965–5000 lb).
No. The manual specifies "Use 2 5/16" Ball only." Using any other ball size will not work with this gooseneck coupler.
A minimum clearance of 7 inches must be maintained between the truck bed rails and the underside of the front of the 5th wheel. This clearance is critical to avoid contact while hitching and turning. The gooseneck mounting height should be adjusted using the trailer bracket holes to ensure this clearance is achieved while maintaining a level towing condition.
Required tools include: SAE socket set, SAE wrenches, box-end wrench set, tape measure, safety glasses, air compressor, and level. Proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
The kit includes: 1 gooseneck assembly, 10 hex bolts (5/8"-11 x 1 3/4", grade 5), 10 serrated-flange nuts (5/8"-11, grade 5), 2 safety chains, and 1 cable release. Do not reuse mounting hardware from the previous pin box; use only the new hardware supplied with this kit.
A minimum of two people are required to install this product. The pin box assembly weighs 170 pounds, and two or three people are needed to help support the weight as it is being lifted and positioned. A forklift may be used as an alternative to lift the gooseneck into position.
Before installing the new gooseneck, level the RV front-to-back using the landing gear. Properly support the old pin box before removing its mounting bolts. Carefully lower the old pin box from the mounting bracket and move it from the area. Do not reuse the old mounting hardware; the kit includes new fasteners.
The manual does not list the Breakaway Switch Kit in the parts list, suggesting it may not be included. If a Breakaway Switch Kit is installed on your previous pin box, you must uninstall it and install it per the manufacturer's recommendations on the new gooseneck or RV mounting bracket.
1. Level the RV front-to-back using landing gear. 2. Remove and support the old pin box. 3. Back the tow vehicle away from the 5th wheel. 4. Lift and position the new gooseneck at a height that ensures level towing and 7 inches minimum clearance between truck bed and 5th wheel. 5. Install five hex bolts and flange nuts on each side (three forward, two rearward). 6. Torque all mounting bolts to 120 ft-lb±5 ft-lb. 7. Install or relocate the Breakaway Switch Kit per manufacturer instructions.
The gooseneck must be positioned to achieve two critical conditions: a level towing setup and a minimum 7-inch clearance between the truck bed and the 5th wheel's front underside. The distance from the bottom of the hitch ball to the center of the first mounting hole is 15½". Each set of holes above the first hole is graduated in 2-inch increments, with the top mounting hole at 21½" from the ball center. Use these measurements and the trailer bracket holes to adjust the gooseneck height accordingly. You may need to adjust the gooseneck mounting height, tow vehicle height, or suspension to achieve a level towing condition.
All mounting bolts must be torqued to 120 ft-lb±5 ft-lb. This specification is critical; failure to properly torque the mounting bolts can result in failure, causing property damage, severe personal injury, or death. Torque the bolts once the gooseneck is positioned and secured with the supplied hardware.
The coupler lock is a padlock with a 2.5" lock pin length and 11/32" maximum pin diameter. It locks into a hole on the gooseneck to secure the coupler latch in the locked position.
You must connect the 7-pin power cable and the breakaway switch connector to the tow vehicle. The manual does not provide detailed wiring instructions; consult your tow vehicle's manual and the hitch manufacturer's owner's manual for proper connection procedures.
Wear safety glasses at all times during installation. Be mindful of pinch points on the gooseneck, including the spring and shock areas, the coupler and locking mechanism, and the pivot point of the upper and lower jaw. Safety chains and the cable release must be stowed to avoid catching on the tow vehicle, which could cause property and personal damage. The cable release can either be stowed in the hook or lay free in the tow vehicle once the coupler latch has been closed.
Verify the coupler latch is in the locked position. The latch should be in the forward position. If the latch is in the unlocked position, a failure to latch may result in severe property damage, serious personal injury, or death. Do not tow the RV with the coupler latch in the unlatched position.
After installation, verify that the RV pulls in a level condition. Check that the gooseneck is securely attached to the 5th wheel and that all nuts and bolts are tight. Ensure the coupler latches properly and that the latch is in the locked position. Verify the minimum 7-inch clearance between the truck bed and the 5th wheel. Test the coupler lock and cable release operation.
Regularly check the gooseneck and its components for damage or loose nuts and bolts. The coupler requires periodic grease maintenance. Apply grease to both the hitch ball and the coupler ball socket to avoid galling of similar metals. Always ensure the RV pulls in a level condition before traveling. If the coupler will not latch, the hitch ball may have excessive wear. Additionally, apply grease to both the hitch ball and the coupler ball socket to avoid galling of similar metals, which can prevent proper latching. Observe the gooseneck and hitch ball area once the RV is loaded; the coupler must close with the coupler lever in the forward position. If the problem persists, the hitch ball may need to be replaced.
