The CURT Helux Gooseneck Pin Box is a 5th wheel coupling system that connects a 5th wheel trailer to a pickup truck. It uses a ball-and-coupler mechanism to create a secure, articulated connection that allows the trailer to pivot when turning. The pin box assembly weighs 170 pounds and is available in six weight ratings to match your specific 5th wheel trailer's pin weight.
You must determine your 5th wheel's pin weight before purchasing. The best method is to take your fully loaded 5th wheel (including all cargo, ATVs, motorcycles, and full water tanks) to a certified scale like CAT Scale. Weigh the tow vehicle and 5th wheel together, then weigh the tow vehicle alone, and subtract to find the pin weight. Alternatively, multiply your 5th wheel's GVWR by 22% (0.22) for an approximate pin weight. Match your pin weight to the correct model: 2024044575 (1650–2144 lb), 2024044574 (2145–2484 lb), 2024044576 (2485–2984 lb), 2024044577 (2985–3469 lb), 2024044578 (3470–3964 lb), or 2024044579 (3965–5000 lb). For best results, use the actual weighed pin weight rather than the approximation.
The CURT Helux Gooseneck Pin Box requires a 2 5/16" hitch ball only. Do not use any other ball size.
A minimum clearance of 7 inches must be maintained between the truck bed rails and the underside of the front of the 5th wheel. This clearance is critical to avoid contact while hitching and turning. The pin box height should be adjusted using the trailer bracket holes to ensure this clearance is achieved while maintaining a level towing condition.
Required tools include: SAE socket set, SAE wrenches, tape measure, box-end wrench set, safety glasses, air compressor, and level. Proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
The kit includes: 1 gooseneck assembly, 10 hex bolts (5/8"-11 x 1 3/4", grade 5), 10 serrated-flange nuts (5/8"-11, grade 5), 2 safety chains, and 1 cable release. The manual states that the kit includes new mounting hardware and that you should not reuse the mounting hardware from the previous pin box.

Yes. Before beginning installation, level the RV front-to-back using the landing gear. This is the first step in the installation process and ensures proper pin box positioning.
No. The manual explicitly states: "The Gooseneck kit includes new mounting hardware. Do NOT reuse the mounting hardware from the previous pin box." You must use the new hardware supplied with the kit.
The pin box height should be adjusted using the trailer bracket holes to ensure two critical conditions: a level towing setup and a minimum clearance of 7 inches between the truck bed and the underside of the front of the 5th wheel. The gooseneck coupler bottom is 15½" from the center of the first mounting hole and 21½" from the center of the top mounting hole. Each set of holes above the first hole is graduated in 2" increments, allowing ample adjustment. Familiarize yourself with the upper deck mounting bracket hole spacing (typically 1" between holes, depending on manufacturer) to select the correct height.
Install five hex bolts and flange nuts on each side: three fasteners in the forward position and two fasteners in the rearward position. All bolts are 5/8"-11 x 1 3/4" grade 5, and all nuts are 5/8"-11 serrated-flange grade 5.
Torque the mounting bolts to 120 ft-lb ± 5 ft-lb. Failure to properly torque the mounting bolts can result in a failure causing property damage, severe personal injury, or death. Always refer to torque requirements when securing hardware during installation.
The Breakaway Switch Kit may be located on either the RV mounting bracket or the previous pin box. If it is installed on the previous pin box, uninstall it and install it per the manufacturer's recommendations. The manual does not provide specific installation instructions for the breakaway switch itself.
1. Place chocks firmly against the front and rear of each RV tire. If necessary, lower the tow vehicle's tailgate to allow the gooseneck to clear. 2. Measure clearance: measure from ground to the bed of the tailgate, measure from the tow vehicle bed to the top of the hitch ball, add these together, and verify the measurement to the bottom of the coupler is at least 2". 3. Back the tow vehicle slowly toward the RV and position the coupler directly over the hitch ball. Place the tow vehicle in PARK and set the parking brake before lowering the coupler. 4. Lower the RV until the coupler automatically latches. Connect the safety chains to the tow vehicle anchors. 5. Verify the coupler latch is in the locked position. A coupler lock (padlock with 2.5" lock pin length and 11/32" max pin diameter) can be locked in the hole on the gooseneck. 6. Connect the 7-pin power cable and breakaway switch connector to the tow vehicle.
The coupler lock is a padlock with a 2.5" lock pin length and 11/32" maximum pin diameter. It locks into a hole on the gooseneck to secure the coupler latch in the locked position.
Be mindful of pinch points while handling the gooseneck. Any place with moving parts or where two parts come together can be a pinch point and cause serious physical damage. Designated pinch points include: spring and shock areas, the coupler and locking mechanism, and the pivot point of the upper and lower jaw. Avoid placing hands or fingers in these areas during installation, operation, or maintenance.
Wear safety glasses at all times while installing this product. Properly support the pin box before removing mounting bolts and throughout removal and installation—an unsupported pin box can result in death, serious personal injury, or severe product and property damage. Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Be sure the RV is properly chocked and the tow vehicle is in PARK with the parking brake set before unlatching or latching the coupler.
Safety chains and the cable release must be stowed to avoid catching on the tow vehicle. Property and personal damage could occur if they are not properly secured. The cable release can either be stowed in the hook or lay free in the tow vehicle once the coupler latch has been closed.
1. Park the 5th wheel and chock the tires firmly, front and rear. Place the tow vehicle in PARK and set the parking brake. 2. Remove the coupler lock if installed. Disconnect the 7-way power plug, breakaway switch connection, and safety chains at the tow vehicle. 3. Disengage the gooseneck coupler by pulling the cable release toward the rear in the "hold open" position, locking it into the cable hook. 4. Extend the landing gear to lift the front of the 5th wheel until the gooseneck clears the hitch ball. Release the cable release from the hook. 5. Pull the tow vehicle clear of the 5th wheel and level the RV.
Always check the gooseneck and its components for damage or any loose nuts and bolts. Be sure the RV pulls in a level condition before traveling. The coupler needs to be checked for grease and maintained. Apply grease to the hitch ball and coupler ball socket to avoid galling of similar metals. There is a grease zerk in the gooseneck coupler for this purpose.
Verify that the coupler latch is in the locked position. The coupler lever should be in the forward position when locked. If the latch is in the unlocked position, a failure to latch may result in severe property damage, serious personal injury, or death. Do not tow the RV with the coupler latch in the unlatched position.

Yes. Apply grease to the hitch ball and coupler ball socket to avoid galling of similar metals. The gooseneck coupler has a grease zerk for this purpose. Check the coupler for grease and maintain it regularly.

Excessive noise may be caused by: 1) the gooseneck not being securely attached to the 5th wheel—verify it is securely attached, 2) damage to the coil spring—check its condition and replace if damaged or broken, 3) damage to or disconnection of the shock—look for damage and reconnect or replace if needed, or 4) the hitch mechanism—verify that unwanted noise is not coming from the hitch itself; the hitch manufacturer can provide guidelines for this check.
If the gooseneck coupler is open and will not close, the issue may be: 1) the hitch ball has excessive wear—inspect the ball for wear and replace if necessary, or 2) lack of grease—apply grease to the hitch ball and coupler ball socket to avoid galling of similar metals. The coupler must close with the coupler lever in the forward position. If the problem persists, consult the hitch manufacturer or contact CURT Product Support.
