The CURT Helux Gooseneck Pin Box is a coupling device that connects a 5th Wheel trailer to a tow vehicle. It uses a ball-and-coupler mechanism to secure the trailer's upper deck to the truck bed. The product is available in six different models (part numbers 2024044575 through 2024044579) rated for pin weights ranging from 1650 lb to 5000 lb loaded, allowing you to select the correct capacity for your specific 5th Wheel.
You must determine your 5th Wheel's pin weight before purchasing. The best method is to take your fully loaded 5th Wheel (including all cargo, toys, and full water tanks) to a certified scale such as CAT Scale. Follow the weighing procedure: (1) Connect the 5th Wheel to the tow vehicle and weigh front axle on Scale 1, rear axle on Scale 2, and RV axles on Scale 3; (2) Total Scales 1 and 2; (3) Disconnect and reweigh just the tow vehicle on Scales 1 and 2; (4) Total those weights; (5) Subtract the tow vehicle total from the combined total to find pin weight. Alternatively, multiply your 5th Wheel's GVWR by 22% (0.22) for an approximate pin weight. Match your pin weight to the correct model: 2024044575 (1650–2144 lb), 2024044574 (2145–2484 lb), 2024044576 (2485–2984 lb), 2024044577 (2985–3469 lb), 2024044578 (3470–3964 lb), or 2024044579 (3965–5000 lb).

A minimum clearance of 7 inches must be maintained between the truck bed rails and the underside of the front of the 5th Wheel during hitching and turning. This clearance is critical to prevent contact and damage. The Gooseneck mounting height should be adjusted using the trailer bracket holes to ensure this clearance is achieved while maintaining a level towing condition.
The following tools are required: SAE socket set, SAE wrenches, tape measure, box-end wrench set, safety glasses, air compressor, and level. Proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
The kit includes: (1) Gooseneck assembly, (10) hex bolts 5/8"-11 x 1 3/4" grade 5, (10) serrated-flange nuts 5/8"-11 grade 5, (2) safety chains, and (1) cable release. The kit includes new mounting hardware; do not reuse the mounting hardware from the previous pin box.
A minimum of two people are required to support the weight of the pin box during installation. The pin box assembly weighs 170 pounds. A forklift may be used to lift the Gooseneck into position as an alternative.

The installation sequence is: (1) Level the RV front-to-back using landing gear; (2) Back the tow vehicle under the 5th Wheel's upper deck; (3) Review the measurements in Step 3 to understand hole positions and clearances; (4) Pull the tow vehicle away from the 5th Wheel; (5) Remove fasteners from the old pin box and carefully lower it; (6) Lift the new Gooseneck and position it at a height ensuring level towing and minimum 7-inch clearance between truck bed rails and 5th Wheel; (7) Install five hex bolts and flange nuts on each side (three forward, two rearward); (8) Torque all mounting bolts to 120 ft-lb±5 ft-lb; (9) Install or relocate the Breakaway Switch Kit per manufacturer recommendations.
The Gooseneck must be positioned to achieve two critical conditions: (1) a level towing setup, and (2) a minimum clearance of 7 inches between the truck bed and the underside of the front of the 5th Wheel. The 5th Wheel's upper deck mounting brackets have multiple holes graduated in 2-inch increments. The bottom of the Gooseneck coupler to the center of the first mounting hole is 15½", and to the center of the top mounting hole is 21½". Adjust the mounting height using these holes as needed. Adjustment of the Gooseneck mounting height, tow vehicle height, or suspension may be necessary to accomplish a level towing condition.
Five hex bolts and flange nuts are installed on each side of the Gooseneck: three fasteners in the forward position and two fasteners in the rearward position, for a total of 10 bolts and 10 nuts (which are included in the kit).
All mounting bolts must be torqued to 120 ft-lb±5 ft-lb. Failure to properly torque the mounting bolts can result in a failure causing property damage, severe personal injury, or death. This torque must be applied after all bolts are installed and the Gooseneck is positioned correctly.
The mounting bolts are hex bolts, 5/8"-11 x 1 3/4", grade 5. The corresponding nuts are serrated-flange nuts 5/8"-11, grade 5. Ten of each are included in the kit.
The pin box assembly weighs 170 pounds.
Two electrical connections must be made to the tow vehicle: (1) a 7-pin power cable, and (2) a breakaway switch connector. These are connected in the final hitching step. The Breakaway Switch Kit may be located on either the RV mounting bracket or the previous pin box. If installed on the previous pin box, it must be uninstalled and reinstalled per the manufacturer's recommendations.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times during installation. The pin box must be properly supported throughout removal and installation to prevent death, serious injury, or property damage. Be mindful of pinch points: the spring and shock areas, the coupler and locking mechanism, and the pivot point of the upper and lower jaw can all cause serious physical damage. Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
A coupler lock is a padlock with a 2.5" lock pin length and 11/32" maximum pin diameter. It locks into a hole on the Gooseneck to secure the coupler. The lock is optional but recommended for security.
Observe the Gooseneck and hitch ball area once the RV is loaded. The coupler must close with the coupler lever in the forward position (locked position). If the latch is in the unlocked position, a failure to latch may result in severe property damage, serious injury, or death. Do not tow the RV with the coupler latch in the unlatched position.
Two safety chains are included in the kit. They must be connected to the tow vehicle anchors. Safety chains and the cable release must be stowed to avoid catching on the tow vehicle, as property and personal damage could occur.
The measurement from the bottom of the coupler to the top of the hitch ball must be at least 2 inches. To verify this: (1) With the tailgate down, measure from the ground to the bed of the tailgate; (2) Measure from the tow vehicle bed to the top of the hitch ball; (3) Add these measurements together; (4) The measurement to the bottom of the coupler must be ≥2".
After installation, verify that: (1) the Gooseneck is securely attached to the 5th Wheel; (2) all mounting bolts are torqued to 120 ft-lb±5 ft-lb; (3) the RV pulls in a level condition; (4) the coupler latches properly with the lever in the forward (locked) position; (5) safety chains are connected to the tow vehicle anchors; (6) the 7-pin power cable and breakaway switch connector are properly connected; (7) the coupler lock (if used) is engaged; and (8) there is a minimum 7-inch clearance between the truck bed and the 5th Wheel underside.
Regular maintenance includes: (1) Always check the Gooseneck and its components for damage or any loose nuts and bolts; (2) Ensure the RV pulls in a level condition before traveling; (3) Check the coupler for grease and maintain it regularly; (4) Apply grease to the hitch ball and coupler ball socket to avoid galling of similar metals. There is a grease zerk in the Gooseneck coupler for lubrication.
The Gooseneck is available in six models for pin weights from 1650 lb to 5000 lb. You must weigh your fully loaded 5th Wheel at a certified scale (such as CAT Scale) to determine the correct model. Excessive noise may be caused by: (1) the Gooseneck not being securely attached to the 5th Wheel—verify it is securely attached; (2) damage to or a broken coil spring—check the condition and replace if damaged or broken; (3) damage to the shock or a disconnected shock—look for damage and reconnect or replace if needed; or (4) the hitch mechanism—verify that unwanted noise is not coming from the hitch itself, as the hitch manufacturer can provide guidelines for this check.
If the coupler is open or not latching, the causes may be: (1) the coupler must close with the coupler lever in the forward position—observe the Gooseneck and hitch ball area once the RV is loaded to verify proper closure; (2) the hitch ball could have excessive wear—if so, it may need replacement; or (3) lack of lubrication—apply grease to the hitch ball and coupler ball socket to avoid galling of similar metals. There is a grease zerk in the Gooseneck coupler for this purpose.
