A CURT front trailer hitch allows you to use the front end of your vehicle for a variety of towing applications. They can be used for mounting a winch, a snow plow, a number of towing accessories and can even be used for some trailering applications. When space is limited, a front trailer hitch is commonly used to hold a cargo carrier, freeing up space inside the vehicle for extra cargo and making the rear mount receiver available to pull a trailer. At the boat ramp, your boat trailer can be hitched up to the front receiver hitch, giving you better control over the trailer as you launch. Some of the other accessories that can be used with a front tow hitch are the CURT winch mount, step pad, license plate holder, spare tire mount, skid shield and tow hooks. All CURT front trailer hitches provide a useful receiver tube to accept a 2" x 2" shank, and they are commonly used on trucks, vans and SUVs. This front trailer hitch is rated for 3,500 lbs. GTW and 350 lbs. TW. It also has a straight-line pull rating of 9,000 lbs. It is designed to be a custom trailer hitch for certain years of the Toyota Tacoma (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). The Curt 31313 is designed for Toyota Tacoma models from 2007 and newer, in both 2WD and 4WD configurations. However, 2WD models require drilling of two 1/2" diameter holes during installation, while 4WD models use existing frame holes. On 2007 models and newer, the front skid plate must be removed before installation.
Drilling is required only on 2WD models. You will need to drill two 1/2" diameter holes in the front bumper beam using the hitch as a template. 4WD models use existing holes in the frame and bumper beam, so no drilling is necessary.
The kit includes: 2× 1/2"-13 UNC 1-1/4" carriage bolts (Grade 8), 8× 7/16"-14 UNC 1-1/4" carriage bolts (Grade 8), 4× 1/2"-13 UNC 4" carriage bolts (Grade 5), 2× 1/2"-13 UNC flange nuts (Grade 8), 8× 7/16"-14 UNC flange nuts (Grade 8), 4× 1/2"-13 UNC flange nuts (Grade 5), 2× 0.250" × 1.25" × 2.00" square hole spacers (CM-SP3), and 4× 0.250" × 1.50" × 3.00" square hole spacers (CM-SP4).
Yes. You must remove the two bolts from each end of the front bumper beam and pull out the end caps (which should be returned to the customer). On 2007 models and newer, the front skid plate must also be removed before installation begins.
Tighten fasteners in this order: (1) Fasten main body to side plates, (2) Fasten strap to front bumper beam, (3) Fasten side plates to frame. Use the torque values specified in the next step for each fastener size.
Torque 1/2" × 4" fasteners to 64 ft.-lbs., 1/2" × 1-1/4" fasteners to 110 ft.-lbs., and all 7/16" fasteners to 59 ft.-lbs. Apply torque in the sequence specified: main body to side plates first, then strap to front bumper beam, then side plates to frame.
You must drill two 1/2" diameter holes in the front bumper beam. Use the hitch as a template to mark the hole locations. This drilling is required only on 2WD models; 4WD models use existing holes.
The hitch has a maximum straight-line pull rating of 9,000 lbs. However, you must not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Consult your Toyota Tacoma owner's manual for the specific limit for your model year.
Do not exceed your vehicle's front axle Gross Weight Rating (GAWR). Consult your owner's manual or the specification plate on your driver's door frame. Measure gross front axle weight by placing the front wheels of your loaded vehicle on a scale. Exceeding GAWR may overload the front axle and suspension, resulting in accident, property damage, and personal injury.
The hitch can be used for recovery and winching, but you must follow specific guidelines. Use only OEM tow hooks, recovery eyes, or a clevis mount for attachment—never use a ball mount as an anchor point, as this could cause severe personal injury or death. Winch cable must not exceed 15 degrees up or down from horizontal, or 45 degrees left or right from straight ahead. Attach the return cable to the tow hook or recovery eye when using a snatch block, never to the winch mount. Observe all winch manufacturer's recommendations.
Rear wheel traction may be reduced when the hitch is in use, which could affect vehicle handling. Reduce speed and drive with caution. The hitch extends the front of your vehicle, which may reduce approach angle—use caution when parking and maneuvering. Ensure the hitch does not obstruct your license plate, vehicle lights, driver view, or airflow into the grille.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This ongoing inspection helps maintain safe operation and prevent loosening due to vibration and use.
