A CURT front trailer hitch allows you to use the front end of your vehicle for a variety of towing applications. They can be used for mounting a winch, a snow plow, a number of towing accessories and can even be used for some trailering applications. When space is limited, a front trailer hitch is commonly used to hold a cargo carrier, freeing up space inside the vehicle for extra cargo and making the rear mount receiver available to pull a trailer. At the boat ramp, your boat trailer can be hitched up to the front receiver hitch, giving you better control over the trailer as you launch. Some of the other accessories that can be used with a front tow hitch are the CURT winch mount, step pad, license plate holder, spare tire mount, skid shield and tow hooks. All CURT front trailer hitches provide a useful receiver tube to accept a 2" x 2" shank, and they are commonly used on trucks, vans and SUVs. This front trailer hitch is rated for 3,500 lbs. GTW and 350 lbs. TW. It also has a straight-line pull rating of 9,000 lbs. It is designed to be a custom trailer hitch for certain years of the Toyota 4Runner (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary hardware for a complete installation and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

Underbody panel trimming is optional. You may remove the driver and passenger side underbody panels and return them to the vehicle owner, or trim and reinstall them. If trimming, refer to the underbody panel trim diagram on page 2 or 5. Trim dimensions are approximate; check fit prior to completing the trim.
Torque all M10 fasteners to 48 ft-lbs, all M12 fasteners to 86 ft-lbs, and all 5/8" fasteners to 180 lb-ft. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightness.
1. Remove driver and passenger side underbody panels (5 fasteners each). 2. Remove one hex bolt from the end of each frame rail (lowest outer bolt on each side). 3. Lift hitch into position, locating vehicle tow loops under hitch mounting plates. 4. Loosely insert M10 hex bolts with 3/8" conical tooth washers into the weldnuts where bolts were removed. 5. Loosely insert M12 bolts with 1/2" conical tooth washers into existing weldnuts on frame rail outsides. 6. Insert 5/8" carriage bolts through hitch mounting plates and tow loops; secure with supplied spacers and 5/8" flange nuts. 7. Torque all fasteners to specification. 8. If trimming, trim and reinstall underbody panels.
Fasteners should be inserted loosely first. In step 4, loosely insert M10 hex bolts with washers. In step 5, loosely insert M12 bolts with washers. In step 6, insert and loosely attach 5/8" carriage bolts with spacers and flange nuts. Only after all fasteners are in place should they be torqued to specification in step 7.
The original hex bolts removed from the end of each frame rail (lowest outer bolt on each side) should be returned to the vehicle owner. They are replaced with the included M10 hardware.
The vehicle tow loops are factory attachment points on the 4Runner frame. During installation, the hitch is positioned so that the vehicle tow loops are located under the hitch mounting plates. The carriage bolts are then inserted through both the hitch mounting plates and tow loops to secure the hitch.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing inspection helps maintain safe operation and prevent loosening due to vibration and use.
For maximum line pull rating, the winch cable must not exceed 15 degrees angle up or down from horizontal, and 45 degrees angle left or right from straight ahead. Exceeding these angles may overload the winch, winch mount, and/or front mounted receiver.
No. Never use a ball and/or ball mount as an anchor point for a tow strap or winch cable. Severe personal injury or death could result. Use OEM tow hooks, recovery eyes, or a clevis mount for attachment instead.
The front axle GAWR is the maximum weight the front axle can safely carry. Do not exceed your vehicle's front axle GAWR. Consult your owner's manual or the specification plate on the driver's door frame. Measure gross front axle weight by placing the front wheels of your loaded vehicle on a scale. Exceeding GAWR may overload the front axle and/or suspension, which could result in accident, property damage, and personal injury.
Do not obstruct vehicle lights. Reposition the front mounted license plate if it is obstructed by the hitch. Ensure the hitch does not block any lights or impede driver view.
The hitch extends the front of the vehicle, which may reduce approach angle. Use caution when parking and maneuvering. Additionally, rear wheel traction may be reduced when the hitch is in use, which could affect handling. Reduce speed and drive with caution.
