The roof cargo basket has a weight carrying capacity of 150 lbs. However, this capacity is limited to your vehicle's factory roof rack weight limit. You must never exceed the factory weight rating of the OEM roof rack, including the weight of the cargo carrier itself.
The CURT 18123 is designed to mount to factory OEM roof racks. The installation involves clamping the basket to your vehicle's existing roof bar using roof rack clamp assemblies. Ensure your vehicle has a compatible factory roof rack before purchasing.
The package includes a 4mm Allen wrench and a 5mm Allen wrench. You will also need a wrench (not specified in the manual) to tighten M6 bolts and nuts during assembly. No other tools are listed as required.
Assembly follows this sequence: (1) Assemble the front and rear halves of the basket, aligning the holes in the underside of the tubes. (2) Cover tubing joints with waterproof caps on top and bottom, with flat surfaces facing outward, and secure with M6 x 16mm screws. (3) Load the basket onto the roof bar, insert the saddle between basket and bar, and secure with top and bottom brackets using M6 x 65mm and M6 x 50mm screws with washers. (4) Snap fairing clamps on front tubes, position the fairing, and secure with M6 x 25mm screws and M6 nylock nuts. (5) Install bicycle using safety strap and fork mount.
Cover the tubing joints with waterproof caps on both the top and bottom of the basket. The flat surface of the caps must face outward. Insert M6 x 16mm screws from the bottom side through the caps and into the round tubing. Use a wrench to tighten the screws.
Load the basket onto the roof bar and adjust as necessary for a secure fit. Insert the saddle between the cargo basket and the roof bar. Secure the basket, saddle, and roof bar together using top and bottom brackets. Use M6 x 65mm screws for some connections and M6 x 50mm screws for others, along with washers. Insert screws from the top bracket to secure to the roof bar. Tighten all fasteners to 7 ft-lbs. (the standard M6 bolt torque).
Snap the fairing clamps onto the front tubes of the basket. Position the fairing on the front of the cargo basket and align its holes with the fairing clamps. Insert M6 x 25mm screws through the fairing and into the clamps, then embed M6 nylock nuts into the hex recess in the fairing clamps. Use a wrench to tighten the screws. Do not over-tighten, as this can break the plastic clamps.
To carry a bicycle: (1) Remove the front wheel from the bicycle. (2) Insert the front fork onto the fork mount at the front of the cargo basket. (3) Press the quick-release lever down to secure the fork. (4) Wrap the safety strap around the rear tire and the round tubing for additional security. (5) Feed the end of the safety strap into the buckle and tighten it securely. Ensure the fork is fully seated onto the fork mounts before traveling, and perform a final check to confirm the bike is secure.
Yes. The two adapters are double-sided and compatible with wider forks. You can remove an adapter, flip it around, and reinstall it to use the alternate mounting option. A 9mm bushing is pre-installed, but it can be replaced with a 12mm bushing if your bicycle requires it.
All M6 bolts on the CURT 18123 should be tightened to 7 ft-lbs. unless otherwise noted in the instructions.
