It connects your vehicle's taillight wiring to a 4-flat connector that can be attached to any vehicle with functioning trailer lights, enabling both the tow vehicle and towing vehicle taillights to function together.
The CURT 58977 is designed for passenger cars with trunk-mounted taillight connectors. The manual shows wiring locations P3 and P4 (behind driver and passenger side taillight housings inside the trunk) as the installation points. Yes. Step 1 requires you to locate the vehicle battery (check your owner's manual for location) and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Fasten this wire down and away from the battery during installation, and reconnect it after all other steps are complete.
Open the vehicle's trunk and remove all trunk floor coverings. You will also need to remove the rear scuff panel (using a panel trim removal tool to remove three fasteners) and pull back the trunk liner on both sides to access the taillight wiring connectors.
Pull back the trunk liner to locate the taillight wiring connectors. Separate the connectors from the taillight housing carefully, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the custom RV harness end with the yellow wire between the separated connectors on the driver side. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with the locking tabs in place. Repeat on the passenger side with the green wire connector. Route the harness behind the spring in the side wall of the trunk and zip tie in place, keeping wires away from the spring.
Locate a grounding point near the box, such as an existing screw or bolt in the vehicle frame. If no suitable point exists, drill a 3/32" pilot hole. The area must be free from rust, dirt, and paint—use an abrasive pad or paper to clean it. Secure the white ground wire with its ring terminal to the existing fastener or use the provided ground screw.
Drilling may be required. You must locate a grounding point for the white ground wire. If an existing screw or bolt in the vehicle frame is available, no drilling is needed. If not, you will need to drill a 3/32" pilot hole. Additionally, Step 8 requires using a rotary tool to cut a relief in the trunk pan hole to allow the 4-flat connector to pass through the grommet hole.
Remove the grommet from the vehicle body. Using a wire cutter, make a cut into the grommet large enough to allow the wiring to be placed inside the mounting groove. Be careful not to cut any wires. Reseat the grommet and use the provided sealant to seal the cut and around all wires. Apply additional sealant as needed to ensure a tight seal and keep the trunk dry and exhaust out of the vehicle.
Route the 4-flat wire above the rear suspension and along the side of the fuel tank on the driver side to the front of the tank, securing loosely with provided cable ties. Follow the brake lines up the firewall to the top of the engine compartment. From the top, route the 4-flat along the firewall to the passenger side. Route it between the inner fender/headlight and the coolant tank to the front of the vehicle and zip tie in place. Keep wiring away from hot spots, pinch points and moving objects.
Secure any excess wire so it is not drooping or dangling, but not so tight that it causes unnecessary strain, which could lead to breakage over time. After removing slack from the 4-flat wire, tighten any zip ties and add as needed. Use a zip tie to fasten any excess wire to a solid spot along the driver-side inner fender. Reinstall all items removed during installation.
Do not exceed the product rating or tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Additionally, before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury. Keep all wiring away from hot spots, pinch points and moving objects during routing.
Once the custom wiring harness is installed, verify that it is functioning by attaching the 4-flat to any vehicle with functioning trailer lights. The taillights on the tow vehicle should function along with the taillights on the towing vehicle. You can also use a test light to check for proper function.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.

The grommet seal is not tight. The provided sealant must be applied to seal the cut in the grommet and around all wires. If the seal is incomplete, water can enter the trunk. Remove the grommet, reapply sealant to the cut and around all wires, and reseat the grommet. Apply additional sealant as needed to ensure a tight seal. This will keep the trunk dry and exhaust out of the vehicle.
