This Chevy Silverado 1500 tow bar baseplate is constructed from high-quality steel and is precisely welded for a perfect fit. It is physically tested for absolute safety and peace of mind while dinghy towing. It also features a unique co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and highly durable powder coat to protect against the outdoor elements. This base plate for towing comes with attachment tabs, safety cables and installation hardware.

The 70149 is a permanent baseplate with safety cables manufactured by CURT for dinghy towing applications. It attaches to the vehicle's front tow hook housing and provides a connection point for a tow bar. The baseplate includes two safety cables rated for 7500 lbs each, designed to help prevent complete vehicle separation in the event of a disconnect.
The kit includes: one 70149-DSWA driver-side wing assembly, one 70149-PSWA passenger-side wing assembly, one 70149-EB-WA electrical bracket, 10 handle nuts (1/2-13, Grade 8), 10 S-Con washers, 2 hex head bolts (1/2-13 x 5"), 10 flat washers, 4 Nylock nuts (1/2-13), 2 hex head bolts (1/2-13 x 1"), 1 hex head bolt (1/4-20 x 3/4"), 1 Nylock nut (1/4-20), 2 self-drilling screws (12-14 x 1"), 2 quick links (0.500"), 2 cap plugs, 2 baseplate T-bolts, 10 hex head bolts (1/2-13 x 1 1/2"), and 2 safety cables rated for 7500 lbs.

Required tools are: flat screwdriver, utility knife, torque wrench, drill, reciprocating saw, 1/2" drill bit, 10 mm socket, 13 mm socket, 15 mm socket, 18 mm socket, 18 mm wrench, T-15 Torx bit, ratchet, and trim panel pry tool. You will also need Loctite RED threadlocker.
You must permanently remove the recovery loops or D-rings. You must temporarily remove the bumper, skid shield, grille, fascia cover, handle, core support bolts, plastic shroud above the bumper, and tow hooks. The plastic shroud will not be reinstalled. All other components are reinstalled after baseplate installation.
Installation sequence: (1) Remove handle using T-15 Torx. (2) Remove fascia cover push pins. (3) Remove core support bolts using 10 mm socket. (4) Remove grille and unplug electrical connections. (5) Remove skid plate bolts using 13 mm socket. (6) Remove support bracket bolts using 15 mm socket. (7) Remove tow hook housing bolts using 18 mm socket. (8) Remove plastic shroud push pins. (9) Remove bumper top bolts. (10) Unplug bumper electrical connection. (11) Remove tow hooks using 18 mm socket and wrench. (12) Remove front bracket bolt and loosen rear bolt. (13) Drill out existing hole with 1/2" bit. (14) Slide baseplate onto bracket and start rear bolt loose. (15) Install bottom bolt and torque to 110 ft-lbs. Torque rear bolt to 64 ft-lbs. (16) Drill back slotted hole. (17) Install four bolts and torque to 110 ft-lbs. Bend handle nuts out of way. (18) Trim bumper back around tow hook openings. (19) Trim grille rib for electrical rod clearance. (20) Install safety cables. (21) Reinstall bumper, skid plate, grille, and fascia cover.
Yes. You must drill out the existing hole on the bottom of the tow hook housing using a 1/2" drill bit (Step 13). You must also drill out the back slotted hole using the baseplate as a template with a 1/2" drill bit (Step 16). You may need to ream out additional side holes with a 1/2" drill bit as needed.
Two permanent trimming operations are required: (1) Using a reciprocating saw, trim the back of the bumper around each tow hook opening to allow clearance for the baseplate (Step 18). Trim as needed for best fit. (2) Using a reciprocating saw, cut the bottom right-of-center rib on the grille to allow clearance for the electrical rods (Step 19). Trim as needed for proper fitment. The electrical mounting rods may also need to be bent to fit into the grille.
Torque specifications are: (1) Bottom hole on baseplate (1/2" x 1" bolt with S-Con washer and handle nut): 110 ft-lbs (Step 15). (2) Rear bolt from Step 14 (after bottom bolt is installed and torqued): 64 ft-lbs (Step 15). (3) Four 1/2" x 1-1/2" bolts with S-Con washers and handle nuts: 110 ft-lbs (Step 17a). (4) Bottom two bolts on bracket below tow hook housing: 110 ft-lbs (Step 17a). Use Loctite RED on all bolt threads before tightening.
The electrical work is minimal and involves only reinstallation: (1) When removing the grille, unplug two electrical connections on the passenger side and one hose on the driver side (Step 4b). (2) When removing the bumper, unplug the electrical connection on the passenger side (Step 10). (3) During reinstallation, attach the electrical mounting bracket to the vehicle using two 1/2" x 1" bolts with Nylock nuts (Step 22). (4) Reconnect all electrical connectors and hoses when reinstalling the bumper, skid plate, grille, and fascia cover (Step 22). The electrical mounting rods may need to be bent to fit into the grille.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times during installation. Take care when cutting any plastic or metal as injury may occur if done improperly. When removing the skid plate, support it because removing the last bolt may cause it to fall. Once the bumper top bolts are removed, the bumper is no longer supported. Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity when using this baseplate.
Two safety cables must be installed. Each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle. The cables included with the 70149 are rated for 7500 lbs each. Cables must be connected to both the baseplate and the vehicle frame. Make sure cables do not pinch or interfere with hoses, wiring, or other components. Safety cables are not a replacement for safety chains connecting the tow vehicle to the towed vehicle.
After installation, verify that: (1) All electrical connectors and hoses are connected properly (Step 22). (2) All fasteners are tight and secure. (3) The bumper, skid plate, grille, and fascia cover are properly reinstalled. (4) The electrical mounting rods fit properly into the grille (they may need bending). (5) Safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. (6) The handle nuts are bent out of the way. Periodic inspection of the product should be performed to ensure all hardware and components remain secure.
Mild automotive detergent may be used to clean the product. Do not use dish detergent, abrasive cleaners, abrasive pads, wire brushes, or other similar products that may damage the finish. Periodically check the condition of all towing equipment. Ensure all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. Do not tow with worn or damaged parts.
The installed attachment tabs have a height of 22 inches and a width of 30 inches.
Yes. Use Loctite RED on all bolt threads before tightening. This is required during baseplate installation (Steps 15 and 17a) to ensure bolts remain secure.
After all bolts are tightened to the specified torque, bend in all of the handles on the nuts so they are out of the way (Step 17b). This prevents them from interfering with other components.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate (Step 20). The manual shows recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle. If additional options may interfere with the suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Install cables on both sides of the vehicle.

Temporarily remove: bumper, skid shield, grille, fascia cover, handle, core support bolts, plastic shroud, and tow hooks. Permanently remove: recovery loops/D-rings. All temporary components are reinstalled after baseplate installation.
Installation is rated as Difficult. Difficulty levels are based on time and effort involved and may vary depending on installer expertise, vehicle condition, and proper tools and equipment.
The electrical mounting rods may need to be bent to fit into the grille (Step 22). Carefully bend the rods as needed to achieve proper fitment. Ensure the rods do not interfere with grille operation or other components.
You may need to ream out additional side holes with a 1/2" drill bit as needed (Step 16). You may also need to trim the bumper and grille as needed for best fit (Steps 18-19). If fitment issues persist, verify that all holes have been drilled to the correct size and that the baseplate is properly aligned on the bracket.
Support the skid plate when removing the last bolt to prevent it from falling (Step 5). If the skid plate has already fallen, inspect it for damage before reinstalling. Ensure all bolts are properly tightened when reinstalling.
Reposition the safety cables so they do not rub against any hoses or moving parts (Step 20). If the recommended mounting location causes interference, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame instead. Ensure cables are routed away from all moving components and fluid lines.
