The CURT 70136 is a tow bar base plate assembly designed to provide a mounting point for towing trailers. It consists of driver-side and passenger-side base plates, mounting tabs, safety cables rated at 7,500 lbs each, and all necessary hardware for installation. The installed attachment tabs measure 16" in height and 37.5" in width.

Required tools are: sockets (7mm, 10mm, 7/16", 9/16"), Torx bits (T-15, T-20), nut driver (5/16"), wrenches (7/16", 9/16"), hole saw (2-1/2"), drill bit (3/8"), drill, torque wrench, large clamp, utility knife, tape measure, and flat screwdriver.
You must temporarily remove the bumper cover/grill, washer reservoir, and temperature sensor. The radiator cover, wire harness, and shutter mounting flanges also require removal or disconnection during installation. All components are reinstalled after the base plate is secured.
1. Remove twelve push fasteners from the radiator cover (six per side) and set aside. 2. Use 7mm socket to remove six bolts from the top of the grill. 3. Use T-15 Torx bit to remove five bolts along the front edge of each wheel well. 4. From behind the wheel well liner, use 7mm socket to remove the bolt at the bumper cover seam on both sides. 5. Use T-15 Torx to remove eight bolts from the bottom of the bumper cover (two per side, four in center). 6. Pull bumper cover outward from the wheel wells, disconnect the temperature sensor on the passenger side by squeezing the red button and pulling the connector tab down, then remove the cover.
Use a 10mm socket to remove the nut from the top of the washer reservoir on the driver side. Remove all lines from the reservoir and plug the fluid lines to prevent spillage. Use a 10mm socket to remove the two bolts from the bottom of the reservoir. Set the reservoir aside; it will be reinstalled after the base plate is secured.
Trim the shutter mounting flanges as needed on both sides of the vehicle (Step 7). Some trimming of the flange on the radiator may be required on the passenger side when raising the base plate weldments into position (Step 9). After the base plate is installed, mark and trim the bumper cover as needed for base plate clearance before reinstalling it (Step 14).
Use a 3/8" drill bit to drill the forward-most top holes in the frame (Step 10). Drill for the remaining four holes after fishwiring the initial carriage bolts (Step 11). Use a 2-1/2" hole saw to cut holes for the T-bolt sockets in the bumper cover after it is positioned (Step 14).
Fishwiring is a technique used to route fasteners through the vehicle frame. In Step 10, you fishwire the 3/8" carriage bolt and square hole spacer into the frame and through the base plate, then secure with 3/8" serrated-flange nuts. The manual lists four fishwires (3/8") as included parts. Repeat this process on both sides of the vehicle.
Raise each base plate weldment (driver side #1 and passenger side #2) and clamp in place on both sides of the vehicle (Step 9). Some trimming of the radiator flange on the passenger side may be required during this step. The base plates remain clamped while you drill the forward-most top holes and fishwire the carriage bolts. Remove the clamps after the initial fasteners are installed (Step 10).
All 3/8" hardware must be torqued to 37 lb-ft. This applies to the 3/8" nylock nuts (#9) and 3/8" hex head cap screws (#7) installed in Step 11. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightening.
The base plate is secured using: 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" carriage bolts, grade 8 (qty 4); 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" hex head cap screws, grade 8 (qty 6); 3/8"-16 serrated-flange nuts, grade 8 (qty 4); 3/8"-16 nylock nuts, grade 8 (qty 6); and 1/4" x 1" x 2" square hole spacers (qty 4). The carriage bolts are fishwired through the frame first, then the remaining holes are drilled and secured with hex head cap screws and nylock nuts. All hardware is torqued to 37 lb-ft.
Install the permanent safety cables (#4) by looping them around the vehicle frame and linking them to the tow bar base plate on both the driver side (#1) and passenger side (#2). There must be one cable on each side of the vehicle. Ensure the cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring or other components. Each cable is rated for 7,500 lbs.
After the base plate is fully secured and safety cables are installed, reinstall the washer reservoir (Step 13), then hold the bumper cover as close to its original position, mark and trim it as needed for base plate clearance, and use the 2-1/2" hole saw to cut holes for the T-bolt sockets. Reinstall the bumper cover, radiator cover, and reconnect all electrical components (Step 14).
Each safety cable included with the CURT 70136 is rated for 7,500 lbs. Two cables are included (one for each side of the vehicle), and both must be installed and properly routed to avoid pinching or interfering with hoses, wiring or other components.
