A custom 5th wheel bracket features a shape that contours to the frame of your truck and uses pre-drilled holes in the frame wherever possible to make installation quick and easy. Depending on your model of pickup truck, they also reduce or eliminate the need for drilling. These particular custom 5th wheel brackets offer a custom fit for certain model years of the Ford F-150 (except 5.5-foot bed) (see application info to verify fitment). Finished in a durable liquid A-coat, CURT custom 5th wheel brackets are made to last. Yes. You must drill pilot holes and enlarge them. Step 4 requires drilling 1/8" pilot holes at marked positions. Step 6 requires enlarging these holes to 9/16" using a step drill. The manual states "DRILL APPLICATION: NO" on the information box, which indicates that drilling is not optional—it is a required part of the installation process.
The manual provides two critical warnings: (1) "During drilling protect the fuel tank and filler tubes, brake lines and wire harness by placing a piece of metal between the box floor and potential components at risk on the driver's side. This will prevent drilling into these items." (2) "When drilling holes be aware of potential risks to vehicle components and make appropriate safe guards to protect them from damage." Place a protective metal barrier under the truck bed on the driver's side before drilling.
First, drill 1/8" pilot holes at the marked positions (Step 4). Then enlarge these holes to 9/16" using a step drill (Step 6). The side plate slots must align with the 1/8" pilot holes before enlargement.
All 1/2" fasteners must be torqued to 110 lb-ft. Torque in the following sequence: first torque the mounting rails to the side plates, then torque the side plates to the truck frame. This final torquing occurs after all fasteners are installed and hand-tightened.
The center line of the hitch is positioned 50.938 inches from the center line of the axle. The mounting rails are centered between the weld seams on the truck bed floor. In Step 7, after loosely installing the side plates hand-tight, insert the head of the fishwire through the 1" mounting hole on the side of the truck frame and out through the access hole. Slide a spacer over the fishwire head and attach a 1/2" x 1.5" carriage bolt. Pull the other end of the fishwire until the bolt is in position. Place the side plate into the bolt and install a 1/2" hex flange nut. Repeat this process for the other hole in the side plate.
1. Lower and remove spare tire (skip on 2009+). 2. Remove axle bumper hardware from both sides. 3. Center and position first mounting rail. 4. Mark, center punch, and drill 1/8" pilot holes. 5. Check side plate alignment. 6. Enlarge holes to 9/16". 7. Loosely install side plates and fishwire fasteners hand-tight. 8. Reposition mounting rail. 9. Install 1/2" x 2" carriage bolts with U-shaped spacers, tighten snug. 10. Position second mounting rail with hitch product. 11. Repeat steps 4, 6, 9 for second rail. 12. Torque all 1/2" fasteners to 110 lb-ft (rails first, then side plates). 13. Re-install axle bumper hardware. 14. Re-install spare tire.
Use a tape measure to center each rail between the weld seams on the length of the truck box floor. Position the rail at the proper distance from the rear edge of the truck box as shown on the Rail Location Diagram (page 2). The center line of the hitch should be 50.938 inches from the center line of the axle. Ensure the mounting rail is centered between the weld seams to ensure the fifth wheel will have a snug fit.
The U-shaped spacers (.313" x 1.00 x 2.00") are installed with the 1/2" x 2" carriage bolts and positioned in the corrugation between the truck bed and the mounting rail. This ensures metal-to-metal contact between the rail and the truck bed, which is critical for proper installation.
If you plan to use more than one hitch product (fifth wheel, roller, or gooseneck) with the rails, the manual recommends using both products at the same time during Step 10 to align the second rail. This ensures that one product does not compromise the fit of the other.
