Yes, the appearance panel must be trimmed or removed to install the hitch. You must obtain the vehicle owner's permission before trimming. The shaded area shown in Figure 4 should be trimmed, and the panel can then be reinstalled or returned to the owner with fasteners. Two fasteners on the appearance panel are removed during installation and reinstalled afterward if the panel was trimmed.
Pull wires are used to feed the carriage bolts and spacer blocks into the frame rails through the access holes. The pull wire is fed through the forward hole and out the rearward access slot. The spacer and carriage bolt are attached to the pull wire and fed through the access slot using a kink wire process to keep the block independent of the bolt. The pull wires remain attached until the hitch is raised into position and the conical and hex nuts are installed.
Raise the hitch into position by feeding the pull wires through the forward and rearward slots in the brackets. The middle slot will locate the appearance panel stud in the frame. Once positioned, carefully remove the pull wires and attach the conical washer and hex nut. Finger-tighten these fasteners and center the hitch on the vehicle before final torque.
All 7/16-14 GR5 fasteners must be tightened to 55 Lb.-Ft. (75 N·M) using a torque wrench. This includes the carriage bolts, hex nuts, and conical washers. Fasteners should be finger-tightened first while the hitch is centered, then final-torqued to specification.
The drawbar must be used in the RISE position only. The drawbar kit (3594) is sold separately and must be installed according to its own instructions.
Observe safety precautions when working beneath the vehicle and wear eye protection. Do not cut access or attachment holes with a torch.
