You will need wrenches in three sizes: ¾", 18mm, and 19mm. A torque wrench is required to tighten fasteners to specification. A wire pull is provided with the hitch. No drill bits are needed as no drilling is required for this installation.
The fastener kit 75522F includes: 6 carriage bolts ½-13 x 1.75 GR5, 4 lock washers ½", 6 blocks ¼" x 1 x 3, 2 flat washers ½", 4 conical washers ½", 2 hex bolts M12 x 1.75 x 45mm CL10.9, and 6 hex nuts ½-13. A 6 ½" flat washer must be placed between the hitch side bracket and frame. The manual also references existing weldnuts in the vehicle frame that will be used.
Yes. Step 1 of the installation requires lowering the exhaust by removing rubber exhaust hangers from the exhaust hanger bracket. On models with dual exhaust, this must be done on both sides of the vehicle. The exhaust is raised back into position in Step 9 after the hitch is secured.
Lowering the spare tire is not required but may ease installation. The manual notes that lowering the spare tire may make hitch installation easier. If lowered, the spare tire is raised back into position in Step 10 after the hitch is secured.
Only if your vehicle has a wiring harness present on the driver's side frame rail. Step 3 states that on vehicles with wiring harness present on the driver's side frame rail, it will be necessary to detach the harness by carefully pulling it from the frame. The frame will be relocated after hitch installation. Figure 3 shows the suggested relocation of the wiring harness.
The installation sequence is: (1) Lower exhaust, (2) Remove forwardmost M12 bolts from bumper bracket, (3) Detach wiring harness if present, (4) Fishwire ½" carriage bolts and blocks through access slot, (5) Raise hitch into position with flat washers and conical washers/nuts, (6) Loosely install M12 bolts into existing weldnuts, (7) Fishwire additional carriage bolts through access holes, (8) Install lock washers and nuts, then torque all fasteners, (9) Raise exhaust, (10) Raise spare tire if lowered, (11) Relocate wiring harness. Do not tighten fasteners until Step 8.
Fishwire is a technique for routing fasteners through frame access slots and holes. Figure 2 shows the proper fishwire technique: kink the pull wire to keep the block independent of the bolt, then thread the carriage bolt and block through the access slot in the vehicle frame and down through the square hole in the frame. This allows fasteners to be installed in locations that are not directly accessible.
A 6 ½" flat washer must be placed between the hitch side bracket and the frame at the attachment point. This is required on both sides of the vehicle. The washer is installed in Step 5 when the hitch is raised into position.
All ½-13 GR5 fasteners must be tightened with a torque wrench to 75 lb.-ft. (102 N·m). This applies to the carriage bolts and nuts used to secure the hitch to the vehicle frame.
All M12 x 1.75 CL10.9 fasteners must be tightened with a torque wrench to 92 lb.-ft. (125 N·m). These are the hex bolts that replace the forwardmost bumper bracket bolts removed during installation.
Fasteners are installed loosely in Steps 5 and 6 to hold the hitch in position before final torquing. Step 5 specifies loosely installing conical washers and nuts. Step 6 specifies loosely installing conical washers and M12 bolts. All fasteners are then tightened to specification in Step 8 after all bolts are in place.
Observe safety precautions when working beneath a vehicle and wear eye protection. Do not cut access or attachment holes with a torch. When raising the hitch into position, be careful not to push bolts installed in Step 4 back into the frame. If the hitch is removed, plug all holes in the trunk pan or other body panels to prevent entry of water and exhaust fumes.
Check the hitch frequently, making sure all fasteners and ball are properly tightened. The manual emphasizes this as an ongoing maintenance requirement, not just a one-time check after installation.
A hitch or ball which has been damaged should be removed and replaced. Do not attempt to repair a damaged hitch or ball.
