The rubber square plug is located in each frame rail. You must remove 1 rubber square plug from each frame rail (2 total) to access the frame for hitch installation. These plugs should be returned to the vehicle owner after removal.
Pull wires (Part #55392) are used to feed the carriage bolts and spacers through the access square holes in the frame. You feed the carriage bolt and spacer through the access square hole using the pull wires for both vertical and horizontal slots. Leave the pull wires attached initially, then raise the hitch into position and feed the pull wires through the bracket slot. Finally, remove the pull wires and install the conical washers, hex nuts, and lock washers to the hitch.
The conical washer teeth side must be against the hitch. This orientation is shown in the installation manual and is critical for proper fastener assembly.
Trailhawk installation differs in several ways: (1) Remove 4 extra plastic rivets securing the heat shield around the lower fascia and take the heat shield down. (2) Remove 2 existing M14 bolts from the rear vertical and horizontal frame on each side and keep them for reassembly. (3) Feed only 1 vertical hardware through the forward square slot and reuse the 2 M14 bolts removed earlier on each side instead of using all carriage bolts. (6) Use the M14 CL 10.9 fasteners at 148 Lb.-Ft. (201 N·M) torque in addition to the ½-13 GR8 fasteners.
The spacers (.250 x 1 x 3, Part #3022) are used during the hitch installation process. You feed the carriage bolt and spacer together through the access square hole in the frame using the pull wires. The spacer helps position the bolt correctly within the frame access hole.
Only if equipped. If your Jeep Cherokee has integrated rear fascia exhaust outlets, you must remove them before installation. Use a 7mm socket to remove 3 bolts from around each exhaust outlet, then remove the outlets. This step applies to 2014-2018 models and Trailhawk models.
For 2019 Trailhawk models, trim the lower fascia before raising the hitch into position (after step 5). For 2019 non-Trailhawk models, trim the fascia after step 8, once the hitch is in position. In both cases, trim a 3.75" (height) by 3.5" (width) area centered on the lower fascia.

The number of cable ties varies by model year. For 2014-2018 and Trailhawk models, use 4 cable ties total: 1 set to secure vehicle wiring to the exhaust hanger bracket. For 2019 models, use 4 cable ties total: 2 to secure vehicle wiring to the exhaust hanger bracket and 2 to secure the lower fascia to the crosstube.
After raising the hitch into position and removing the pull wires, loosely install the conical washers, hex nuts, lock washers (if needed), and M14 bolts (Trailhawk only) to the hitch. Do not tighten them yet. All fasteners are tightened together in the final step using a torque wrench to the specified torque values.
The carriage bolts are ½-13 x 1.75 GR8 (Grade 8). Six of these bolts are included in fastener kit 75998F. They must be tightened to 110 Lb.-Ft. (149 N·M) using a torque wrench.
The M14 bolts are CL 10.9 (Class 10.9). These are factory bolts that are removed from the rear vertical and horizontal frame and reused during installation. They must be tightened to 148 Lb.-Ft. (201 N·M) using a torque wrench.
The hex nuts are ½-13 GR8 (Grade 8). Six of these nuts are included in fastener kit 75998F. They are tightened to 110 Lb.-Ft. (149 N·M) as part of the ½-13 GR8 fastener assembly.
