Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Before mounting, clean the flat mount surface area using a 50-50 mixture of rubbing alcohol and water. The mounting point should be behind the partially removed trim panel close to the grommet.
The connector has four ends with different colored wires: brown and red wires connect to the driver's side taillight, yellow wire connects to the driver's side taillight in the bumper, and green wire connects to the passenger's side taillight in the bumper. Insert each T-One® Connector end between the vehicle and taillight connectors. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before insertion.
Locate the grommet underneath the exposed area on the driver's side. Carefully slit the grommet so that both the yellow and green wires and the T-One® Connector ends pass through it to the other side of the vehicle's body. After installation, seal the slit grommet with silicone rubber (not included) to prevent moisture or dirt from entering the vehicle.
After disconnecting the negative battery cable, cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow heat-shrinkable butt connector provided. Route the black 12 gauge wire from the front of the vehicle rearward along the frame rail, avoiding hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, and pinch points. Connect the other end to the black power wire on the T-One® Connector's black box using another yellow heat-shrinkable butt connector. Connect the power wire to the positive battery terminal via the fuse holder and black 12 gauge wire. 6. Reconnect the negative battery cable. 7. Install the 15-amp fuse. 8. Test with a test light or trailer. 9. Reset the electrical system by temporarily removing the ignition key.

Two yellow heat-shrinkable butt connectors are provided. Use one to connect the fuse holder wire to the black 12 gauge wire, and use the other to connect the black 12 gauge wire to the black power wire on the T-One® Connector's black box. To apply: heat the connector using a heat gun, starting in the center of the splice connector and heating from the center out to the edges on each end until the tubing shrinks and sealant flows. Allow to cool before inspecting the splice.

If the issue persists, check chassis grounds and ensure ring terminals are in full contact with the vehicle chassis.

Open the rear hatch. On the driver's side, use a trim panel tool, Phillips screwdriver, or 10 mm socket to remove the plastic threshold cover, cargo trays, and the side panel. Be careful not to break the mounting tabs. This exposes the vehicle's taillight wiring harness.
Underneath the vehicle on the passenger's side, locate the black environmental cover. Using a trim panel tool, remove the 3 plastic clips carefully to avoid damaging them. Using a 10 mm socket, remove the plastic nut and set the cover aside.
Route the 4-way flat connector through the driver's side panel and threshold into the storage compartment and store it there when not in use.
After reconnecting the negative battery cable, install the 15-amp fuse into the fuse holder. Then test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. Ensure all connections are complete for the T-One® Connector to function properly.
After completing the electrical connections, reinstall any trim panels, cargo trays, threshold covers, and other items that were removed during installation. Be careful not to pinch or cut the wires when reinstalling these components.

A test light is also provided. Silicone rubber sealant is not included but is required for sealing the grommet.
The black power wire is 12 gauge (12 ga.). This wire connects from the fuse holder to the black power wire on the T-One® Connector's black box using a yellow heat-shrinkable butt connector.
If the installation activates circuit protection, start the vehicle and turn off all functions: tail lights (head lights), brake, and turns. Remove the module power fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test. This should reset the circuit protection.
