The Blue Ox BX1151 Tow Bar Bracket is a high-quality, custom designed base plate engineered for each specific towed vehicle. Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

The fascia is removed and reinstalled. The tow hooks are removed and not reinstalled. The bumper is removed and not reinstalled. On vehicles with a secondary radiator, the lower shutter housing and radiator mounting bracket are removed and reinstalled. The foam piece on the back of the fascia is removed and not reinstalled. The plastic cover on the back of the fascia is removed and not reinstalled.
Yes. Drilling is required. You will drill out four plastic rivets using a 1/4" drill bit (or two plastic rivets on vehicles with secondary radiator) from the plastic piece on the bottom of the bumper. You will also drill a 1/2" hole in the frame using the support bracket as a template. Additionally, a 1/2" drill bit is used to drill the bottom inside hole on the front of the baseplate.
Yes. Some drilling and trimming is required. On vehicles with secondary radiator, you will use a reciprocating saw to trim the shutter housing (3-1/4" L × 1-1/2" W × 1/4" D on each side, leaving the mounting hole intact) and use a cutting wheel to trim the radiator mounting bracket. You will use a reciprocating saw to remove an indicated area from the driver side of the plastic piece on the back of the fascia. You will use a utility knife to trim plastic shroud on both sides of the vehicle. After cutting frame edges, use good quality paint to spray cut edges to prevent rusting.
Torque specifications for Grade 5 bolts (in foot-pounds) are: 1/4" = 10, 5/16" = 19, 3/8" = 33, 7/16" = 54, 1/2" = 78, 5/8" = 154, 3/4" = 257. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.
Torque specifications for metric Grade 8.8 bolts (in foot-pounds) are: 6MM = 6, 8MM = 16, 10MM = 31, 12MM = 54, 14MM = 89, 16MM = 161, 18MM = 222. For Grade 10.9 metric bolts: 6MM = 8, 8MM = 22, 10MM = 40, 12MM = 70, 14MM = 117, 16MM = 230, 18MM = 318. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.
The removal sequence is: (1) four bolts from wheel well edge using 8MM socket (both sides); (2) wheel well trim unclipped and electrical connection unplugged (both sides); (3) one bolt from fascia joint using 10MM socket (both sides); (4) three bolts from bottom of fascia using 10MM socket; (5) fascia removed and electrical connections unplugged; (6) tow hooks removed using 21MM socket for front bolts and 18MM socket for back bolt, then back bolt reinstalled (both sides); (7) three nuts from bumper using 18MM socket or wrench (both sides), bumper removed; (8) on vehicles with secondary radiator, four bolts from lower shutter housing using 10MM socket, shutter housing removed; (9) on vehicles with secondary radiator, three bolts from radiator mounting bracket using 13MM socket, bracket removed (both sides).
The baseplate is held in place and three 1/2" × 1-1/2" bolts with flat washers and nylon lock nuts are started on each side but left loose initially. Support brackets are then attached to the baseplate using one 1/2" × 1-1/2" bolt with flat washer and nylon lock nut on each side. A 1/2" hole is drilled in the frame using the support bracket as a template on each side. One 1/2" bolt with lock washer and whiz nut is installed on each side. One 1/2" × 1-1/2" bolt with flat washer and nylon lock nut is installed into the bottom inside hole on the front of the baseplate on each side but left loose. The cross member is then attached to the baseplates with four 3/8" × 1-1/4" bolts with flat washers and nylon lock washers. The baseplate is ensured to be level and tightened on each side, then the cross member is tightened. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads and tighten to appropriate torque.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX1151 kit includes Class IV safety cables (part 226-0049) and quicklinks (part 229-0512). The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed and are to be used in conjunction with, not as replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. Hold the fascia as close to its original position, mark and trim the fascia around electrical rods, then reinstall the fascia and reconnect all electrical connections and hose.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle.
The BX8848 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. Consult the manual or contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 to determine if it is required for your specific application.
