Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, Blue Ox recommends that baseplates be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill four holes total: two bottom holes and two inner holes in the baseplate through the bumper using a 13/32" drill bit. Additionally, you must drill a hole according to the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit instructions (recommended for this vehicle).
Yes, trimming is required. You must trim the lower portion of the plastic shrouding on both sides of the vehicle for baseplate clearance (step 18). Additionally, you must mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs before reinstalling it (step 24).
Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting.
According to the bolt torque specifications chart, 3/8" Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. The BX1308 uses 3/8"-16 × 1-1/4" Grade 5 hex head bolts (part 201-0368) with 3/8" lock washers. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. You must drill a hole according to the tail light wiring kit instructions. Refer to the kit's documentation for specific wiring details.
Yes, permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended and are included in the kit (2× class III safety cables, part 226-0046). The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame using the provided 3/8" quicklinks. The cables must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. They are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Route the safety cables to a solid piece of the frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. The manual shows recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle, but additional options may interfere; in that case, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. Inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts. It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment before each towing trip.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. DO NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. DO NOT use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do NOT substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to use genuine parts will void the manufacturer's warranty.
The temperature sensor is located on the passenger side under the bumper in the plastic shrouding. During installation, you must remove it from the plastic shrouding (step 11). After baseplate installation, zip-tie the temperature sensor to the washer fluid line as shown in step 20.
The removal sequence is: (1) Remove the T20 Torx screw from the top side of the bumper; (2) Remove the two nuts from the sides (16MM socket for 2011-14 models, 12pt 18MM socket for 2015 models); (3) Remove the 16MM bolt from the backside of the middle bumper bracket on both sides; (4) Remove the two T20 Torx screws from the bottom side of the bumper; (5) Remove the bolts from the backside of the bumper (13MM socket for 2011-14 models, 12pt 18MM socket for 2015 models). Then remove the bumper from the vehicle.
Set the bumper upside down on a table. Holding the baseplate upside down, insert the passenger side first. Then slide the driver side into place on the bumper extension. The baseplate should be positioned as far forward as possible and then securely clamped in place before drilling.
For the bottom two holes, use 3/8"-16 × 1-1/4" hex head bolts (Grade 5, part 201-0368) with 3/8" lock washers (part 203-0010) and 3/8"-16 nut plates with 14" wire (part 61-5208). Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads and tighten to 33 foot-pounds.
For the inner two holes, use 3/8"-16 × 1-1/4" hex head bolts (Grade 5, part 201-0368) with 3/8" lock washers (part 203-0010). On the inside of the bumper, use 3/8" flat washers (part 203-0003) between the bumper and baseplate as spacers, then a 3/8"-16 nut plate (part 61-5208). Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads and tighten to 33 foot-pounds.
Breakaway switch installation is optional. If you choose to install it, attach the breakaway to the bracket with a 1/4"-20 × 3/4" bolt (part 201-0050) and 1/4"-20 nut (part 202-0102). Insert the breakaway switch into the grille opening in line with the center bolt hole on the driver side of the fascia cover. Reinstall the grille and cover. Attach the breakaway bracket with an existing bolt inserted from the top of the fascia cover that was removed in step 1.
Hold the fascia as close to its original position, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs. Then reinstall the fascia, grille and fascia cover. Before reinstalling, ensure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly.

If the baseplate is damaged or missing parts, do not use it. If the baseplate has been in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused, as an accident can cause unseen damage that could result in more damage or serious injury.
The dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. While the baseplate was designed for easy installation, it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances.
