Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BlueOx Tow Bar Base Plate, Front Mount, RV Flat Towing for Select, BMW MINI COOPER (Part #FDRWBX1306) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The BX1306 baseplate is designed specifically for the 2009 BMW Mini Cooper with manual transmission only (No S model). It will not fit automatic transmission or S models. Confirm towability and pre-towing procedures with your vehicle's owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer for specific towing procedures.
Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended for use with the BX1306. The RangeFinderII, Adventurer, and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used due to the design of the removable tabs. The Acclaim tow bar may be used but will not fold and store on the front of the vehicle. Most adapters cannot be used; only the BX8833 and BX88151 adapters are compatible.
The kit includes: baseplate weldment (61-6607), 6 nut plates, 6 hex head bolts (3/8-16 x 1 1/4", Grade 5), 8 lock washers (3/8"), 4 flat washers (3/8"), 2 hex bolts (8MM-1.25 x 50MM, Grade 8.8), 2 self-drilling screws (#12-14 x 1"), 2 round head screws (#10-32 x 1/2"), 2 lock washers (#10), 2 hex nuts (#10-32), 2 four-way connectors, 2 attachment assemblies, 2 backing plates, baseplate safety cable (36", Class III), 4 quicklinks (3/8"), and 2 black cap plugs.
Required tools are: 10MM socket, 13MM socket/wrench, 9/16" socket/wrench, T25 Torx wrench, large vise grip, flat screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, utility knife, drill, 1 1/4" hole saw, and 13/32" drill bit. Loctite RED is also required for all bolts.
Yes. Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge to do "fit work." Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051.
Yes. Drilling is required. You will drill a 1 1/4" hole using a hole saw on both sides of the metal bumper to cut openings for front end nut plates. You will also drill two 13/32" holes on each side using a 13/32" drill bit. The manual notes that dimensional variations between vehicles can be considerable, and minor adjustments such as filing holes slightly may be necessary to compensate for manufacturer tolerances.
Yes. Trimming of the fascia is required. After reconnecting the temperature sensor, you must hold the fascia up to its original location, mark, and trim it just on the outside edges of the receiver tube and convenience links on both sides of the vehicle.
The first step is to remove four push pins on the top edge of the grill (one on each side and two in the middle) using a flat screwdriver. Set the push pins aside for later reinstallation. This allows access to the components that must be removed during installation.
The manual instructs you to forward the front tire and remove push pins from the wheel well cover area, but does not explicitly state whether full wheel removal is required. Contact Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051 for clarification on whether wheels must be removed or if the vehicle can be positioned with tires forward.
You must remove: four push pins from the grill top edge, two push pins from each wheel well cover area (four total), two push pins from each side of the fascia (four total), the grill, two T25 Torx bolts (one from each side by the headlight), one T25 Torx bolt from each side, three push pins from the center, the fascia (after disconnecting side running and fog lights), and the temperature sensor connectors from both sides.
The temperature sensor is located on both sides behind the grill and must be unplugged during installation. After drilling and installing the baseplate components, you must reconnect the temperature sensor before reinstalling the fascia and grill.
The 1 1/4" hole is drilled on both sides of the metal bumper using an existing hole as a starting point. This hole is used to install nut plates for the front end of the baseplate. After installation, the hole is covered with tape and painted black on both sides.
Drill a 1 1/4" hole on both sides of the metal bumper using an existing hole. Use a reciprocating saw to cut off the bolt even with the nut. Then insert a 3/8-16 x 1 1/4" bolt with Loctite RED, a 3/8" lock washer, and tighten to the 3/8" nut plate. Repeat on both sides. Additionally, drill two 13/32" holes on each side and insert 3/8-16 x 1 1/4" bolts with Loctite RED, 3/8" lock washers, and 3/8" nut plates into those holes.
According to the bolt torque specifications chart on page 1, 3/8" Grade 5 bolts should be tightened to 33 foot-pounds. The manual emphasizes that all bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart on the front page of the installation instructions or on page 3 of the baseplate towing general instructions, and Loctite RED must be applied to all bolts before tightening.
According to the bolt torque specifications chart on page 1, 8MM Grade 8.8 bolts should be tightened to 22 foot-pounds. Loctite RED must be applied to all bolts before tightening.
The attachment tab height is 12 inches and the attachment tab width is 22 inches. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051.
Yes. Loctite RED must be applied to all bolts before tightening. The manual emphasizes this in a highlighted warning: "BE SURE TO USE LOCTITE® RED ON ALL BOLTS BEFORE TIGHTENING." This applies to the 3/8-16 bolts, the 8MM-1.25 x 50MM bolts, and the metric bolt replacement.
After cutting, spray the cut edges of the frame with a good quality paint to prevent rusting. This step should be performed after removing the temperature sensor and before drilling the nut plate holes.
Using a 13MM socket, remove the top hex nut from the bumper extension on both sides. Install the backing plate (item #13 in the parts list, part number 102-6816) between the frame end and the hex nut, then reinstall the hex nut.
After installing the nut plates, cover the 1 1/4" hole used to install the nut plates with tape and paint it black. This should be done on both sides of the vehicle.
The permanent baseplate safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The manual shows recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle. If the vehicle has additional options that interfere with mounting the permanent baseplate safety cables, secure the cables to a solid piece of the vehicle frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
Before installing the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. This is critical because the fascia covers the electrical components and connections.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not used again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten them to the recommended specifications.
Yes. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use (if applicable). This helps protect the baseplate and maintain the vehicle's appearance when not actively towing.
Failing to follow and/or altering these installation instructions in either installation or required equipment will void the manufacturer's warranty. Additionally, towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will void the warranty. Use only genuine factory replacement parts; do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts.
If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade. In most cases it will be Grade 5. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. For your safety and the preservation of your baseplate, ensure the replacement bolt is the correct grade and specification.
Yes. It is crucial to register your product online at www.blueox.com so that you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
