Blue Ox base plates are custom designed for each specific towed vehicle. When you purchase a Blue Ox base plate, it includes all the necessary hardware and instructions for a do-it-yourself installation.
Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Yes, drilling is required. You must drill two holes in the frame rails using a 1/2-inch drill bit to accommodate the convenience link bolts (step 9). Additionally, step 13 is optional and involves drilling a 1/4-inch hole to widen the grille opening to accommodate the plug bolts. The manual recommends using a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting.
The manual provides torque charts for Grade 5 and Grade 8 inch bolts, and Grade 8.8 and Grade 10.9 metric bolts. 1. Remove twelve push pins from fascia cover (six per side). 2. Remove four screws from top edge of fascia using 10MM socket (two per side). 3. Remove four screws from underside of fascia using 10MM socket (two in middle, one per side). 4. Remove two screws from wheel well using 7MM socket on both sides, then unsnap fascia. 5. Remove four bolts from top of bumper using 18MM socket (two per side). 6. Remove bolt from bumper reinforcement bar using 15MM socket on both sides, disconnect running lights/electrical connections (gray). 7. Remove three bolts from cover plate using 15MM socket on both sides. 8. Remove two bolts from tow hook using 18MM socket/wrench on both sides.
Place the convenience link against the frame and pin the front hole with a 1/2-inch bolt. Level the link and mark the frame for the rear hole. Do this on the inside passenger and outside driver frame rails. Using a 1/2-inch drill bit, drill out both holes to line up with existing holes on the other side of the frame. Then position the appropriate baseplate into the tow hook pocket and install 1/2-inch-13 x 5-inch bolts from the outside of the frame with the convenience link, 1/2-inch lock washers, and lock nuts on the inside of the frame. Tighten down until the frame squeezes against the baseplate on both sides.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables should be secured to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. Do not mount cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are strongly recommended and should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed.
Install the top outer bolts first, then push in on the bottom of the bumper to line up the inner bottom bolts. Clamp the bumper when the hole is lined up and reinstall the lower bolts. Continue to reinstall the bumper bar bolts and reconnect the electrical connections on the underside of the bumper.
No, the grille plug installation is optional (step 13). If you choose to install it, use a 1/4-inch drill bit to widen the grille opening to accommodate the plug bolts. Install 1/4-inch x 1-1/2-inch bolts with 1/4-inch washers through the grille. On the backside of the grille, install the electrical bracket and 1/4-inch locknuts to secure the plug to the grille.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications and ensure you do not exceed the GVWR.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
